People always ask me why I'm so interested in History, especially World War 1 and World War 2 history. Well, it's all done to the 2 men in the photo above. Both of whom I never got to meet. James Hickey. My Mum's maternal Grandfather, was in the Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry in World War 1. He was injured at the battle of Passchendaele and lost his leg. Wilfred Jones. My paternal Grandfather, was in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in World War 2 and landed on Sword Beach on D-Day. Today's SUNDAY FAMILY PICTURE shows my grandmother and her best friend. The picture was probably taken during the Second World War. She must be about 15/16 years old here, if I compare it with other dated photos. I love the hat and her hair. The terrible war has apparently not yet reached the homeland here and people don't know what is still to come. With your research plan in mind, cast a wide net when deciding which records to consult. New records are digitized and made available online every day, but there are still vast amounts of valuable records and resources that are offline as well. Nowadays we have unprecedented access to an incredible number of records and information thanks to preservation and digitization efforts. Take advantage of this and don’t limit your research! As a historical investigator, it’s advantageous to leave no stone left unturned and gather all of the existing evidence available before moving on to the next part of the case you’re building. A family tree with a strong foundation is based on thorough research 🔎 Let’s say your plan is to determine where and when your great-grandfather died, and you find this information listed in a death index. Instead of stopping your search there, follow the lead from the index to the original record where the information for the index was sourced from, in this case, the death certificate. This might reveal even more information, such as the names and birthplaces of his parents, which will propel your research forward and add to your evidence for the family. Maybe you notice a peculiar place of death listed as I did recently, when I learned that a cousin 3x removed died in a state penitentiary at 36, and you go on to research the location further for more information around the circumstances of and events leading up to death by searching newspaper, court and prison records. Allow yourself to be creative and flexible with your research. Searching far and wide can also be applied to researching the siblings of an ancestor or identifying their FAN club (Friends, Acquaintances, Neighbors), seeking out historical context or any other number of genealogical adventures that ultimately tell the story of your ancestor’s life 🙌 And hey, you never know when any of those foraged details just might hold the clue that will lead you to your next great AHA moment 💡 💻 If you’d like more guidance on where to look for records when you’re just getting started, click the YouTube link in my bio for more!

Fern and Faun. Such sweet, old-fashioned names for the twins—the last children born to their parents, George and Sarah Follett Ellsworth. Born in 1905 in old Mesa, Arizona, they were doted on by all in their large, extended family…but perhaps especially by their Aunt Ellye. A twin herself, Ellye was also a professional photographer—probably a rare thing for a young woman to be in those days. But photographer she was—with a studio of her own near her parents’ home, and two of her favorite subjects were her twin nieces. Auntie Ellye took every opportunity to photograph the girls. As they grew out of babyhood, the problem became knowing who was who, as they were practically identical. Faun soon solved that dilemma, however, as she began to throw a fit if she couldn’t be seated in every photo. Fern didn’t seem to care either way, so Faun is usually sitting happily while Fern stands sweetly next to her. I love these photos, as they bring my husband’s grandmother Fern so vividly to life for me and our girls. I met her late in her life, and Roger and I married less than a year before she passed away, so these are precious photos for our family. And who knows? With 6 sets of twins in our combined recent pedigree….maybe it’s time for another set or two? Time will tell. #familysearch #ancestry #lds #twins #telltheirstories #familystories
