Behaviour is complex, our dogs are always trying to find ways to communicate with us and it's up to us to do our best to understand what they're trying to say. Some behaviours are fairly easy to figure out, others not so much. Macey @rockstar_dogs_groom_room is one of those dogs that really tests your skills and knowledge. She's loud, she barks at ANYTHING she's easily over aroused, she frustrated, she can't stay put for a second otherwise it's frustrating, with all of the above she barks... She barks at people, at dogs, at birds or if you're just too slow, or if it's taking too long to cross the road. We observed her general behaviour, we took into consideration her breed mixes and identified her behaviour patterns and her unique body language sign. She definitely has the impatience and scanning/searching of a spaniel and the over arousal of a staffy, you can see when she's getting excited by how whippy and erect her tail is, she begins to air sniff and then fixates . Once we figured this out, we did a bit of freework combined with some ideas from Predation substitute training. Never has Macey been this interested or engaged with her human and joining in with her "hunt" whilst helping her keep her arousal levels lowered really made a huge difference. We used a lot of scent work and the environment around us to provide us with interesting places to explore. Were not just using ONE method to work with a dog, were combining a range of different skills and knowledge - - - >>> Predation substitute Freework Scent work Obedience Trick training Neurobiology Endocrinology Breed knowledge Yes... They are all reward based... Barnhunt season is coming up! We worked up to senior last year and are signed up for our first masters runs next month! Never thought that a high prey drive terrier would have issues with barnhunt, but we had a major false alerting issue last year. The answer to the issue was -*GASP* - taking away treats. We first taught barnhunt similarly to nosework- treating at the source. Willow would enthusiastically take the treats as she always does, when she finds the rat. But that made her disenage with the rat, instead of letting her arousal build. Her alerts started being so subtle that it was hard to read. I knew I was doing something wrong. I can clearly still tell by her body language whether she's on live scent or not when we were outside of barnhunt. Then it hit me. I was essentially counter conditioning her to the rat. It just made so much sense since I do actually use counter conditioning with her in real life when I DON'T want her to focus on wildlife. I decided to take away all treats despite being suggested by many to increase the treats and continue to work on it like nosework. I even got a suggestion to get pet rats so I can proof against false alerts. It just didn't make sense to me. Barnhunt was always meant to be an outlet for her prey drive and I know for a fact that she can work rodents. We already do scent, why would I want to make it scent game when this can be a prey game where she can not only smell, but hear and feel the rat. When she found a rat, I would secure the tube by stepping on it and wait. Let her think and do what is natural to her. Then magic happened! Her arousal built and she started digging and vocalizing at the tube. I encouraged her natural displays via verbal praise and rewarding her with moving the tube in a prey like manner. And just like that, she never false alerted on another tube ever again. She always knew how to find the rat. She always knew that finding the rat is great. I didn't need to teach her that. I just needed to let her do her thing. Sometimes you just know your dog best. This just goes to show that your dog chooses whats reinforcing and that the emotional state in which you're rewarding does matter.

Meet Masha ! Masha is a Greek Hare Hound mix who came to us for her first session recently. We saw in Mashas assesment that she had a fairly strong fixation toward dogs & bags of preydrive, aswell as very little engagement on leash. We got to work ! We began by teaching Masha leash pressure and communication to help build a nice, slack leash heel as we interrupt fixation during repitions. From there we focused in engagement building and proofing in alternative responses to triggers so we could instill a little more confidence & indifference towards dogs. We also covered how to advocate for Masha, so she didn't feel like her only option was to stick up for herself if she felt concerned. This is a pattern most reactive dogs fall into as they learn barking, lunging and the like typically = one of two outcomes - either the dog is removed, or they are removed, so it works in their minds ! To finish up we covered breed fulfillment & decompression. Breed fulfillment is really important, if your dog has bags of preydrive putting that to use in a constructive way is going to help your dog be calmer & happier long term - Masha has a lovely, strong preydrive so we provided some healthy outlets for this behaviour that also help build engagement and handler value. We sent masha & her owner off with some homework to continue proofing in the above skill sets, alongside structured decompression so we can set masha up for sucsess day after day ! Skye is prepping for a solo camping trip with both dogs, and they want to share a few of the things they are bringing to ensure a positive, safe experience for all three of them: . Back up clips. These tend to be between 4” and 12” long. They have 2 clips on either side that attach to your dog’s