White Peaches 🍂 🌼🍂 These beautiful white fleshed peaches differ from yellow fleshed varieties due to their low acid levels. They are much sweeter and very juicy. When yellow fleshed peaches are higher in acid which competes with their sweetness. They are late fruiting (for us in South Canterbury) and are looked forward to every year. They bruise easy so any fruit thats dropped or has been knocked needs to be eaten sooner rather than later. Have you tried White peaches before? The first garden job I wanted to do past visitor season was a harvest! What a beautiful day. Hot morning and then a divine 3 hour thunder storm with a little rain and then back to sunshine. The most perfect day. This is why I love autumn so much! The visitors seeing this asked where this all was in the garden. At a glance no one would realise this is all between shrubs and flowers and that’s the joy of a permaculture garden. Harvests feel like foraging I must admit there’s often burnt food when I run out to go get herbs whilst cooking. Sometimes I get lost and an hour disappears with distraction 😂 a bit of gardening, watching birds and hand picking bugs. But most of all the peace felt in the space which always charges my energy levels. I’m like the energiser bunny when I get back inside! I’ll post these baskets separately this week to explain what’s been harvested. This mornings progress! ☀️ I headed outside as the sun was rising and the heavy fog was hanging around. I had cleared the beds and paths over the last couple of weeks, but I found after a few days, I'd be clearing weeds and grass again within the garden beds and along the paths! Our base for the ground below the beds had absolutely failed. We originally used black plastic which was now in pieces. I originally removed the black plastic along the paths and as I did, I realised the wood mulch along the paths had decomposed quite alot! Perfect, this is where my plan changed. I shovelled out all the decent soil from the four beds affected by weeds and grass and put it aside, lifted the beds up and moved them out of the garden, I raked back all the mulch and any soil left behind to level out the garden area as much as possible. I laid down an entirely new cardboard base, arranged my beds back to where they originally were, although I adjusted a couple slightly as they were crooked before. I'm now using the decomposed mulch, and the not so good soil to fill the very bottom of my garden beds. I'll then top up all of the beds with fresh soil, compost, worm castings, manure and pea straw. I'm hoping I have just enough chicken wire to wrap around the metal stakes that border the garden area as a temporary fence so the chooks don't dive in once I start planting! I'll finally be planting out more of my Winter vegetables and flowers this afternoon and tomorrow - just in time for the rain we have forecast in the coming week! The garden season is definitely coming along nicely. We have so many herbs planted already and still have an entire tower to go. Our new strawberries have produced a few fruits 🍓 and they were delicious. The early and main crop potatoes have popped up, and some of the garlic has already gotten massive. Again, the Utah tall celery survived the winter and lives on to be enjoyed. I thought I had it all planned out….. I started planning my garden even before last growing season was over. I was so excited for everything I was going to grow this year! On a whim, I decided to “chaos garden” one of my raised beds. Well by doing that I threw my whole plan off course. Am I mad? Nope!! My chaos bed is growing and thriving. The garden is slowly coming together little by little each day! Today I dug up the back of the garden and planted corn. I finally successfully germinated milkweed from seed! 🦋🦋 I put these seeds in the refrigerator in a wet paper towel inside a plastic bag for a month, then placed the bag on top of a warm area in my kitchen for a week. And finally success! I had previously tried germinating milkweed seeds in seed starting soil (after cold stratifying) a few times with nothing ever happening.
