Thanks this time to Miss Google, who led us to this utterly charming and irresistible coffee shop while in the area for Shaun’s birthday and taking a drive through the surrounding countryside. It is not often that one comes across someone who has so clearly followed their star. Eben is one of them. When we quizzed him on his clearly vast collection of, well, everything propping up the walls, he said he was a lonely boy, so collected things. Not sure if he was joking with us, but the collection certainly leaps out from every nook and cranny for all to see, starting with the oversized scale, bath and chair on the roof, with a pumpkin on the chimney stack. A must to visit Eben and Antoni’s part-time gig in Darling. Not quite sure what to make of time. Even my youngest friends of yesteryear are turning 50. Shocker! When I saw Shaun last we worked out we have known each other for 21 years. Wondering what rights of passage that is for me? As I skid in that direction I hope that means pushing me around in my wheelchair on the promenade, and changing nappies, not sure in which order. A testament to sticking by each other through thick and thin. We’ve certainly had our moments, but to Shaun’s credit, he has always seen the errors of his ways and returned to the fold. It’s been on the cards for a while. Promised my childhood friend Anton I’d head down (for some reason I always say up) to Stellenbosch from Joburg so we could do a car exchange between the town and the Outeniqua Transport Museum. Anton and René store some of their children there. Here we are heading up to George with the blue Fulvia Zagato, such a rare chicken. They are becoming rarer and more collectable by the day. They grow on you and quickly get under your skin. Promise. We were hoping (or I was) to bring the Maserati Indy from the 60s back with us. Turned out it was too heavy (by about a ton) for the trailer we had hooked up, so René scored and we brought her Alfa GT Junior back to Somerset West. Who has heard of the Piston Ring Club who gather on the third Sunday of every month on home turf in Modderfontein? It is the largest car club of its type in SA, with over 850 members. 200 to 300 cars of all sorts gather in the arena, which makes for a lot of fun viewing and discussions from experts and non-experts alike. You work out what the truth is. There is also a boot sale on the fringes where spares for all manner of old jalopies can be found. A treasure trove for many. You have to know what you are looking for, though. Safer sometimes to stick with the scrummy boerewors rolls on offer. Tariq’s biannual visits from Brighton are usually a flurry of fun with a new cocktail on the menu for every visit. This time round, it was the espresso martini. It took us the whole week, with much practishing, to perfect. I got used to the refrain of “Pop those martini glasses in the fridge” as T hopped in an Uber after work en route back to Koekfontein. Tariq also arrived with three exotic canisters of Lakrids by Bülow chocolate-coated Danish liquorice balls (good for juggling too), which were scrummy deluxe and a great accompaniment to our free-flowing martinis o’clock. It’s been a while since cars featured on my IG. They certainly feature in my daily life… The Rand Club breakfast run popped up again recently and off we headed. The gathering this time started at serial collector Wayne Plit’s in Linksfield where, hidden behind high walls, a treasure trove of cars exists. This is a business of Wayne’s, so other than some beauties being stored for clients, all are for sale. There were around 60 cars on show for us on this occasion. It has been some time since I headed down to the Drakensberg, so in a moment last year I booked a weekend at Cayley Lodge in the central Drakensberg in mid-January. And what a joy to rediscover the majestic area in all its beauty, green hills and mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. I am not the only one who hugely loves old Johannesburg. But it takes a mad Italian, our friend Michele Ciani, to buy one of its old buildings, in this instance the iconic Barbican opposite the Town Hall. With its Corinthian columns and ornamental cornices, it remains one of Joburg's most attractive buildings. Completed in 1931, the 10-floor building is a mix of classicism and art deco styles. Part of Michele's inspiration is to reinvent the penthouse underneath the turrets as an uber-party space. This year, the Cape break was only two and a half weeks. With the superb weather in Jozi generally, just couldn’t tear myself away for too long this time. And what a fab break it was! Previous road trips have been another matter, with Raj, Johan and me clocking up thousands of kilometres cutting and dicing up many corners of our beloved country, with unabashed revelry along the way. Friends Shaun and Chris decided, after much deliberation, they’d had enough of Cape Town traffic and the city's challenges, and have been looking for some time to find calm further afield for them and the dogs, yet within reach of the flesh pots of Kloof Street. The surrounds of Riebeek West in the Swartland was on the cards, as was Yzerfontein, but the gavel fell on Grotto Bay. This is a small and private enclave of circa 250 houses on the beach south of Yzerfontein. Can’t believe I have not introduced Borrie formally before. He is always in all my adventures with Anton and René. Borrie is a standard salt-and-pepper Schnauzer and christened with his titled name of Graffiet Borodin. He can generally be found in the back of René’s Spider, mane blowing in the wind (see the second picture from our Alfa Romeo rally). Borrie has been very skittish since childhood, making him even more alluring. Think we’ve got the psychology sorted now and we all get a chance to smother him with our affection. Dear All, just finishing off the Xmas cake… and am reminded about our fab 2023 Xmas lunch. For the last couple of seasons we have been spoiled by the doyenne of Xmas lunches, Johan’s Mom Martie with, in more recent years, our more than talented Raj coming to the party as well, with an uber-feast at Oubaai near George… So Anton and René invited the gang over to their house on the Kaaimans River mouth this Xmas to show some reciprocity. The only thing is, the only way to get to their home is to be rowed across the river (see my Insta post of 23 January 2022). See the arrival by boat and then up the stairs to a Xmas table in the indigenous woods on the other side of their house. What a feast. René was up early preparing two “potjies” (ask any Saffer what that is), which with the stuffed butternut and many other unusual vegetarian dishes was yummy-scrummy. How fab Martie was such a good sport being bundled onto the boat in her finest and beautiful pearls, as always. Long-term friendships are a big thing for me. I met jeweller friend André Stears more than 20 years ago in Cape Town at a lecture by Shaun Leane as an initiative of the De Beers Shining Light Diamond Awards, which was my project at the time. André subsequently moved to London during my stay there, where we further cemented our friendship and love for jewellery. These are pieces André made for a client using their family crest. I love it. Black diamonds and platinum. Subsequently, Andre, Elrika and baby Stears moved to the country where Andre continues as contract jeweller. Chanel is ubiquitous in my world, so there was no doubt I was going to hot-foot it to the Coco Chanel exhibition at the V&A Museum in Knightsbridge. What a life Coco led. Her story makes for gripping reading. And seeing the clothes she designed from the early 20th century until the time of her death in 1971 is remarkable. The beauty, precision and design are undeniable - they leap out at you. I am more drawn to Chanel’s earlier work - it is more fey and flowing.
