Two very different eras of Rolls. Which do you prefer? The Silver Seraph was the first car produced officially under BMW ownership. The previous relationship with Bentley was one of heaving intermixing and design sharing - essentially they made slightly different versions of eachother’s cars. The eventual split between the two is an interesting story in itself but one to be shared another time. But as we all know, VW bought Bentley and BMW got Rolls-Royce. However initially, they still sold a car developed during the Bentley era which was the Silver Seraph - externally identical to the Arnage. But instead of the 6.75L V8, it used BMW’s V12 and was the first 12 cylinder Rolls in about 60 years! Retailing for about ¥4.5 million RMB ($543,000 USD) in the late 1990s, many of these were purchased by hotels and extremely wealthy business people. To the old generation this is what a Rolls is: a stately, V12 British machine that is smooth and quick and makes a statement when it arrives anywhere. But now as times change and China’s emissions regulations continue to intensify, it has forced RR to develop electric cars. Their first entrance to the space is the Spectre, a big coupé that harkens back to cars like the Corniche except without the convertible roof. The purpose was to create an extremely aerodynamic vehicle, and indeed they succeeded since this is the most aerodynamic car they’ve ever made. Even the famous Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament was redesigned. Rolls was previously adamant in saying they wanted to wait for electric technology to be perfected and now they think it is good enough. But will it be a sales success with a price tag of over ¥5.75 million ($800,000+ USD)? 🇬🇧 The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was produced from 1955 to 1966. It was the core model of the Rolls-Royce range during that period. The Silver Cloud replaced the Silver Dawn and was, in turn, replaced by the Silver Shadow. In 1962, the Silver Cloud III came to market, it was the last Rolls-Royce with separate body-and-chassis construction suitable for custom coach-built bodywork. Rolls-Royce overlapped the production lives of the Silver Cloud III and its Silver Shadow successor by more than a year. While the latter model was undeniably more technologically advanced, it was initially only available as a four-door standard steel saloon and lacked the sheer road presence / grandeur of its forebear. The Cloud III may not have been 'cutting edge' by 1966 standards but it was still a wonderfully refined motorcar. Society in the 1960s however was changing rapidly and, among others, the era of the chauffeur-driven car was coming to an end. Rolls-Royce had to make changes too. One of the more striking designs available was the Mulliner Park Ward Coupe which was aimed at owner-drivers. It owed its beautifully sleek profile to Norwegian-born stylist Vilhelm Koren, who pioneered its 'straight-through' wing line and 'cut-back' wheelarches on the Bentley S2 Continental chassis. Visually updated by the diagonal placement of their quad headlights, which gave it its nickname 'Chinese Eye'. The Koren-designed Cloud IIIs (available in both fixed- and drophead coupe guises) attracted a younger clientele like actors and musicians. 🇬🇧 The Rolls-Royce Corniche is a two-door, front-engine, rear wheel drive luxury car produced as a hardtop coupé (from 1971 to 1980) and as a convertible (from 1971 to 1995 and 2000 to 2002). The Corniche was a development of the Mulliner Park Ward two-door versions of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. These were designated as the 2-door Saloon and Drophead Coupé, introduced in 1965 and 1966 respectively. Production remained in London at Mulliner Park Ward; the new name was applied in March 1971. A Bentley version of the Corniche was also produced. It became known as the Bentley Continental from 1984 to 1995. The Corniche draws its name from the experimental 1939 Corniche prototype. The name originally comes from the French word corniche, a coastal road along the French Riviera. It's a one-of-one adaption of a modern coachbuilt shooting brake, designed by Niels van Roji Design and executed by Carat Duchatelet. The conversion from a conventional Rolls-Royce Wraith took over 2'500 hours to complete. 