A little over a month ago we found goose eggs in random places. Didn't look like anyone was making a nest so I collected them and put them in the incubator on a hunch. Well today and African goslings hatched and another gosling is working on hatching. Sebastopol goose flock update: The breeding season has officially concluded! These are the last two goslings of the season (not available). In 2023, we really cut the flock down to just the very best breeders with a few "backups". My hope was to take the flock a big leap forward in quality. Creating a quality flock has been a HUGE challenge here in NC! Many good breeders are in the upper mid-west and Pacific coast. We have traveled to or shipped in eggs from New Jersey, Michigan, and Kentucky to build our flock over the last several years. The breed is notorious for low fertility and low hatchability (See Metzer hatchery's interesting writeup on the issue. They have even tried AI, although it was unsuccessful). It's been my goal to change this. For the breed to be a practical homestead goose and to have a bright future, they need to be able to reliably replicate themseleves. I've spent the last few years tracking fertility and gosling vigor to make future decisions on breeding individuals. This year, my females averaged 26 eggs per female and fertility ranged from 60-98% depending on the timing of season (very early season and very late season eggs had the lowest fertility rates) putting them a bit above average for the breed. All goslings hatched unassisted and stood on their own- a signal that we may be heading in the right direction. For all those reasons, there were not many goslings to go around in 2024. I retained quite a few goslings to grow out and regrow the flock. Best #earthday gift: 2 new #geezelenskis. #sebastopolgeesebabies. The cool thing about this is that they really are the babies with 3 parents. Both females started nesting side by side, together, in perfect harmony, at the exact same time. And him, being the father of both clusters, never left their side again and fiercely guarded his two gals. While they were sitting, you could hear him from the moon if you as much as approached the pen, and he never once agreed to go to pasture, as they did every day before that. So we doubled on the super greens and protein for all, and let them be in peace. After all, his hissing alone was enough to let you know he wasn’t joking. Funny is that deafening symphony lasted until the exact second that the first baby hatched. Then immediately all 3 went silent. Still fiercely guarding them, but zero sound (told you his hissing alone does the job though). I read that is by design, not to disturb the baby and I think that’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. And now, they’re a perfectly happy family of two moms and a dad. Delightfully unconventional and perfectly in tune with our (at last!) accepting times. Not to mention they are a #heritagebreed on the endangered species lis, and only lay once a year. It is one shot at it and bye, till next year. It’s breeding season and you know what that means!! Lucy my beautiful smooth Sebastopol goose hatched out five sweet goslings on April 1. They are growing fast and it’s so tempting to keep them all! Meanwhile Khaleesi is sitting on her own clutch, I have not been able to candle eggs yet but plan to try soon so I can pull any infertile ones. I’ve had geese for about 6 years now and this whole miraculous process never gets old. Mixed flock 🪿🏠 🐓 Our geese and chickens get along great (for the most part)… the geese are at the top of the pecking order, even above our late rooster, Kelso. However, they share feed, water and a coop. We’ve had runner ducks in the past, but found the ducks created too much mud, and mud and chicken feet do not mix ❌ The sebastopols (sebbies) don’t require a pond (although we give them a small kiddie pool to splash in) - they just need a bucket deep enough to dunk their heads in to clear their nostrils and swallow their food. However, they don’t spend all day in there like the ducks do. I felt like a little girl again when i tested stacking wood logs with cob for a retaining wall. It is starting to look so good and although I wanted the geese to already use the breeding pens, the weather and life just had other plans. Little by little some of the projects are getting done. The little pond in the back is finished, I managed to get another foot deeper in the underground coop, brought 2 buckets of dirt for the goose huts and built the beginning of the little retaining wall. Thanks to preparations we pulled out the Goal Zero generator to keep the incubator running properly. Several recalibrations through the night and things have stabilized. We use 3 different thermometers to check each other for true temperature and humidity. It’s been 7-days and we plan to candle on the 10th day to look for heartbeat and veins. Will post the candling.
