Chronic illness doesn't care that you love to swim, skate, or hike. It doesn't care that you want to paint walls or be in a rush. I finally got my first tail in 2021, 11 months before my doctors diagnosed me with POTS. The next summer, I was selling it because being bed bound over the fall and winter made me double in size. I've been a fish in hiding since SySy, and I do apologize my fellow merfolk ❤️ It was actually at the convention that I realized I may have a new issue, as for the first time my hands were so sore I almost struggled to get myself out of the pools. I hoped I was just overdoing it, but this past Friday, after 3 big vials of blood and lots of xrays, I've been diagnosed with one form of arthritis, and my doctor is still waiting on the rest of the results to see if rheumatoid arthritis is attacking my hands. I found peace in the water, in mermaiding. The relief the water gives this achy body and the community that I found in this wonderful artform is LIFESAVING. I love you all. And I'm so grateful to swim with you, even from a distance. 🥹 - It is okay to grieve your body before chronic illness! As I start my new exercise regimen to hopefully help my POTS, I grieve the life I had before chronic illness. I was a D1 swimmer who exercised 6 days a week, sometimes 2-3 times a day! The more I push my body right now, the worse my symptoms are. Even through grief, I want to show others that they are not alone & that we can get through this! ⚡️- I FINALLY saw a well known POTS specialist & had an hour consultation with him. He instructed me to start this new exercise regimen & although it’s going to be slow & I am going to want to push myself, I have to trust him. This regimen is strict & I have to stick to it. Starting this week, I am to exercise on a recumbent bike 6 days a week for only 10 minutes (no more, no less). Each week, I am to increase the time by 3 minutes until I am able to tolerate 30-40 minutes for 6 days. Then the regimen starts from scratch as I move on to upright cardio. It’s hard not to feel pathetic only doing 10 minutes. I’ve always had a Type A personality & love to push myself. Was this a good idea energy wise? Who even knows?! Ax has been doing most of the work to convert their oldest #Davenport dress by @fridaypatterncompany into a skirt. We cut off the bodice, hemmed the waistband, took out the drawstring and added elastic. Next will be to unpick the remaining bodice for accessories! Ax would like a bandana so we’ll start there and see if anything is leftover. I knew from the moment I saw this pattern years ago it was going to work for Axie, and it has been the best money I’ve ever spent on a pattern. And I love the Friday Pattern Company in general ♥️ I also love that with sewing you can take an old garment and make it fit your current needs, and use every bit of scrap. What doesn’t become an accessory will become a piece of a quilt, and what’s too small for even that will eventually get stuffed into a cat/dog bed and finally disintegrate and not harm the environment. (Natural fibers ftw!) This is all assuming the half hour of sitting up and using my body doesn’t kick my ass unreasonably so I never want to sew again. And yesterday I bathed. We have a love/hate relationship with the glazing phase. We love it because it eventually makes our pots look great. We hate it because the result is unpredictable, and we’re always anxious until we retrieve our pots from the kiln! We’re also always scared we’re going to mess up our pots after so much work. The glazing came out really nice on this pot, and we really like the final effect of the two colors melting together and creating this texture. What is the part of pottery that scares you the most? I miss working, it's been almost a year! Being unemployed has allowed me the time and energy to focus on my Healthcare and finding the answers so I am grateful for that! These days I could work in office were few and far between. To be able to get out of the house dress nice and do my hair and makeup was something that made me feel alive and well mentally. On the inside though I was in so much pain and the following days after working in the office I suffered even greater. None of my co-workers understood it because I definitely put on a brave face and attended the meetings and office parties trying to be a part of the team but a silent disease was hiding underneath. When I couldn't hide it and sweet co-workers offered me Tylenol or Excedrin I'd giggle inside thinking oh hunny if you knew how much I've already taken. The ADDITION mindset ➕🍒🥩 • This is something I talk to my disordered eating patients about. So often we hear that we need to restrict or remove certain foods from our diet to be healthy, but no one talks about foods we should be ADDING to create a more well balanced intake. We do not want to be ignoring our cravings, instead we should plate them up with three ideas in mind. 1: what can I add to make this snack more filling? 2: what can I add to make this snack more colorful? 3: is this plate going to solve my craving, or will I come back for more? Example - if you want chips for a snack. Put some on a plate. To make it more filling, add a protein food such as a hard boiled egg. To make the plate more colorful, add a fruit or veggie.
