Snake Safety 🐍 It’s that time of year again when everyone is getting more active, including rattle snakes! We all like going outdoors and enjoying the sunshine, but still be aware of your surroundings. When you can stick to well-traveled paths and avoid walking through tall grass or underbrush where snakes may be hiding. If you do encounter a snake give it plenty of space and don’t try and handle or approach it, especially if you don’t know what kind of snake it is. Never attempt to kill the snake because this puts you in greater danger of being bitten. Threatened snakes are dangerous snakes, so it’s better to leave ample room (10 feet or more) between you and the snake. If you find a snake on your property and don’t feel comfortable removing it, call your local rattlesnake removal company or pest control service. 📸 Randee Herford - on her afternoon walk by our Sacramento office #snake #snakes #snakesafety #safety #workingwithwes #rattlesnake

Today is me feeling bad but getting over it. I dont want to kill anything. Ever. But today we were out playing with wee kind Arthur picking more flower petals and I decided to move an extra up that had fallen over and underneath it was a baby rattle snake. While I am a huge mover and rehomer- this one was right by Arty and right where he plays and I took a spade to it. And I did it again with the second one we found. Snakes literally at our pitch steps are no good. Babies and pets and I’m sorry I killer them but they were wrong time wrong place creatures and we can’t have it. I had the video of @codylundinsurvival laughing his ass off at that Joe dork trying to kill a snake and was very proud of the fact the while he may not have approved of me dispatching them- he would not have laughed at me. Arty had a scare when his mama and Mimi yelled and grabbed him super fast but that’s good too. He has no fear and would not be scared of sneks so I’m here vigilant AF and with my shovel ready. Weedeated a fresh perimeter around the house and removed and thing for them to hide under. We have our Echinacea tincture in an easy find spot and ready to call EmS if anyone is bit. Tis the season my friends- always yellow alert - now orange

With spring warming things up, snakes are moving! 🐍 Of the 46 snake species that call Georgia home, only 6 are venomous. All of them play a large role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem by eating rodents and other "pests." If you see one, it's best to leave it alone. The majority of snake bites or negative interactions come from trying to move them to another location. And remember, it is illegal to kill a non-venomous snake in Georgia. SHARE this with your fellow outdoors loving Central Oregon friends. With more days of consistence sunshine and warmth, we may start to see snakes making their way out of hibernation. Before you go around killing snakes or panic at the sight of one, it is important to understand their differences: rattlesnakes vs gopher snakes. RATTLESNAKE: Give them distance and respect. Western rattlers have a broad, triangular head that is much wider than its neck. They have thin catlike pupils…but you’re are much too close if you can see that. They typically have a thick body that varies in color from dull/matte olive, brown, or grey. It is common for them to have black and white striped at the end of their tail which is capped with rattles. However, do not depend on the rattles to give their identity away. Young rattle snakes do not always have distinguishable rattles. Rattlers are reclusive in nature. They want nothing to do with you. They will not attack, but they will defend themselves. If you hear their distinctive rattle, but do not see the snake, make sure you stand your ground and get a visual of the snake before you move. Rattlers can strike the distance of their body, so once you have a visual, back away at least 6 feet (2x the average length). If you feel they’re threatening your home, your space, your children, etc. it is important to know that it is perfectly legal to kill a rattlesnake. Be VERY careful and handle with care after they’re dead - they can still bite and are still poisonous when dead. GOPHER SNAKES: Leave them alone. Do not kill these snakes. Gopher snakes, or bull snakes, are often mistaken for rattlesnakes because of the patterns, coloring, and similar habitats. However, they are constrictors and not poisonous. Gopher snakes are beneficial in that they help control rodent populations, which in turn tends to keep rattlesnakes away. They have a round head that is similar width to its neck and have round pupils. They typically have a thin body and a pointed tail. When threatened, they hiss loudly. Just leave them alone, but if you handle (I move them out of roads), they do have a powerful and painful bite. Stay safe!

