We’re going to work on a fancy word called predation substitute training with this girl, which means finding allowed outlets for prey drive and working on some predation games to manage her high need to want to chase little wild critters. Most dogs would benefit from some of this training. #predationgames #predationsubstitutetraining #biologicalneedsmet #gentlemethods #gentlewaysdogtraining #gentleways #dogtraining #washingtondogtrainer

Has your dog become increasingly inattentive during your walks in recent days or weeks? Welcome to the spring season! 🐇🌷 Spring is in full bloom and with it comes a world of distractions for our canine companions! 🌸 As nature awakens, our dogs are surrounded by new sights, sounds and smells, making it harder for them to focus on us during walks and training... Some of you may think that it's best just to wait it out until your dog is more responsive again. But please don't! Take action before this spring season reinforces habits you don't want, such as excessive scenting, inattention, chasing and other solo activities your dog enjoys but you... not so much. It's important to address these issues now to prevent them from becoming rehearsed behaviours. ☝️ That's why I have a golden routine every year: When spring arrives, I start working with my dogs on concentration and impulse control. Every year. To keep up the good work with my pups. 🥰And this year I would like you to join me! Let me introduce you to "The Focus Challenge - 15 Days to Achieve More Connection, Control & Freedom with Your High (Prey) Drive Dog". Now is the perfect time to start improving your dog's focus and impulse control. 🐕‍🦺 🔥Comment "Focus" and I'll send you a link where you find all the info and registration directly to your inbox. We will all start together on May 5th! Let's make this spring the season of focused, harmonious walks with our beloved pups! 🌷 #FocusChallenge #DogTraining #PredationSubstituteTraining #predationsubstitutetraining #positivedogtraining #forcefreedogtraining #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainingtips #preydriveindogs #highdrivedogs #highpreydrive #gamebaseddogtraining #dogtraininggames #huntingdog #gundog

I talk a lot about #predationsubstitutetraining and how we are working on Banshee’s prey drive, but I rarely mention the management a high prey drive dog requires. I encounter a lot of dog owners who tell me “yes, my dog also used to love chasing things as a puppy” and that isn’t the same thing. Banshee’s prey drive is who she is, it’s in every cell of her body. As soon as we head out of the door, her mind is on the hunt. So what do we do in terms of management as we continue to train? 🍀 Banshee is never off leash unless we’re in a fenced area where I know for sure we won’t encounter other animals. We use long lines (5-15m) for the majority of our walks so she can have space to roam and run without taking off after wildlife. 🍀 I plan our walks carefully and avoid routes where I know we will encounter wildlife up close. Some routes are wonderful opportunities to watch deer from the distance in the afternoon, but they’re roaming too close to the path in the morning. 🍀 We’re mindful of breeding season. It’s currently pheasant breeding season, so we avoid undergrowths and tall grass areas where they have their nests. I can usually tell when birds are nearby from Banshee’s behaviour. 🍀 I observe and learn. Banshee shows very distinct behaviours when she catches a scent, so I know to keep her close and watch the surrounding area carefully. This took a lot of learning on my part. 🍀 I keep an eye on my surroundings at all times. Banshee isn’t great with stationary objects, but she has the eyes of a hawk when something is moving even over great distances. That is a common trait for herding dog breeds. I’m mindful not to bring her too close to wildlife unless I’m sure she can handle it. 🍀 I’m fine with small “failures”. I can train my dog, I can take steps to manage her prey drive, but I can’t control the environment completely. A few days ago a hedgehog crossed the road a few metres ahead of us and Banshee lost her mind, but no one was hurt. Situations like these are a normal part of the process. #samoyed #samojede #samoyedpuppyofinstagram #preydrive #dogmanagement #dogtraining

Negative labels can get in the way of your relationship with your dog! The good news? It doesn't need to be this way. Your dog likes to hunt rather than recall? Give them safe outlets for hunting with @predation_substitute_training and build a great recall! Your dog loves to run? Look at hoopers, agility or canicross. Your dog loves sniffing? Why not try scentwork together? Think about things from your dog's point of view and what your dog needs to do to be happy and fulfilled. This way you can work together rather than having conflict. And turn those negatives into positives! #dogtrainingadviceandtips #puppytrainingtips #adaptivedogtraining #adaptivedogtrainer #positivereinforcement #domorewithyourdogs #predationsubstitutetraining

