The latest addition to my @ubbrugby portrait series is also my first attempt at a portrait in acrylic on canvas. 90 Days, the play about Scotland stepping in last minute to save the 1994 Women’s Rugby World Cup. The idea for the play was that of Scottish scrumhalf Sandra Colamartino and Scottish winger Sue Brodie, and is about their teammates’ collective effort to organise and host the World Cup in Edinburgh, lead by Sue, also founder of the WSRU. There was rugby (of course), there was singing (!), there were the very recognisable characters, there was laughter and tears… it was a touching performance, great story and fantastic feeling. I saw it twice… and I’ve had this song in my head for the last 2 weeks. What a privilege to be asked to create an image to represent their story, something that would appear on the cover of the programme as well as a commemorative theatre poster. Playing rugby at Accies with this bunch of lassies taught me a lot, so this felt a fitting way for me to be able to contribute in my own way to their immense undertaking. Congratulations to all of the team who pulled this together. Based on the chat following each of the 3 performances in Edinburgh I would expect you’ll see it hit the road soon.
