Driving home from the sand dunes on the southern Oregon coast, we stopped at Chubby Lil Mermaid Bakery in Seal Rock. I mean, how could we not? The small community of Seal Rock, OR, is located some ten miles south of Newport, OR, by an area of submerged rocks that parallel the shore for about 2.5 miles. The area was called “Seal Illahe” in the Chinook language, meaning “seal place” or “seal home.” The community of Seal Rock was the terminus of the Corvallis and Yaquina Bay Wagon Road, the first road to reach the Oregon Coast from the Willamette Valley, and it was an early resort town. Today, there’s a hotel, an RV resort, and a few restaurants, bakeries and galleries. The post office dates back to 1890. We stopped at the Seal Rock State Wayside to take in the views of the rocks that are home to seals, sea lions, sea birds and other marine life, and we made our way down to the nice sandy beach. The tide was coming in and had already submerged the tide pools, so we just enjoyed a walk on the beach with the doggies, and then went back up to have our picnic lunch overlooking the rocks. The small town of Waldport, OR, is just another five miles further south on the 101 located on the Alsea River and Alsea Bay. The town’s name comes from the German word for forest, “Wald.” There are lots of lodging options, shops, cafés and restaurants, and we used the town as our base to explore the area. Another distinctive concrete bridge with art deco inspired details spans the river. The Alsea Bay Bridge was one of five Conde McCullough’s large span bridges built between 1934 and 1936. However, the original bridge suffered a lot of damage from corrosion, and after years of repairs it was eventually decided to replace it. The new bridge opened in 1991. We were staying on the water right by the bridge and we enjoyed taking walks to different viewpoints on the bridge and the beach. The path leading down to the beach was lined with very tall blackberry bushes and we ran into people picking large bowls of them every time. We loved going for a stroll on the beach with the doggies, checking all the little marine creatures in the sand, and watching the fishermen going out on the water in little boats. The waters there are home to Dungeness crab, clams, salmon, and steelhead. There’s also a free public crabbing dock.