"mom, there's a squirrel in that tree" I've been slowly but surely learning more about Predation Substitute Training and all I can say is: it's fascinating Charlie and I are learning to work together instead of against each other. Charlie is learning that he is allowed to practice some parts of the Predation sequence but others are off limits. I'm learning to meet his hunting needs in new fun ways while playing. I'm learning to practice more patience when Charlie wants to stop and watch/scent. We still have so much to learn together and I'm really excited to see where this training will take us. Just another step in our training journey towards safe off-leash adventures! Have you heard of Predation Substitute Training? Teaching a high-drive dog to stop pulling on the lead can feel impossible. It's true that original breeds and working breeds, especially those with a high prey-drive, need a special approach to achieve loose lead walking, which is missing from most conventional training protocols. But there is a way to teach any dog to walk on a loose lead without resorting to forceful or aversive measures. By following this holistic training program, it will soon become second nature for your dog to walk nicely close to you. The parts of this training program work together like a puzzle and you’ll achieve best results when followong the step-by-step instructions that tackle the root cause of the issue: predatory over-arousal! ✨Step 1: provide an outlet - learn which activities are a "good" outlet for your dog and which activities might have a negative effect on your high prey-drive dog. ✨ Step 2: play the prep games - effectively lower your dog's predatory arousal so that they are able to focus outside and be approachable for your cues. ✨ Step 3: play the core games - teach your dog how to walk on a loose leash without frustration - frustration translates into more movement in a high (prey) drive dog - so instead we use "errorless learning" methods that unleash your dog's desire to walk close to you. ✨ Step 4: transfer your new skills into the real world - with the help of more games we bridge the gap between training scenarios and real-life scenarios. Walking Together will provide you with all the training games that you need to successfully teach your high prey drive dog to walk on a loose lead. The rest (practise - practise -practise) is up to you 😉 Walking Together will be released on April 5th and it will be on a 50% launch price for 48h. You can already pre-order the ebook and it will be delivered automatically to your kindle on the release date. I love how Simone Mueller’s predation substitute training teaches us to work WITH our dog and their natural behaviors instead of against it. I feel like “hunting” with our dog when they’re on their predation mode allows us to deposit a lot of social currency in them so that when we ask them to do something difficult, they will trust our judgment. Oh and as a trainer and a pet guardian, I have to always remind myself to train FOR the situation and not IN the situation. #forcefree #positivereinforcement #dogtraining #dogbehavior #predation #predationsubstitutetraining #familydogmediation #fdm #searching #stalking #chasing #predationsequence #simonemueller

This is Moss, the easiest animal in the house. Through no fault of his own, Moss is the trigger for some of Elsie’s most challenging behaviors. Although we’ve had Moss for Elsie’s entire life, she views him not as a family member but as a problem to be managed. Some days she views him as prey. We had hoped that adding Milo to the house would give Elsie enough of a distraction to leave the poor guy alone. Instead, this is the one thing that has gotten worse. She does not want Moss near the puppy, and her intensity in chasing him off each time he enters a room has increased. Because we’ve been dealing with these core behaviors for five years, we’ve got some safeguards in place. Moss has access to safe, Elsie free zones in each room. He also has the entire second floor of the house to himself because Elsie doesn’t have access to the upstairs. But it’s tiring and frustrating, and requires a near constant vigilance that sometimes makes it tempting to resent Elsie. Her prey drive is not her fault. Her prey drive isn’t something that can be “fixed” through training. I continue to believe that in time we can and will make some improvements in this area, but it takes incredible patience. Now I can say it… I am specialized in training dogs and their people to use positive reinforcement to stop chasing wildlife! Top tips for working around wildlife 🦌 -use a harness and longline to manage your dog -play predation substitute pattern games without distractions before introducing them -hunt WITH your dog -give appropriate outlets to mimic chasing, dissecting, and consuming(think paper bag filled with treats) These are just hitting the surface and may leave you with more questions like how do I play those pattern games? How does it lower arousal? How can I get my dog to do this off leash? Predation substitute training: Part of this is letting your dog watch their “prey” for as long as they want because that is part of their predation sequence. Here Sadie is watching a pigeon that’s sitting in a tree at the neighbors’s garden. All I do is praise her calmly in a low tone of voice. And for some reason she decided to sit on my feet 😂 When she disengaged without chasing I praised very enthusiastically and reward with a food chase. #predationsubstitutetraining #pst #dogtraining #sadiethegermanshepherd #tinashappyhounds

