I’ve picked up my pencils and pens again and am excited to start a little miniseries of stamps alongside the talented @ddsaldanha. While thinking about a fun project for me to get my feet wet again, we chose to do something that would add to a roadtrip we’re taking in June. I always send myself postcards from the places I visit, so we’ll be creating a decorative stamp for every state we’ll be spending time in while on the trip. The first is, obviously, where we’re starting: Missouri. Guys, I cannot contain my excitement for this little series. Messy May has been something I wanted to do pretty much since forever. Every year May would come and go and I’d be bummed I hadn’t put it into action. Until it didn’t. I decided I was tired of not just going for it. I decided to go from dreaming to doing. I ignored perfection. I told Caro (my right hand woman), and we did it. And like with most creative projects, I’m so glad I did. I moved past the fear (will anyone join? Will I do it justice?), I lowered my expectations (just one person responding to one prompt and it’s worth it), and I led with action before I had it all figured out. It’s the third year of Messy May and the TENTH YEAR of Get Messy. I’m so proud to bring this to you. I’m so proud of the art being made. I’m proud of you. Let’s do this!
Sometimes we birth great things of creativity but they must sit a while and marinate (in our minds or in the ethers) to become what they’re truly meant to be or what shape they’re meant to take up in this world. I always find that’s the case for me and my own work - long forgotten drawings I happen upon a year later that become the inspiration for a collection, or a new way of working altogether. Sometimes I think it’s the ideas that come to me too soon, and I’m not yet prepared with the final vision of what they’re meant to be - that I’m merely given a small first step in the direction and as the project unfolds I see layer upon layer or step after step uncovered for me. Maybe it’s my heart trying to get out of my overthinking mind’s way, pulling me here and there - urging and nudging me in the direction I’m meant to go, while my mind (trying to be the logical part of myself) tells me that whatever next step I’m meant to take makes no sense and should be avoided to make way for a practical plan instead 😂 Whatever the case, whatever the direction, the inclination to step forward (into the new) always persists, making its way into my life - most of the time whether I want to or not. Right now I’m working on a book cover for a dear friend @k.t.bang who is getting her first novel published. I kind of stumbled into it, I offered to give her some advice in the process… but ended up working on the design. And I’ve almost not done any regular graphic design for the last 8 years, so it’s really fun to dip my toe into this field again… I’m looking a bit back on my creative journey right now, and the question for myself is: Did you loose something on your way? When I look back, I can see a lot of different detours, different mediums, different focuses. Things I thought I should work with, that never happened (I dreamed of designing CD cover’s) and the opposite, areas I did not see myself in, like when I ended up working in the fashion industry. I can see it is going in circles, and right now I’m curious on things that I once loved to do, but somehow faded away. Slowed down Art. One aspect of rest that benefits me personally is slowing down my artistic process and not rushing through the creation of my art. I’ve definitely landed on the perfect medium for that concept of slow haven’t I?? Breaking down these rocks into pigment for usable paint is quite a long and labor intensive process. Many of you have been here long enough to see my process from beginning to end and are shocked at how much work I have to do for such a small amount of pigment. So why do I consider this restful? It’s because it requires me to be very present in the stages both leading up to making the art, and during the art’s creations. Being rushed and hurried stresses me out. But with modern conveniences we are often encouraged to tackle tasks in the fastest, most efficient way. Beneficial sometimes for sure. Yet, more and more people are adopting this idea of slowed down living. It’s why we are trying to make sour dough starters when we could easily go purchase a loaf ready made. Why we try our hardest to nurse little seed starter trays when the plant nurseries have the vegetables already grown. And It’s why I will take the time to crush rocks or soil into pigments when the art stores have tubes ready to go. There’s something so satisfying when you buy out the time to do things the slower way. And this feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment leaves me feeling rested and whole. Volles Haus bei meinem Einsteiger-Mal-Workshop im intuitiven Malen am vergangenen Wochenende 🎉 😍. Ich glaube, dass die Teilnehmenden eine gute Idee davon bekommen haben, dass der Fokus beim Intuitiven Malen auf dem Prozess liegt. Es geht nicht darum, ein bestimmtes Ergebnis zu erzielen, auch nicht um eine bestimmte Maltechnik, sondern vielmehr darum, den kreativen Fluss zu erleben, eine Weile mit ihm zu schwimmen und sich immer wieder den kleineren und größeren Wellen anzupassen 🌊 🐬 🌊. Loslassen und das Erleben des gegenwärtigen Augenblicks stehen im Vordergrund. So wird das intuitive Malen zu einem Prozess der persönlichen Entfaltung und des (Wieder-)Entdeckens der eigenen, kreativen Ausdrucksweise. Das kann alles ein bisschen dauern, bis genau dieser individuelle Ausdruck wieder wachgekitzelt wird und so richtig zum Vorschein kommen darf. Denn wer weiß, wie lange er im Dornröschenschlaf war oder ob er jemals so richtig da sein durfte. Yesterday - cycling and having time at diffent places at the beaches from Texel sland - I love drawing tiny beachy moving people doing their beachy things! Who would have thought that last year? Not me yet. I started back then and was of course very helpless and inexperienced at first. But I soon realized that it was worth continuing. And it's just so much fun! On last 3 pictures you can see a pipeline lying on the beach. They actually are going to fill. Up this part of the beach with sand of the see for protecting the Island of losing land. For that process the pipe is needed.