🇬🇧 The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a full-sized luxury car produced by British automaker Rolls-Royce in various forms from 1965 to 1980. It was the first of the marque to use unitary body and chassis construction. The Silver Shadow was originally intended to be called Rolls-Royce Silver Mist, but was replaced with Silver Shadow at the last minute due to Mist meaning "manure" or "crap" in German. It was designed with several modernisations in response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation, most notably in its unitary construction. Style-wise, the John Polwhele Blatchley design was a major departure from its predecessor, the Silver Cloud. More than 50% of Silver Clouds had been sold on the domestic market where, by the standards of much of Europe and most of North America, roads were narrow and crowded. The new Shadow was 3+1⁄2 inches (8.9 cm) narrower and 7 inches (18 cm) shorter than the Silver Cloud, but nevertheless managed to offer increased passenger and luggage space, thanks to more efficient space utilisation made possible by unitary construction and a full-width, slab-sided body design. Other new features included disc brakes replacing drums, and independent rear suspension instead of the outdated live rear axle design of previous Rolls-Royce models. The Silver Shadow was produced from 1965 to 1976, and the Silver Shadow II from 1977 to 1980. To date, the combined model run of 30,057 units manufactured is the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce model. Back in the late nineties, Bentley and Rolls had to renew their range of cars, the Brooklands / Turbo R and the Silver Spirit being too old, and with a conception from the eighties. But the common V8 6.75L from the old times was too old, not powerful enough, with a catastrophic fuel consumption. So Rolls and Bentley tested several engines from Mercedes, General Motors, and… BMW. These were designated as the 2-door Saloon and Drophead Coupé, introduced in 1965 and 1966 respectively. Production remained in London at Mulliner Park Ward; the new name was applied in March 1971. A Bentley version of the Corniche was also produced. It became known as the Bentley Continental from 1984 to 1995. The Corniche draws its name from the experimental 1939 Corniche prototype. The name originally comes from the French word corniche, a coastal road along the French Riviera. 🇬🇧 The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was produced from April 1955 to March 1966. It was the core model of the Rolls-Royce range during that period. The Silver Cloud replaced the Silver Dawn and was, in turn, replaced by the Silver Shadow. Facing increasing competition from faster rivals and with development of its ageing six-cylinder engine nearing its end, Rolls-Royce turned to V8 power as the 1960s approached. Introduced in the autumn of 1959, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 appeared externally unchanged from their 'Cloud and S-Type predecessors, though the duo's performance was considerably enhanced by the new 6,230cc aluminium-alloy V8 engine. As well as the factory-bodied cars, bespoke creations from coachbuilders James Young and the now merged firm of H J Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd continued to be available on the 'Cloud II chassis for those discerning enthusiasts wealthy enough to afford them. Indeed, as the factory did not offer a convertible or drophead coupé, a coachbuilt car was the only option if one's preference was Rolls-Royce-style fresh air motoring. Available in both Rolls-Royce and Bentley forms, H J Mulliner's two-door drophead coupé was by far the most popular. Hand crafted style such as this attracted a hefty premium though, H J Mulliner's convertible being priced some 30% above the standard Silver Cloud II four-door saloon, which was already one of the world's most expensive cars. — Mineral oil Bentleys! Back in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, Bentley and Rolls-Royce were both owned by one parent company. They used to produce similar cars that competed against each other, as illogical as it may seem. Crazier still is the fact that the two companies developed the Mineral Oil System. Basically, the suspension and the braking systems of their cars used one single fluid. In theory, this seemed like a good idea, however, it was proven to be notoriously unreliable from the get-go. Cars would leak all over the place, leading to massive repair bills, unhappy owners, and rapid depreciation. These days, examples that have been well taken care of don't have all that many problems, but many RRs and Bentleys that were not looked after regularly and extensively can become a nightmare to own overnight. We have had quite a few mineral oil Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, more than 15 to be precise. Some of them, we did include pictures of. Interesting are the stories of the convertibles on our territory: 1. CA2211MH - our first Bentley Azure, which came to the country in 2008. It was confiscated for quite some time. After the owners got it back, they sold it abroad. 2. BH1991AK - this one, a very well-kept example, was imported from Germany in 2019. It's registered in Vidin but barely driven there. It can be seen in Sveti Vlas in the summer months. 3. CB4170HA - imported here as a result of the owner trading in his Alfa Romeo RZ to an Italian collector. That Alfa, in general, is just as unreliable as the Azure, but the Bulgarian RZ was well preserved. The Bentley, to the owner's disappointment, had problems and leaks that eventually got fixed but at a hefty price.