collar and harness. Unexpected things happen, but with a back up clip it’s no big deal if your dog’s collar or harness breaks or comes loose! . Bear bells. Bear bells are an essential tool for me. They warn wildlife of my dogs well in advance and are also helpful to know where your dog is if they’re popping in and out of view. . GPS collar. Any form of tracking is better than none at all! I saved up to get Garmin T5 collars with the Astro 430 handheld for my dogs and I will say, if that is an option for you, this setup has given me peace of mind. . Long lines. I personally use 30-50ft long lines until I can trust the dogs off leash. This allows them to sniff, play, and get full zoomies while staying safe. . Crates. I use Ruffland kennels, but a pop up crate or wire kennel is often just as functional. An xpen can also give your dog a secure space to move around more freely! . First Aid. Consider additional accidents or problems that a dog may find themselves in that we wouldn’t and try to plan accordingly. . Microchip & collar tags. Make sure all of your information is up to date before heading out! Initially I was against using an E-Collar, I thought it was too harsh. Then I watched a @nobadogs episode on YouTube & heard the host talk about a dog who took off after a squirrel (I believe) and came across train tracks. I forget it the dog survived or not (bad memory). That story, combined with Athena's reactivity, I thought layering in E-Collar training was the perfect safety measure I needed. Athena is a tough cookie so she has never been shutdown by an E-Collar stim, we also continioned it properly. What I LOVE most about the E-Collar is it gives ME Confidence. I feel like I deliver recall commands better to Athena when I have the ecollar on because I know I have back-up if she doesn't listen. Even better, Athena rarely needs an E-Collar stim to recall...but it is there just in case. Some dogs will never need an E-Collar or Prong or long-line & that's great. I encounter a lot of dog owners who tell me “yes, my dog also used to love chasing things as a puppy” and that isn’t the same thing. Banshee’s prey drive is who she is, it’s in every cell of her body. As soon as we head out of the door, her mind is on the hunt. So what do we do in terms of management as we continue to train? 🍀 Banshee is never off leash unless we’re in a fenced area where I know for sure we won’t encounter other animals. We use long lines (5-15m) for the majority of our walks so she can have space to roam and run without taking off after wildlife. 🍀 I plan our walks carefully and avoid routes where I know we will encounter wildlife up close. Some routes are wonderful opportunities to watch deer from the distance in the afternoon, but they’re roaming too close to the path in the morning. 🍀 We’re mindful of breeding season. It’s currently pheasant breeding season, so we avoid undergrowths and tall grass areas where they have their nests. I can usually tell when birds are nearby from Banshee’s behaviour. 🍀 I observe and learn. Banshee shows very distinct behaviours when she catches a scent, so I know to keep her close and watch the surrounding area carefully. This took a lot of learning on my part. 🍀 I keep an eye on my surroundings at all times. Banshee isn’t great with stationary objects, but she has the eyes of a hawk when something is moving even over great distances. That is a common trait for herding dog breeds. I’m mindful not to bring her too close to wildlife unless I’m sure she can handle it. 🍀 I’m fine with small “failures”. I can train my dog, I can take steps to manage her prey drive, but I can’t control the environment completely. A few days ago a hedgehog crossed the road a few metres ahead of us and Banshee lost her mind, but no one was hurt. Not an ideal way to end a nice early dog walk.... Why do small cuts always bleed so bloody much!!! All because someone got a bit over excited for his treat.... BUT!!!!!!! in fairness that was my fault too 🤣🤣 Picture the scene.... early morning, quiet woods, Hugo happily jaunting through the woods and then.... BAM!!! A bloody squirrel runs ruight out in front of him and gives chase! 🤣🙈..... Called his name and he stopped... looked at me.... then the squirrel (who is only just above head height on a nearby tree that also bloody stopped) back and me and then came pelting back. I was all excited and doing a dance..... annnnnnd the rest is history 🤣🤣🤣🙈. So not only is he excited and overstimulated by his genetics to chase the squirrel... mummy is also squealing and excited too.... so it blew his brain and he forgot his treat taking manners and came in rather quick..... Kupali’s favourite game (well… one of them)! If you have a herding dog breed I would HIGHLY recommend one of these toys. Great for impulse control and fulfilling their prey drive, especially if you incorporate structure into your play (working the mind as well as the body). With this game, Kupali is to wait until I say “get it” which is his cue to chase and bite the toy. Once the target is acquired, our release word is “drop” and the game starts again! We love to play this game, and even more so with our camera man @matt_geoserpent behind the lens.. it is amazing to look back and see the drive and the power behind this incredible pup! P.S. for those interested, this toy is called a “flirt pole” and the one we are using is the best quality and most sturdy of any that we’ve found on the market… gone are the days of buying a flirt pole only to have this little weapon break it on the first tug!
