We’re planning to play “drunk driving” with my family, aka getting tipsy and playing Mario Kart using steering wheels. I’ve never played this way before, but I hear it’s a blast. My first #artvsartist post ever! What a year it has been: -I was making ZERO art in January 2021, you guys. Sometimes I’d make a hand-drawn card for my loved ones, but I never made art just for fun. I had this bad habit of getting way too ambitious with my art, and it was too intimidating to be enjoyable. -I re-watched Avatar: The Last Airbender in March, and it reminded me of all the things that used to inspire my creative spirit back in high school and college. I built up the courage to make a few small doodles, then posted them to Instagram. -In April, I randomly came across a Facebook ad for @stephfizercoleman’s #learnwithsfc community. I dove right in, eager to interact with like-minded artists. Then I learned a shocking truth: the “starving artist” life is a myth! There are so, so many illustrators out there dealing with the same artistic struggles while also making a comfortable living from their art. And that meant I could do it, too. -Over the summer, I started and maintained a daily drawing practice. I regularly finished new pieces and got much more in tune with my creative spirit. I often felt frustrated and discouraged by my own limitations, as well as the limitations of the paints and markers I was working with. -September arrived, and I decided to sign up for Steph’s #illustrationcareerjumpstart course. I also decided to test-drive an iPad and see if it would help me get over my aversion to digital art. Spoiler alert: it did! Big time! I also started a Halloween ghost series… Which has continued into the holiday season and beyond. -I’m now closing out 2021 with a sleek new portfolio website, a surprisingly cohesive body of work, the beginnings of an Etsy shop, several new artist friends IRL, and more illustration career knowledge than I ever thought possible. It feels like I’m stuck in this delicate balancing act, and my negative thoughts are threatening to swallow me whole if I stop fighting them… On the upside, I’m incredibly proud of this painting and I think it marks a major milestone for my art. Smol ghost taking a walk (or perhaps a float?) on a blustery autumn day 🍂 Turns out I love drawing little ghosts, so you’ll be seeing a few more of them even though spoopy season is over! To help capture those cozy autumn vibes, I decided to tackle the #vaulchenpalettechallenge from @vaulchenart. (Really neat challenge idea by the way!)
