He was a South African artist known for his painted and incised wooden panels, striking woodblock prints, public murals, tapestries and sculpture When Skotnes finished secondary school (in 1944) he joined the South African Artillery and fought with them in Egypt and Italy. He then studied drawing in Florence before returning to South Africa (Johannesburg) where he attended the Witwatersrand Technical Art School (1946) and the University of the Witwatersrand (1947-1950). Initially Skotnes was a painter but woodcutts soon became his preferred medium. His early woodcuts were of landscapes, influenced by the work of the German artists Willie Baumeister and Rudolph Sharpf, but he soon developed a style that was uniquely South African. In 1952 Skotnes became cultural recreation officer for the city of Johannesburg. Based at the Polly Street Art Centre he would tutor and influence a generation of black artists from Lucky Sibiya to Ezrom Legae. Skotnes first exhibited at the South African Academy in 1948. He exhibited extensively, both in South Africa and abroad, throughout his life. Notable solo exhibitions include Wittenborn Gallery, New York (1959); Grosvener Gallery, London (1965); ‘Passage Through an Alien Land’, Wolpe Gallery, Cape Town (1981); Retrospective exhibition at the South African National Gallery, Cape Town (1996) and ‘Cecil Skotnes: A Private View’ South African National Gallery, Cape Town (2008). In 2003 Skotnes was awarded the (Gold) Order of Ikhamanga for ‘exceptional achievement in the deracialization of the arts and for outstanding contribution to the development of black artists’. Takuya Yamashita Stack of DM-chan 2 2024 281×412×150mm Oil woodcut on Kent paper, bolt The character named "DM-chan" was original designed by manga artist Onta Niwako, and was inspired by the messenger god Hermes from Greek. "DM-chan" was the personification of the medium of information transmission itself. In the midst of the personal struggles that is my separation with ex-partner, I came across the theme of "melancholia" explored by many printmakers, including Albrecht Dürer. Contrary to popular belief, the melancholic sentiment expressed by these printmakers was not entirely negative, but reflected a thoughtful attitude that explored hope in the midst of anxiety. Inspired by this theme, I decided to use DM-chan as my alter ego to express my own experiences. The title of the new series is "Daily Melancholia" that twist initials of " DM-chan". The character's design evolved from the messenger god Hermes to a melancholic angel created by printmakers of the past. By printmaking "DM-chan" over and over , I aim to express ruminating thoughts and symbolize the hope that shines through the melancholy. Feliz, agotado, pero que buen día, hoy se ha clausurado la muestra de Mokuhanga en la @fundacion_ciec #betanzos, donde se ha podido contemplar durante marzo abril las obras de la colección del profesor @davidalmazantomas y de su discípulo @sanzguillen.fecit junto con piezas contemporáneas de @fabiola_gil_estudio . . La muestra fue inaugurada con una brillante presentación que versaba sobre la técnica del grabado en madera japonés, por el ya citado @sanzguillen.fecit , quien nunca deja de sorprenderme. . Hoy, como digo, hemos puesto el broche de oro con la charla de @davidalmazantomas sobre la estampa japonesa conocida como Ukiyo-e, imágenes del mundo flotante. Ameno, inteligente, didáctico, autor de numerosas publicaciones sobre el tema, quiero destacar también del profesor de la universidad de Zaragoza su generosidad para con la Fundación CIEC y la facilidad de trato .Espero volvamos pronto a coincidir. . It describes the fictional island of Utopia (which means “no place” in Greek) as a veiled but bold criticism of contemporary society. Froben issued this edition in Basel in 1518, with woodcut illustrations by Hans Holbein and his brother Ambrosius. This border was designed by Hans. Erasmus’ New Testament - 1522 Holbein designed this border for Froben in 1521. Made in four sections, it shows the progress of life from youthful Indulgence at the bottom along a steep path through a series of gateways to True Happiness at the top. Along the way, man encounters Virtues and Vices such as Fortune and Avarice.
