Big brother 🌋 The larger sibling of the little wonky vase from the previous post. I also experimented with carving on this one, this time no holes through the wall but rows made with smaller and larger loop tools. I decided to glaze this, and of course I picked Iron Lustre to showcase the texture. It breaks beautifully in rust-browns over carving, and where it’s flat it shows olive, brown and grey with minute crystals. This vase is also a bit wonky, from a time I was learning to throw narrowed forms on the wheel. It was made from the same amount of clay as the smaller vase. As you can see in the previous post the walls of the smaller vase were really thick, so in this larger vase the clay is much better distributed. I glazed the piece with a wavy edge at the bottom. Oatmeal globs on the body because I wanted to see if it would mask the breakage of the Iron Lustre. Oatmeal has always been breathtaking, as you can see from its dynamic and lustrous qualities. In my experience, it really needs to be applied thickly to achieve this. And, if you look back on one of my recent black clay teacups, you can see how the same glaze combo differs drastically compared to on white clay. On black clay it’s mostly blue, but on white clay you get purple and magenta, turquoise and bronze. I am this close👌🏻 to maniacally putting oatmeal on everything! Did I leave the best for last? Why yes, yes I did. The third piece of my black clay glaze tests is this breathtaking teacup. In the sunlight you can see all the colours of Iron Lustre, in tones of rust and grey and olive, even the individual crystals within the glaze that reflect the light at angles. It’s always surprising to me how dynamic Iron Lustre is in the light. At arm’s length it looks quite flat, especially when it doesn’t have texture to break over. I always try to put it on texture, such as the carving here, when I’m using it as my base glaze. Oatmeal yields this vibrant flowing quality in electrifying shades of blue. It flowed along the carved texture lines, but also between the texture on the surface of the clay. Scroll right for more detail. Oatmeal is gorgeous as a top glaze on any clay body I’ve tried so far, but on black clay it really pops. The rust iron streaks that showed up in previous tests on white clay didn’t on the black clay, which was disappointing for me as I really love that look, but I think this has its own beauty. Suspended in time 🫠 I managed to catch the sun to photograph the glaze details on this piece. The light reveals so much movement and depth, rivers and caverns, blues and ochres, which would otherwise be hidden as more uniform colours as in the previous post. It still astounds me that temperature and time creates this magic, and I can hold it in my hand, suspended in this state permanently. This is a first test on black clay as well, so I’m very excited about these results! Not only did the black clay not have any firing defects, the glaze fit was matched and no crawling or crazing was seen. Glaze variegation displayed beautifully on the body despite them being both of dark colours. Black clay ✨ I threw some yunomi teacups recently to test glazes on. I was really interested to try out some black clay, which I did when I started out with ceramics but I mistakenly bought earthenware instead of stoneware 🤦🏻♀️, leading to major bloating during firing, etc. I’ve grown a lot since and choose my clays after much research! This black clay body is a fine-grogged stoneware and can take up to 1240C. It bisques to grey, then deep black in the glaze fire, which I do at 1200C. I wanted to test glaze breakage as well so I carved patterns into all the teacups with loop tools. I also adjusted my kiln glaze program a bit, since the last glaze firing yielded some pinholes in some of the pieces, leading to touch-up and refiring. I added a hold at the top temperature to give it more time to run, outgas and settle, and extended the drop&hold to be safe. I’m really happy with this clay body; not a single defect! In the last post I was writing about how darker clay bodies can be a bit more finicky to fire, but this one worked a dream. Easy to throw on the wheel as well. It is stated as fine-grogged but I do find chunkier grog pieces in the clay, which is generally not a problem and gives it that “rustic” feel, but I wouldn’t do fine-detail carving on this clay. Glazes are a dream fit as well, I was curious to try some Amaco glaze combos that I had used previously on other clay bodies so I could see how they changed on black clay. The glaze hues seem almost unreal on black, especially the oatmeal! I’ll be posting on that detail soon. Iron Lustre by itself didn’t stand out much. The glazes ran a lot but still didn’t run off the pieces, so if you want this drippy look these settings would be great for you! I’d probably reduce the top hold time for future firings. One for the glaze fans 🤩 Temmoku over Honey Flux