More often than not we can change a problem into an opportunity to strengthen our relationship with our dog. For instance this week Happy Dog was contacted by someone who’s dog had started chasing wildlife, which is indeed a problem, but through the application of the principals of Predation Substitute Training I demonstrated how we can turn this problem into an opportunity to engage more positively with our dogs, providing outlets that fulfil their predatory needs while putting boundaries in place within which they can practice some natural predatory behaviour. By working together with your dog in such a way we are able to enjoy each others company on walks more - both dog and human become more engaged and attentive to each other, creating more harmony and a better relationship. The dog in the photo is engaged in hunting for cheese that “grows” in and around the trunk of this tree, rather than hunting the deer scent on the ground. Just one of the many and varied predation substitute training games we can employ while walking. This one activity won’t solve the problem, but when employed as part of a whole package, the opportunities are great and solutions plentiful! #turnproblemsintoopportunities #predationsubstitutetraining

#predationsubstitutetraining #predator #comportementalistecanin #renforcementpositif #predation #positiveeducation

One of the biggest mistakes I see in recall training is always using the same reward every time. I like to use a variable reward delivery for my recall so my dogs never know what rewards they will get. I’ve observed my dogs and tested these rewards for effectiveness to achieve a hierarchy of rewards and to ensure they are actually reinforcing for my dog. These are Gwen’s favourite rewards: 1. A flirt pole - Gwen loves to play tug and the flirt pole taps into her natural desire for chasing, catching. 2. Extra tasty fishy treat - this high value reward in a tub or small Tupperware takes Gwen a good minute to lick it all up, prolonging the duration of the reward. 3. Diced pure meat pate - never just hand fed, this is always delivered in a way that makes the reward predatory, tapping into those natural desires - think chasing, catching or sniffing and finding. 4. Rabbit balls - tapping into her natural desires again, these can be quickly hidden under leaves or in long grass for her to search for and find or they can be dropped along the path for a fun game of ‘go back’. So these are what Gwen finds rewarding, Marla’s list of recall rewards will look completely different. What one dog finds reinforcing will not be the same as another dog. One of the most important factors in achieving a good recall is to find out what your dog enjoys and actually finds reinforcing, then using that in an appropriate way that fulfils a genetic need. #recalltraining #recalltrainingrewards #predationsubstitutetraining #makerecallfun #predationsubstitutegames #arnsidedogtrainer #dogtraining #dogwalking #arnside #silverdale #milnthorpe

One from our walk today with Bliss looking like Belle’s bodyguard 🤣😭 Had a really positive walk today though, as many of you may know our nemesis is squirrels! But both dogs were really awesome today. Bliss only reached the end of her long line once and other than that stayed in close, listening well and pottering around. Belle was amazing as usual and had a good time sniffing around 🤩 I’ve been trying to encourage Bliss to watch wildlife rather than going straight for a chase (from some things I’ve read from Simone Mueller @predation_substitute_training 🥳) and it’s going really well. Bliss was able to listen when a squirrel was running around in a tree today, recalled to me and then was able to stand and watch it rather than lunging/barking/chasing, and when she was done she came back for a tuggy and chase of her toy instead! Feeling super positive!🥰💗🧡 🐾 I’m trying to remind myself to make videos for reels again but I’ve really gotten out of the habit since Christmas! Hopefully one of these days I’ll remember to get back into it again 🤣 @walkiemountains long line! Proud mummy moment 😍 There's me thinking how handsome Flynn looks in the light this morning so stopped to take a picture, when he starts tippy tapping his little feet. I looked over to see a hare running across the field 🐇 Instead of making a run for it he watched it!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 This is a dog who used to instantly charge after them and he'd be jumping up like a kangaroo at the end of his longline and really struggle to disengage. We've been working on @predation_substitute_training using the book 'Hunting Together', it definitely seems to be making a difference so it's a great read if you've got a high prey drive dog. We've not worked on it for a couple of months as hadn't seen any hares for a while but after having seen two or three last week we've been able to have a practice with the training again. Flynn will probably always be on a longline around the hares but at least I know everyone's safe that way 🌱 #dogsofbedfordshire #sighthoundsofinstagram #salukigreyhound #salukisofinstagram #saluki #salukicross #greyhoundsofinstagram #greyhound #lurcherappreciationsociety #lurchersofinstagram #longdog #longdoggosclub #adventuredog #predationsubstitutetraining #handsomeboy #houndsome

