West Seattle 8/12: 12.6 miles, 16 libraries, 3 pantries, 2 plant stands, 1 dog library, 1 magic share (+3 libraries I found a couple days prior while hunting for the West Seattle glass floats) A summer day wandering the junction and Alki? White Center 8/5: 7.6 miles, 5 libraries (I'm so far behind on these. Good lord.) I keep ending up back in White Center. I don't mean to, and then there I am. I'm drawn to it somehow. On this walk, my goal was really to hit the sort of gray areas that are kind of White Center, kind of South Park, kind of unincorporated county land, kind of Burien maybe....filling gaps in the map still. But in the course of that, what did I find? -Dogs! Dogs at a low rider show. Dogs in Westcrest Park. Dogs randomly in the neighborhood while I wandered. I saw a big shaggy dog the size of a large man briefly. -A surprise low rider show, part of a little cultural fair that I didn't know I was walking into initially, but a welcome surprise (see above, re: dogs. Also some cool art at @nepantlaculturalarts afterward, though I didn't take pics) -As always, some street art. Redmond 7/22: 20.2 miles (on a heavily loaded bike), 14 libraries (I'm still catching up here) I'd decided to try hitting a suburb with books and a bike to see how it'd work, and I picked Redmond for having a -reasonable- spread of libraries on the official map. I loaded up my saddlebags and caught a bus out to start. Little did I ponder it being 90 degrees and everything being uphill. Everything. Up. Hill. But, after murdering myself for a while it became a nice little ride through Microsoft and Nintendo territory (I went and did a massive ride from Redmond to Kent to tour Nintendo history later, but without books so it isn't among these posts), through Marymoor park where I saw ospreys nesting, and eventually over to the Sammamish River, where I sat in the shade with some boba and watched the ducks. I had little desire after this to bike uphill with books. But I also have a hard time not finishing things, so I'd be back soon for another half of the town. Green Lake is such a great birding destination! The birds are accustomed to visitors, so if you stop and watch and listen for awhile, you’ll be treated to sights and sounds like we saw on this week’s @birdsconnectsea stroll: whistling American wigeons, a foraging Kingfisher, prodigiously-prowed Northern Shovelers, pink-footed Buffleheads and a house-making Anna’s Hummingbird. This one started and ended around some shows (you'll see the Artesian Rumble Arkestra and @hungrymarchband in the pics, among others), but also wound around to the water and back. This is a 'destination' neighborhood in that no one 'goes through' Madison Park on the way to somewhere else. It is a little enclave tucked away. It used to be the terminus for a ferry system across Lake Washington connecting to Kirkland, but the SR 520 bridge effectively ended that era. Madison St itself is the only stree to go directly from Lake Washington to Elliot Bay and it is just about a straight line the whole way. This walk is in the quiet end of a secluded neighborhood. I woke up today and decided to do something I’d never done: walk from North Seattle to downtown. It was about 8 miles from my apartment to Belltown, where I had plans to meet my stepdaughter and her beau and see “Wonka” at the newly reopened Cinerama (ok, SIFF Downtown, I’m supposed to say). Along the way, I saw Santa (who insisted on a selfie, but I couldn’t get him to smile) and a pro-Palestine march at Green Lake. Wallingford was especially interesting: First I saw my friend John running an errand. A few blocks away, I heard a brunch time commotion at Julia’s restaurant and peeked in just in time to see a stripper-gram to the tune of “If I Could Turn Back Time.” It was mostly downhill from there: coffee to-go from the super folks at the Varsity Inn Restaurant, a short picnic stop at Gas Works Park, a walk across the Fremont Bridge (always exciting! What if the deck starts rising?), and a ramble past lots and lots of boats. After the movie, we saw some pretty holiday lights. A day well spent! #seattleonfoot #seattlewalks

South End, 5/27: 7.3 miles, 2 libraries (+1 pantry in Capitol Hill later) There aren't as many libraries way down in this end of town, but I'm nothing if not thorough (and I could restock some pantries along the way) , so a start and stop at @kubotagarden to enjoy some springtime goodness, and in between... -alas for the old King Donut Teriyaki Laundromat (it's a real place!). The donuts are still good at its new incarnation and I'm glad folks got to finally retire, but I miss what it was too -There's a horse farm? In city limits? -There's a lemonade stand? The new Marion Street Pedestrian Bridge will open before the end of the week, providing an elevated pathway for bikers, strollers, and rollers from First Avenue to the ferry terminal at Colman Dock. ⛴️ The bridge was originally supposed to open on Monday, Nov. 6, but harsh weekend weather delayed construction + pushed the debut back a bit.