"And I love the park but it’s the season of the snakes And I saw that one and I got too close to it And it’s all my fault, but I just like to play the victim I’ll cry to the ranger until they say '...we tried to warn you'" Warming temperatures mean our cold-blooded reptiles are becoming more active and visible, AKA Snake Season! Congaree National Park is home to 21 different snake species, and our 3 venomous species include the Timber Rattlesnake, Copperhead, and Water Moccasin or Cottonmouth. This is a commonly feared animal by park visitors, but regardless of your feelings towards our Danger Noodles, they should all be treated with respect 🐍 The best way to avoid a snake bite is to leave snakes alone. Most snake bites occur as a result of someone getting too close or touching it. Snakes can strike faster and farther than you may think. We recommend keeping a distance of at least 6 feet from all Nope Ropes to prevent stressing them out and avoid injury. When hiking in snake territory, wear boots and long pants. Stay out of tall grass and stay on marked trails. If you are bitten by a snake in Congaree National Park, call 911 or go to the closest emergency room if you are unsure which species bit you. You may need to hike yourself out of backcountry areas to reach emergency services. Stay calm and don’t touch the area that was bitten. Remove constricting clothing or jewelry if you are bitten in the arm or hand. Stay away from the snake and keep the site of the bite below your heart. We invite everyone to safely view these animals in our park and we have already enjoyed helping visitors identify species in their photos and videos taken from the boardwalk this spring! As the weather warms up and visitors flock to the trails, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential presence of snakes in the park. Snakes love to venture into large open places, such as trails and roads, to warm up their bodies in the hot sun. Some snakes, such as the gopher snake chilling on Bane Canyon Rd, are relatively harmless to humans and are nonvenomous. However, other snakes, such as the Southern Pacific Rattle Snake as seen navigating through the brush, can produce a venomous bite that poses a potentially deadly threat to victims if proper precautions aren’t taken. To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, here are some essential tips for rattlesnake safety: 🥾 Stay on Designated Trails: Stick to marked trails and avoid wandering into tall grass, brush, or rocky areas where snakes may hide. Be vigilant and watch where you’re stepping, especially in areas with dense vegetation or rocky terrain. Rattlesnakes are experts at camouflage, so keep an eye out for their distinctive patterns and listen for their telltale rattle. 🦮 Keep Pets Leashed: While dogs are not allowed on trails, snakes may be in bushes along side paved paths and on roadways. Keep pets close at all times. 🚗 Respect Wildlife: Keep your distance and avoid disturbing or harassing these animals in their natural habitat. Maintain slow speeds when navigating the park and avoid road hazards. 📰 Stay Informed: Stay up-to-date on current park conditions and any reported snake sightings. Park rangers and staff are excellent resources for information and can provide guidance on staying safe during your visit. If bitten by a rattle snake, call 911 immediately. Time matters in snake bites. By following these simple guidelines and staying informed, you can enjoy all that Chino Hills State Park has to offer while minimizing the risks associated with rattlesnake encounters. With a little awareness and respect for nature, your adventure in the park is sure to be a memorable – and safe – one! #castateparks #chinohillsstatepark #ilovechinohills #rattlesnake #snakesafety #trailsafety #hiking #nature #snakes

⚠🐍 Snake Safety - A Field Work Reality Check 🐍⚠ During a recent survey in dense, long grass, our team faced a potentially life-threatening situation - a snake bite. By adhering to our internal safety protocols, and the use of specially designed snake gaiters, a red-bellied black snake could not penetrate the SnakeProtex™ after striking the shin of a team member - the venom dripping down was a stark reminder of its lethalness. Snake Protex Snake Proof Gaiters serve as a crucial barrier against snake bites, providing practical protection in challenging terrains. Investing in the right safety gear is essential, especially when working in environments where wildlife encounters are possible. Workplace safety is always the highest priority for every company. PSA: You're not "less cool" for using precaution and tools that make you and your snake more comfortable during interactions. There is a fairly common mindset that mocks people for using any caution while handling snakes and I personally think that's really juvenile and speaks to their own insecurities. Tools are simply..... tools. There shouldn't be any pride or ego associated with what you choose to use. . Personally, I've been bitten more times than I could hope to count over the years and I rarely flinch at this point, but I still use a hook to make initial contact with almost every snake before picking them up. With certain large species, especially very food motivated or flighty individuals, I find wearing gloves and sleeves keeps them much more manageable when they aren't touching warm, primate skin. Tempest here is a dramatic example, but I do the same for my bulls, pythons, boas, kings, a couple less friendly individuals of various other species. It won't stop teeth, but it makes them more comfortable. . It's easy to be reckless until an accident happens. I had what felt like an insignificant and random bite on my wrist from a Bredl's python 5 years ago. Lots of blood, but honestly did not hurt much and seemed to heal close overnight. However, her teeth hit one of my nerves in my wrist and, 5 years later, I still have a half numb thumb that never fully healed. My hands and their functionality are incredibly important to me and I have seen firsthand how little of an accident can result in permanent damage. . I have also occasionally been thoughtless with reaching into an enclosure and one time I received a very quick defensive bite from one of my larger snakes who was hidden. It was nothing more than an open mouthed slap that I would have missed if I blinked. She startled me and, despite my usual strong nerves, I pulled back. This resulted in one of her teeth breaking in my skin. She healed just fine, but it was an unnecessary injury. . I choose to be "overly" cautious with my snakes for both their well being and my own. Safety, confidence and comfort for people and their animals shouldn't be mocked, just do what works for you and your animals.