🐶🐻 Honey Bear training update 🐻🐶 Honey Bear and Michelle have been working hard over the last few weeks since we last met on leash skills! Honey really likes those wild critters, so she’s learning not to pull (foster) mom along for the ride. Mom reported to me that Honey has REALLY taken to her training with some tasty treats so walks have been much better. 💕 With this update I started this amazing duo on some Predation Substitute Training that I’ve learned from @predation_substitute_training. I’m so excited to see how Honey learns to thrive using her natural instincts in a healthy way! 😍 Shoutout to @onedogatatimecolorado for caring so much about their dogs and paying for R+ training to set them up for success. #onedogatatime #rescuedog #shepherdmix #dogtrainer #responsiblerescue #positivereinforcement #colorado #coloradospringsdogs #coloradosprings #predationsubstitutetraining #preydrive

Really loved this short read by @predation_substitute_training. It really got me thinking about predation patterns and how we can use them to achieve desired emotional states in our dogs. For example, you let your dogs off leash to run and wrestle with each other, then it’s time to get moving, but they won’t calm down. Try a treat scatter to bring arousal back down via completing the predatory motor pattern. I’ve actually been doing this instinctively since adding my third rescue. Now I understand why it works so well. There’s some gold in these pages. #predationsubstitutetraining #dogtraining #dogarousal

This is Tiggy, she has a very high prey drive!! 🐿️ Tiggy has only been with her new family 3 months but they connection they have is amazing. Learning more about her and the predatory sequence has helped us to put training into place to ensure Tiggy still enjoys her walks but doesn’t disappear having too much fun on her own. 🐾Paving a path of yeses I have been working with an English Setter, Leika, and as her training has made great progress, her owner would like to give her more time off leash. Leika's owner is understandably quite apprehensive about letting her off the leash as she has previously gone off to chase wildlife. As soon as she strays from the path or stares into the bushes, her owner interrupts her with 'no', 'don't do that', 'leave it', etc. ▶️This keeps her on the path. What these corrections also do, however, is cause Leika a great deal of frustration because she is constantly having to restrain herself. ❓What's the problem with frustration? ❗️In high drive, impulsive dogs, frustration fuels movement! With this undercurrent of frustration comes increased arousal. The more frustrated Leika feels, the more agitated she becomes, which causes her to move faster. This in turn increases her owner's anxiety as she becomes less able to listen and more likely to disappear. To overcome this, we give both Leika and her guardian something to do: 🐾We pave a path of yeses! Instead of correcting Leika when she's about to stray from the path, we reward her for staying on the path, close to her owner. While Leika is on the path, we walk a few steps, mark with a 'yes', throw a treat in the middle of the path and walk on. As soon as Leika has finished eating the treat and catches up with us, we mark again and reward her on the path. Every time we throw a treat, we are resetting Leika to stay on the path, because the next 'yes' and reward are already on their way to her. Not only does this set her up for successful off-leash training, but it also gives her owner more confidence that he is in control of the situation. ▶️The end result of the training is the same: Leika stays on the path. But now with less frustration, which means less arousal, which means calmer, more relaxed movements. And in turn, a less stressed owner! A win-win situation! #predationsubstitutetraining #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #positivedogtraining #highdrivedog #highpreydrive #englishsetter

Does your dog go deaf when he catches a scent? do you see his tail disappear into the woods at the sight of a deer? Are you getting dragged across a path by the barky end of the lead at the sight of a squirrel? Does your dog lack focus when out on walks? Does your recall work inside but not out in a challenging environment? Do you need help? https://haighhounds.com/blogs/ #Stop-the-Chase. #predationsubstitutetraining #calloffthechase
