Well, here it is! The special tree-stump tombstone I was looking for in Marion, Indiana during the solar eclipse on April 8. It may not look like anything special from the front where nothing but fern fronds and a calla lily are featured, symbols commonly found on these type of monuments, but the back side holds something special—a heron. • While I’ve seen countless herons on grave markers, this is the only heron I’ve ever seen on a tree-stump monument, and it may actually be the oldest stone I’ve found with a heron displayed. Normally when I find one it’s on a modern marker, and oddly enough, while I was searching the cemetery for this particular stone and struggling to locate it I exclaimed to my husband at one point, “Where is this heron?!” and then rounded the corner only to look right at a heron on a new stone. 😆 I was like, “Yea, I see you, Universe. You always got jokes.” • Research into herons took me all over the place, and regardless of all the research done I still don’t feel confident speaking to what this heron is likely representing for the Peters family. I have only a theory. It’s a rare and interesting symbolic choice for people of their time. I hope you’ll feel free to share any of your thoughts on herons with me in the comments! I can absolutely say, though, that without a shadow of a doubt this is not a Woodmen of the World stone. Mr. Peters died two months and one day before the organization was created. • Samuel S. Peters(1830-1890) was a lifelong Indiana resident who kept a farm. He rests here next to his wife, Cynthia(1837-1931), at Estates of Serenity Cemetery(a.k.a. {{In continuation of my last post: Lulu was the daughter of photographer CF Schroeder.}} After years of poor health, seventeen year old Lulu Schroeder was finally doing better. So much so that she was visiting friends in De Pere for a few days in 1885. She spent what was surely nothing short of a splendid summer evening out boating with friends on Wednesday, August 19th. As they floated along, Lulu collected water lilies. Enamoured with their beauty, she casually remarked: “Girls, when I die I want water lilies scattered over me.” The very next morning, Lulu became violently ill. She succumbed to spinal meningitis by 11 o’clock Thursday night, and died on August 20th, 1885. Lulu’s funeral was conducted from her family’s home in Green Bay on Sunday, and the newspaper said it was one of the largest ever held in the city. The Schroeder house was completely filled and mourners assembled in the surrounding neighborhood streets. Friends and family passed through the house in a long line to view the loved face for the last time. Six ladies and six gentlemen served as her pall-bearers, all bore water lilies. Forty carriages comprised the procession to Woodlawn Cemetery, and a great many more were also on foot- including 150+ members of the local Good Templars Lodge, of which Lulu was an officer. They all had mourning badges and many carried water lilies as well. There was a great profusion of flowers at the graveside. In addition to a Baptist Minister, the Good Templars performed a memorial service, which included a reading of the Resolution of Condolence they had passed in Lulu’s honor. Before her grave was filled, many water lilies- cast by shocked and sorrowful hands- were scattered over Lulu… just as she had hauntingly requested four days earlier. She was laid to rest with her little brother Frederick who died in 1874, and their parents would join them in the family plot about 35 years later. Lulu may have had a different headstone originally, but today the four Schroeders share a modern looking family monument, with matching blocky footstone markers for each. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

Woodmen of the World still exists today, but they no longer have anything to do with tree-stump tombstones(or grave markers for that matter), and tree-stump tombstones are absolutely still being made by carvers today! They just aren’t commonly made anymore. 🤓 • -Some tips on identifying if your tree stump is a Woodmen of the World: If the death date for the individual(s) on the stone predates the organization that was created in 1890 then you know for sure it’s not W.o.W. If it pre-dates 1883 it can’t even be Modern Woodmen of America. And it’s important to remember that tree-stump tombstones for those that passed away after those dates may not be associated with W.o.W. either. The mausoleum was finished in 1909. Wandering through cemeteries often offers accidental history lessons: while I have always enjoyed the Gothic chapel at Brookside Memorial Park, erected in the mid-1930s with stones gathered from the former fire-destroyed Presbyterian Church on Main Street downtown, I stumbled upon Billy D. Wade. A story of hard-fought, gasoline-tinged record breaking and short-lived glory, faulty products and tragedy: sports, industry, and calamity. "In 1963 he drove Cotton Owens' Dodge in 29 of 31 NASCAR races. His results were good enough to win the 1963 Rookie of the Year award of the Grand National Series, also finishing in 16th place in the drivers championship. In 1964, for a four-race swing through New Jersey and New York, Wade posted four victories, three poles and an average starting spot of 1.5. During the four races that he won, Wade led 55 percent of the laps run. It truly was a remarkable streak. No one had ever won four consecutive premier series before and to this day, no one has won their first four consecutively. In 1965, Billy Wade died of internal injuries in a crash during a tire test session for Goodyear at Daytona International Speedway when a right-front tire failure sent his Moore-owned Mercury into the wall. He was said to be earning $200 per day to help in the development of tire inner liners. Some will say they represent life cut short, but they can many times be found for those that lived long lives. These wonderful stones can be found for people of many different professions and organizations. 🤓 • -The timeline for tree-stump tombstones and for that of Woodmen of the World briefly intersected before splitting off and existing separately again. Woodmen of the World still exists today, but they no longer have anything to do with tree-stump tombstones(or grave markers for that matter), and tree-stump tombstones are absolutely still being made by carvers today! They just aren’t commonly made anymore. 🤓 • -Some tips on identifying if your tree stump is a Woodmen of the World: If the death date for the individual(s) on the stone predates the organization that was created in 1890 then you know for sure it’s not W.o.W. If it pre-dates 1883 it can’t even be Modern Woodmen of America. And it’s important to remember that tree-stump tombstones for those that passed away after those dates may not be associated with W.o.W. either. A weeping willow for Ohio native Deloss Brown who died July 18, 1865 aged 33 years, 3 months, and 14 days. He rests at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Michigan. • Weeping willows are heavily associated with grief and mourning. Their natural “weeping” position plays into that, but willow branches were also at one time placed atop coffins, and even used to line graves, as they were thought to help souls pass into the afterlife. The Greek goddess Hecate associated with the underworld also has links to the willow. Eco-friendly caskets used in green burials can even be found made of willow. • The delicate willow is light, flexible, and pliable, and yet strong at the same time. With that they’re also associated with strength and adaptability. Willow is a popular material used for basket weaving, and it’s has been used plenty of times for the baskets that hold passengers on hot air balloons. Protection can also be represented through willows as some cultures think the willow provides protection from evil spirits. Other cultures see it as a symbol of good luck and wisdom. • It’s a beautiful, simple symbol that carries with it a great deal of meaning. A monument in old Thornrose cemetery, Staunton, Virginia, dedicated to Echols and Margaret, the two children of Harriette and Erskine Miller. Once I was walking with my friend and she paid attention at this epitaph. It's not an epitaph, more a message. It says that this man is glad to reunite with the women (a family), who were dear to his heart. And there a number of a row and section, where these women are resting. So we walked and found them. Mother and two daughters. I guess, the lady took care of him, when he was young, and he was friends with her daughters. I will never tire of Showmen’s Rest monuments. They are always delightful and are my favorite kind of communal monuments. I think it’s fascinating that people who lived lives outside the mainstream society still have traditional desires in terms of their final resting places, but it’s a great reminder that death is not only the great equalizer but also the great community.
