Habitat. While walking back from my shift at the #oregoncoastaquarium I spied this little guy—a duckweed festooned newt—near the skunk cabbage and pitcher plant habitat. Why is this significant? Because local species are using this managed habitat for breeding purposes. Great job aquarium staff and volunteer horticulturalist for creating the habitat and welcoming travel corridors for this amphibian. Sorry for the picture quality, but my phone and hand were soaking wet.

Our puffins are sporting their finest plumage in preparation for a hot seabird summer! Each spring our seabirds go through a catastrophic molt, trading their fall/winter fit for a fancier look. The difference is most obvious in our tufted puffins, who grow in those brilliant white facial feathers, golden tufts, and brightly colored bill plates. Yesterday I got to visit The Oregon Coast Aquarium and see the Wild Oregon Girl & Friends brick- two years ago I opened a shop selling sweatshirts I designed. All proceeds would benefit marine life on the Oregon Coast. We decided together (through polls) what organization to support and it was almost a unanimous decision @oregoncoastaquarium 🦭🦀🌊🐋 I set the sweatshirt prices as low as possible to keep them accessible and so we made this money 5 dollars at a time! Yay us! I have so many fond memories going to the aquarium- in the 5th grade my class went to go see Keiko who was the orca in Free Willy. Free Willy was my favorite movie as a kid and it was amazing (but also sad) to see him. I always wanted to be a marine biologist (didn’t like 1 out of 3 girls in the 90’s?) 17 years ago my husband worked in the cafe here and I’d come to visit him right before closing- I’d head straight to the spider crabs exhibit, my favorite. Yesterday we got to go behind the scenes for a jellyfish encounter! They have a jelly nursery there- it’s amazing the research and husbandry that happens at this location. First day back at the #oregoncoastaquarium after two weeks of adventures. So nice to see these critters again. Recollecting stories and looking forward to a new group of volunteers to train in a couple of weeks.
On March 26, a loggerhead sea turtle stranded on South Beach near Newport. Cold-stunned by our cool waters, the turtle was lethargic, with a core temperature of 54.8°F. A typical core temperature for a sea turtle is ~75°F. Once cold-stunned, these marine reptiles can’t navigate, and are at the mercy of the waves until they wash ashore. The stranded turtle was reported by Newport local Emily K.; Oregon Coast Aquarium staff responded and transported the animal back to OCAq. The turtle was identified as a sub-adult female, weighing in at just over 53lbs. While her prognosis was guarded, staff remained hopeful as they cared for her around the clock. On April 3, the sea turtle moved on to the next step in her recovery with our Stranding Network partners at @sealifer3, based in Washington state. The SR3 team loaded the loggerhead into their marine animal ambulance and headed north. The SR3 team took x-rays and tested the turtle’s blood to look for any underlying issues; in the meantime, the turtle continues to warm up in their pools. Today after I picked up the boys from their dad I surprised them by taking them to the aquarium. @oregoncoastaquarium both of my sons are on the spectrum- but my oldest has been begging me for some time to take him here! His hyper focus is all things ocean related. I was happy but sad that the aquarium was under construction. So in the future we will definitely be coming back! The otters were totally adorable, and they have leopard sharks! 🦈 I also thought it was so cool about how Albus who is sensitive to textures totally became hands on on the touch pool with the starfish. Loved seeing so many families also out today with kiddos of different disabilities as well. Happy 2nd birthday, Otis! We’re fools for you! Opossums give birth in the spring, and can have up to three litters per year. They’re the only marsupial species in North America, with females carrying their jelly-bean sized joeys in a pouch. A few weeks after they're born, the joeys climb onto mom’s back, where they cling until they’re grown enough to care for themselves. Some joeys don’t hang on for quite long enough, though. Otis was alone when he was found near Otis, Oregon, and at just a few weeks old, he wouldn’t have been able to survive on his own. Fortunately, we had room for Otis in our ambassador animal program, and now he helps us teach visitors about opossums and other backyard wildlife! #aprilfools #foolsforyou #opossums #ambassadoranimal #oregoncoastaquarium

Let me tell you a story. We just went on a family trip, and I was stitching while we drove. The last time I really remember stitching in the car, it was this butterfly, and it was years ago... all the way back when I was a new embroiderer, feeling excited about how good I felt like I was getting. In fact, this butterfly was my first thread painting project. I ended up leaving it unfinished, partly because some of the directions confused me and I had to rip out tiny stitches in the middle of the work and got frustrated. Now I am sure I could just pick up the threads and finish it up, without any directions at all (which I have probably lost, anyhow). . Which is the point of this story. When I was doing the outline stitching for the butterly, in the passenger seat of the car several years ago, I was still holding the needle like I was sewing or using a pencil, and each of the stitches came down just a little bit off from the one before it. That wonky outline taught me to work on my needle hold. . Many many thousands of stitches later, I can whip up an outline for this yellow pansy, also while watching scenery pass by the passenger window. My outline is fine, and I know which parts to spend time getting meticulous and where I can move quickly, throughout the day with my kids at the beach and the aquarium. This little pansy is already coming together. . It's amazing how our craft changes when we keep thinking, keep trying, and keep practicing. Happy stitching, and keep doing the things you love!