Last week our school had a very different type of Incursion 🧐. The Snake Catchers were very informative in sharing the life of a snake and how to be safe if you ever were to find yourself near a snake 🐍‼️ Our students are now feeling more prepared, for such a time, if this were to happen. We were all happy to learn that the majority of times a snake bites, it will be a dry bite. Phew! #SafeEnvironment #SiriusCollege #SnakeSafety

Our community snake education class was a roaring success! 🐍 Thanks to everyone who joined us to learn about the snakes of Northern Colorado, and their importance to the environment and humans. Participants got up close and personal with some of our educational ambassador species, learning about their behaviors and characteristics. We even had a buzzer-style game to make learning fun and engaging! Plus, everyone walked away with valuable knowledge on how to safely intervene when they find injured snakes, and what to do in the rare case of a non-venomous and venomous snake bite. Stay tuned for more educational events coming soon! This class was made possible thanks to grant funding from the @nocofoundation !

Our snake patients are thriving! 🐍 All 7 under our care are doing exceptionally well, including three plains garter snakes. While they await warmer days for their spring release, our team is ensuring they have everything they need to enjoy their herptile hotel stay. Plains garter snakes are native to Colorado and play a vital role in our ecosystem. They help control insect and rodent populations and contribute to the balance of local wildlife communities. However, these reptiles face various human threats, including encounters with outdoor cats, glue traps, and bike/vehicle collisions. To help protect garter snakes and other wildlife, here are some tips for making your property snake-friendly: 1. Avoid using glue traps, which can harm snakes and other small animals. 2. Keep cats leashed or indoors, especially during peak snake activity times. 3. Create habitat features like rock piles, logs, and brush piles to provide shelter and hiding spots for snakes. 4. Drive cautiously, especially in areas where snakes are known to inhabit, to avoid accidental collisions. 5. Educate others about the importance of coexisting with snakes and other wildlife. Together, we can create safer environments for snakes and ensure their continued presence in our ecosystems. Thank you for your support!

🐍 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭! Attention pet owners! We're seeing an increase in snake activity around Nelspruit. Just this week, we treated two cases of snake bites on the same day and we also had several cases of dogs being spat in the eyes by snakes. Please be extra vigilant during this time of the year. In a rare and unfortunate incident, a brave dog named Puip faced his second Boomslang bite since 2022. Boomslang encounters are uncommon, and a second bite is exceptionally rare. Thanks to the quick support from West Acres Vet, who supplied us with the vital Boomslang anti-venom, we're happy to report that Puip is on his way to a full recovery. 🐕💚 Remember, Boomslang anti-venom is scarce. We were incredibly fortunate to have it available so close by. This incident underlines the importance of immediate veterinary care following a snake bite. In the Lowveld, we understand the natural instincts of both pets and wildlife. While we never wish to see harm come to either, the reality is that interactions can occur. If your pet encounters a snake, please bring them to our practice immediately for assessment and treatment. Stay safe, and keep your furry friends safe too! #SnakeSafety #PetCare #NelspruitVets #PuipTheSurvivor #NelspruitPets #Boomslang

