Today, 30 April, marks the 61st anniversary of the Bristol bus boycott, a milestone in the United Kingdom’s civil rights movement. The Bristol Omnibus Company refused to hire Black or Asian bus crews, sparking outrage that led to the minority communities in the southwestern city of Bristol boycotting the bus company for almost four months. The year-long bus boycott in the city of Montgomery, Alabama, in the United States, inspired the Bristol organisers, known as the Commonwealth Coordinated Committee. The committee still runs today as the Bristol West Indian Parents and Friends Association. Caribbean community organisers like Paul Stephenson led the way, encouraging people to find alternative means of transportation, including walking. The Bristol boycott garnered national attention and support only within four months, putting pressure on the Bristol Omnibus Company to hire its first Indian-born Sikh driver, and later two Jamaicans and two Pakistanis. The victory led to the United Kingdom passing the Race Relations Act in 1965, barring racial discrimination in public places. Le mois d'avril est arrivé et avec, vient l'occasion de célébrer des campagnes puissantes qui prennent place en France et nous éclairent sur notre pouvoir d'agir. A cet égard, le collectif Boycott, Désinvestissement et Sanctions (BDS) est un exemple remarquable qui illustre l'efficacité du boycott comme tactique de pression pour soutenir l’autodétermination des Palestinien·nes et lutter contre l’occupation par Israël des territoires occupés. La campagne BDS a été impulsée depuis la Palestine en 2005 et elle est arrivée en France en 2009. Pourquoi le boycott comme arme de résistance ? Un choix direct de la société civile palestinienne, sur le modèle sud-africain, pour changer l'image des insurrections palestiniennes et avec l'ambition d'obtenir une abolition de l'apartheid similaire. Utiliser notre nombre pour peser dans les rapports de force : on retrouve bien là les piliers de l'organisation collective. Et cette puissance de l'action collective, on la retrouve aujourd'hui après ce mois de mars entièrement dédié à l'apartheid israélien (dans le cadre de la International Apartheid Week) et les actions de boycott généralisées notamment en février contre Carrefour (qui a signé des contrats avec des sociétés israéliennes impliquées dans la construction d’infrastructures, ce qui leur a permis l’ouverture de magasins franchisés sur les territoires occupés). A l'heure où le terrible bilan s'élève à plus de 30 000 morts, qu'Israël continue les bombardements en toute impunité et avec la complicité des gouvernements occidentaux, le combat continue.
