As you may have seen in global news, Kenya has been experiencing well above average rainfall over the past few weeks. The area around RVA received massive amounts of rain last week, leaving the ground saturated and causing damage to roads and houses. We received word this morning of flash floods and a landslide in the outskirts of Maai Mahiu, just down the hill from Rift Valley Academy’s campus. This flooding has caused massive destruction, many injuries, and the loss of lives. Several of our national staff at RVA are affected by the damage, including missing family and complete loss of possessions. Please be in prayer for the many people in our community who have lost family, friends, and all of their possessions. Please also be in prayer for those who are still missing. We continue the month of prayer for our global neighbors today by praying for Kenya! In the Kenya Igembe program in Meru County Kenya, farmers have experienced repeated crop failures as a result of droughts and erratic rainfall. This program is working to improve the food security situation in the Igembe area through a variety of activities including: the formation of savings and lending groups; training farmers on conservation agriculture, poultry rearing, cultivation of dryland crops and other strategies for reducing risk from drought; the promotion of water, sanitation and hygiene practices at the household and community levels; and nutrition and cooking demonstrations. The Kenya West Pokot program seeks to empower 600 vulnerable women, to improve their holistic wellbeing (spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social, economic, and environmental wellbeing) and consequentially improve the wellbeing of their respective families and communities and their resilience to the impacts of climate change. This is done by training and supporting them to engage in sustainable livelihood activities such as tailoring, hairdressing, organic farming, tree planting, beekeeping, self-help group savings and credit management activities. The women are also encouraged to engage in activities that support their spiritual and mental wellbeing. Radical Islamic groups based in Somalia regularly attack Christians in Kenya who live near the border. Late in the evening of 2 January 2022, al-Shabab terrorists from Somalia broke into a house, pulled out a Kenyan father of four named Joseph and questioned him about his religion. When Joseph boldly declared that he was a Christian, they beheaded him. They then threatened his wife, Grace, and set the home ablaze. On 26 September 2023, terrorists returned to the village and destroyed Grace’s rebuilt home. They also killed her neighbour and burned five more homes. It’s so sad because the people want to live happy, with the little that they have they still want to live happy. Pastor Matthew leads a small church in northern Kenya. Every Sunday as he preaches, Muslims from the surrounding neighbourhood pummel the church with rocks. They occasionally throw stones at the home where he, his wife and their four children live. Their family and other Christians in the town are regularly discriminated against, especially at funerals, which are usually communal events. Pastor Matthew recalled attending a funeral where he was served a meal and sat down to eat with a group of men. The other men immediately stood up and left him to dine alone, saying they would never eat with a “pagan.” Despite the ostracism and assaults, Pastor Matthew persists in ministry activities, including helping translate the Bible into local dialects. On this day in 2012, members of the militant Islamic group al-Shabaab attacked a Christian church in Kenya. The attackers threw grenades into the church building, waiting at the doors with machine guns to shoot any survivors. The Christian population in northern Kenya has been targeted before, but this attack was one of the worst. The recent news about the Shakahola Forest Massacre has left my heart broken. As I went for my morning walk today, I couldn't help but reflect on the thin line between religious slavery and cultism. Where do we draw the line? Is it time for us to start talking about Christian extremists and how their false teachings lead an entire flock to such a bizarre incident? As I passed this old church building just next to Victoria Primary, I reflected on an interesting conversation I had had with my uncle about religious slavery and how certain mushrooming churches prey on the poor and hopeless by selling them false hope and prosperity. These churches even go to the extent of preying on persons with mental disabilities, brainwashing them and isolating them to think in a certain way. Life is fragile, and tragic events like the Shakahola Forest Massacre remind us of that. It's a painful reminder of how much we need to cherish every moment we have and never take our loved ones for granted. But it's also an opportunity to reflect on the bigger picture of life and where we stand in it.
