Maria Louise Cruz (1946 - 2022) was an American actress and activist for Native American civil rights, best known as Sacheen Littlefeather. In 1973, she represented Marlon Brando at the 45th Academy Awards (aka the Oscars), where -on Brando's behalf- she declined the Best Actor award he won for his performance in The Godfather. Brando boycotted the ceremony as a protest against Hollywood's portrayal of Native Americans. In his place, he asked Littlefeather to appear, and give the winning speech. The audience responsed to this with equal parts booing and applause. John Wayne even attempted to rush the stage to force her off, but six security guards prevented him from doing so. It's said that some people in attendance mockingly used the "tomahawk chop" gesture at her as she was led out. For years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences felt Brando's boycott was inappropriate, and an embarrassment, shelving any clips of the event. Recently, they've had a change of heart - re-releasing the footage, with the volume of the audience lowered, and featuring a tribute to Littlefeather at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. In June 2022, the Academy sent Littlefeather a statement of apology, where the then-president of the organization, David Rubin, wrote: "The abuse you endured because of this statement was unwarranted and unjustified." To make matters even stranger, Littlefeather's biological sisters Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi, say their family doesn't have Native American ancestry, stating their father was of Mexican descent, and had no tribal ties.