is an incredibly surprising combination! Traditional Japanese and Chinese pottery use a lot of Temmoku glaze. The traditional Temmoku comes in a variety of colours, with great variability from the iron migration within the glaze during firing. While that is beautiful, I prefer brighter glazes on my pieces, and the commercial Temmoku glazes I’ve come across are a varied dark brown. However, recently I’ve noticed through my glaze tests that Honey Flux makes an excellent base on dark clay or for dark glaze. If I’m worried a dark glaze won’t stand out on a dark clay body, I try applying it over Honey Flux and it yields a lustrous quality. On white clay, this combination shows clear depth and movement within the glaze, as is visible in this piece. Gorgeous honey browns and light pastel purples. I threw this wide half-bowl on the wheel as a prototype for a dinnerware set my good friend commissioned. She wanted it for soupy pasta, something with a gentle slope but high enough to contain enough broth. She didn’t want a full bowl as it would be too high. I made this from fine-grogged white stoneware (0-0,2mm), which I’ve discovered has just enough tooth to hold structure without being too groggy for fine tableware, and doesn’t cause glaze to break where I don’t want it to. I’m quite picky with my clay bodies so I had to test many before I found one that I was happy with. Personally for an open bowl like that I prefer the bottom of the bowl to not show through, so I’ll have to either smooth it out more or add a glaze to this combination. Yunomi teacup 🍵 Something more traditional and a nod to my Asian heritage. Legend has it, tea was first discovered by Chinese emperor and herbalist Shennong in 2737BC, who liked to drink his water boiled. According to a legend, leaves from the tea plant Camellia sinensis blew into his pot of boiling water, and he noticed an inviting scent from the concoction and decided to drink it. Shennong has been credited with many other things, among them having researched and developed practices in agriculture and traditional Chinese medicine. In the 8th century, tea was imported from China to Japan. Today, tea is enjoyed by cultures everywhere. I love the reduction-fired look, something I took away from my time at the Leach Pottery. With no access to a reduction kiln, I constantly search for glazes that mimic this iron-rich appearance in oxidation firing. Gorgeous rust orange that breaks over texture. This teacup was wheel-thrown of white fine-grogged clay in the shape of a Japanese Han tsutsu-gata, or half-cylinder type. I put my signature seal at the bottom, stamped into a piece of clay. Texture was done with a texture comb. I cut a thicker foot for more comfortable holding, as traditionally they come without a handle. Let me know what you think! The Frog Prince 👑 For some reason, the Frog Prince always occurred to me as a cheeky character, you know, demanding kisses and all that. I insisted on giving him a huge toothy grin. I’ve made the Frog Prince before in one of my first animal mugs, it didn’t turn out so well because his colours turned out quite dull and instead of cheeky he looked kind of creepy… Anyway, I remade him here as a treasure guardian, with a little crown and staff. I threw this little jewellery box on the wheel from white fine-grogged stoneware; lid and box were thrown separately. I did a lot of measuring. At the turning stage I turned them to fit properly, with the lid having a flange that sits within the inner circumference of the box. The Frog Prince was sculpted separately, with underglaze applied at the greenware stage. At this time I was still working with my defective underglazes, so he had some underglaze defects where it bubbled at the glaze firing, most noticeably on the white of his teeth. I also didn’t have a green that could take those temperatures, so I mixed my own from blues and yellows, and this turned out a bit dull and also lost a bit of colour at the glaze firing. The glazing for the box is one of my favourites: #amacobrent 3x Seaweed over 3x Honey Flux. The cream brown you see on the lid is Honey Flux; I applied the Seaweed in a vague lily pad shape but it all melted together. I think it turned out nice regardless, but when I make it again I would do a lily pad in underglazes for him to sit on, and probably try some gold lustre. A ring sits perfectly around his crown and doubles as a ring-holder. Fired to 1200C with drop+hold -50C for 20min. A little blue starburst carved pot! This one is carved with a U-tip (P2), from @diamondcoretools. I have a second one of the same design and glaze using a V-tip (P1) carving tool. On this design I've learned that I prefer the U-tip!
In honour of my larger wavy bowls, I decided to create some mini versions as trinket dishes, thrown off the hump for speed and freedom! I will have 6 of these to choose from at Gladstone on Saturday. (My wedding 💍 is not included!! 😂)
