On this day in aviation history, 1988: Explosive decompression! https://www.thisdayinaviation.com/28-april-1988/ On April 28, 1988 Aloha flight 243 leveled off at 24,000 on its short intra island flight over Hawaii when the 737 experienced explosive decompression and the top of the fuselage was torn away. All of the first class section of the 737 was exposed to blue sky. Captain Schornstheimer and his First Officer Tompkins immediately started a descent to the nearest airport which was in Kahalui. With one engine out and sluggish controls the 737 rolled to a stop at Kahalui airport over 10 mins after the emergency started. Despite the situation only one death had occurred. Chief Flight Attendant Clarabelle Ho Lansing was standing in the exact spot conducting her duties when the decompression occurred. Her body was never recovered despite a 3 day Coast Guard search. At the time of the accident, the airframe had accumulated 35,496 hours (TTAF) with 89,680 cycles. The cause of the fuselage failure was fatigue cracking around rivets as a result of the vast number of pressurization/depressurization cycles it had experienced, as well as operation in a salty coastal environment. The Mil Mi-26, known as the ‘Halo,’ is a heavy transport helicopter developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War era holding the title of the world’s largest helicopter. The photos speak for itself as the world’s largest helicopter... it’s carrying a 27,960 KG / 30 TONS retired Tupolev Tu-134 Airliner. The Halo’s power and payload capacity are more than twice that of the U.S Army’s workhorse CH-47 Chinook helicopter putting the helicopter’s performance on par with the Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport plane. Manned by a crew of five that’s able to transport either 82 fully equipped soldiers or 60 wounded individuals on stretchers. This is how you crash a plane for TV… On this day in aviation history 2012: Controlled Impact Demonstration Part 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W—dC5kuQ8Q On April 27, 2012 a retired 727-200 was deliberately crashed into the Mexican desert for SCIENCE! The same demonstration was originally conducted by NASA in 1984 to test if a new type of fuel would not mist as easily and start a fire (it did…it was not supposed to). This second demonstration was to be put on by the Discovery Channel for science (and for fun, I imagine). The Feds at the FAA would have none of it and would not allow the experiment to occur. However the producers for the show got the “OK” from the Mexican feds with the stipulation that the aircraft was manned while over populated areas. 3 people manned the 727 until 3 minutes before impact. At which point a Cessna Skymaster would follow along no farther than 50 meters from the aircraft to maintain remote control. The 727 hit the ground at 140knots and 1500 feet per second with many cameras, measuring equipment and dummies in place. On this day in aviation history, 1962: First flight of Oxcart! https://www.thisdayinaviation.com/26-april-1962/ On April 26, 1962 the predecessor of the SR-71 “Blackbird” made it’s first flight. The A-12 was developed under the Top Secret name “Oxcart” and was designed and built for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The first flight was supposed to be a highspeed taxi and “Article 121” was to never leave the ground. But the test pilot, Louis Schalk, got secret instructions from the President of Lockheed, Kelly Johnson, to go ahead and take it airborne. And it was not pretty. It seems something was connected backwards and Article 121 was oscillating up and down 20 feet above the runway for 2 miles. Eventually the pilot got the plane back on the ground and taxied back to base. The official first flight would come several days later. All flights after April 26 were more successful…or at least had less of a pucker factor. Thirteen A-12s were built for the CIA.