How To Prevent Snakes From Coming Near Your House 🐍 Worried about snakes slithering near your home? 🏡 Don't worry, we've got you covered with some simple tips to keep those sneaky serpents at bay! 🚫 Here's how to prevent snakes from coming near your house: Keep your surroundings tidy: Remove any debris, woodpiles, and tall grass where snakes can hide. Seal entry points: Close up any gaps or cracks in your home's foundation, walls, and doors to prevent snakes from entering. Trim vegetation: Keep shrubs, bushes, and trees trimmed to reduce hiding spots for snakes. Secure food sources: Keep bird feeders, pet food, and garbage in secure containers to avoid attracting rodents, which are prey for snakes. Install snake fencing: Consider installing a snake-proof fence around your property to create a barrier between your home and snake habitats. Use snake repellents: Natural options like cedar oil, cinnamon, and clove oil can be effective snake repellents. Additionally, commercial snake repellents containing naphthalene or sulfur can help deter snakes from entering your property. Educate yourself: Learn about the types of snakes in your area and their habits to better understand how to prevent encounters. By following these tips, you can enjoy a snake-free zone around your home and keep your family and pets safe. 🛡️ Remember, prevention is key! #SnakeSafety #HomeProtection #SnakeSafety #HomeProtection #SnakeRepellent #SnakePrevention #SnakeControl #SnakeFreeZone #OutdoorSafety #WildlifeSafety #NaturalRepellents #SnakeAwareness #KeepSnakesAway 🐍🚫

🐍 Summer is here, and so are our slippery friends! Just spotted this little adventurer taking a dip in one of our customers swimming pool. While it's always fascinating to witness wildlife up close, it's a good reminder to be extra vigilant around our backyards during these warmer months. Please take a moment to check your pools, cover them when not in use, and keep the area clear of food scraps that might attract these critters. If you encounter a snake, remember they're just as startled to see us as we are to see them. Keep a safe distance and call a professional if needed. Let's stay safe, enjoy the sun, and make sure our backyards remain happy oases for us – not the snakes! 🌞🏊‍♂️ #SnakeSafety #SummerReminder #PoolSafety #everclearpools #everclearpoolssa

Exciting News Alert! Snake Bite Program Update The Lööf Foundation has generously donated a car to the expert snake handling team from the Ndlondlo Reptile Park ,enhancing their ability to respond swiftly and safely to snake calls! Moreover, this vehicle will play a crucial role in the Anti-Venom project, enabling the park to reach more call-outs and become more deeply involved in this vital initiative. Notably, rescued snakes from residential areas serve as blood donors crucial for producing anti-venom. Since the handover, Neville and Helen from the park have already responded to 4 call-outs, expertly removing and relocating venomous snakes from residential areas, keeping our communities safe! Thanks to the kind sponsorship from CMH Ballito, the park will receive a tank of fuel each month. We’re thrilled to see how this partnership is making a real difference in snake conservation, public safety, and advancing crucial research. Stay tuned for more updates on their incredible work! #LoofFoundation #CMHBallito #NdlondloReptilePark #SnakeSafety #AntiVenomProject #CommunityImpact

It's warming up and that means snakes will soon be more active. 🐍 Did you know Arizona is home to 13 unique rattlesnake species? They're an important part of our desert ecosystem but still, you want to be safe out there. Here's what to do when you encounter one on the trail: 1️⃣ Take a moment to survey the situation when you hear that telltale rattle. A controlled reaction gives you a chance to identify the source of the sound so you can effectively avoid the immediate area. 2️⃣ Give the snake a wide berth, about 6 feet if you can, and then LEAVE IT ALONE. Most bites occur because the snake was provoked by someone trying to handle, move, or kill a snake. Just leave them be. 3️⃣ As you leave the area, calmly let other trail enthusiasts know that you've seen a rattlesnake and where. This will give them a chance to prepare or even avoid the area if they choose to do so. Both the hiker and the rattlesnake will appreciate the gesture! 📸: A western diamondback photographed by @tahquamenon_and_beyond at a safe distance with a telephoto lens.

Story Time: Went into the reptile room a few weeks ago to do the usual morning check in with everyone. Said good morning to everyone … until I got to Hendryx’s enclosure. Tiny gap in the door. Hendryx nowhere in sight. F***. Looks like the door was left open a TINY bit to let some heat out and Hendy has pushed it the rest of the way. I call mum and the both of us are tearing apart the office… then panic because the office is right next to the garage… count him lost forever if he went in there. Just about to really start panicking when I looked up on top of the enclosure set up to the fake plants… there’s Hendy, curled up asleep amongst the foliage. Crisis and heart attack averted! Good boy Hendy. First thing to do that day - pet shop for a lock! 🤣🤣 . .
