Spent a nice afternoon exploring the area around Soledad Mnt in Mojave. I like to go here often just to get some steps in and decompress. I think that the winds only enhanced the shots of Soledad. I read where someone said that they grew up in the area and locals called Soledad Mnt. Silver Queen because of the Silver Queen mine located on the mountain. More shots from the Mojave Desert. This place really makes you realise just how vast the US is. Sometimes several minutes went by before another car passed us. Often it was just the ridiculously long freight trains that were keeping us company. The wind was pretty bad too, whipping up mini dust storms. Penstemon albomarginatus, the white margined beardtongue! It’s been such a treat to survey for this very rare (CRPR 1B.1) desert penstemon! This species is only known from a few very disjunct populations in California, Nevada and Arizona and their population sizes are often very small. Many of the occurrences that I was surveying consist of between 1 and 5 plants, and often is just a single individual. This obviously makes this species vulnerable to local extinctions. It has a pretty specific habitat of deep sand in stabilized sand dunes and sand sheets. It is well adapted to life in the sand, and in good rain years like this one, can send up copious inflorescences! I had one plant that had over 150 inflorescences!! I can’t think of any other Penstemon that is as floriferous! Despite its ability to send up tons of beautiful flower displays and had pleasant flowery smell, it doesn’t seem to be much of a pollinator magnet, as I only saw 2 bees on the flowers the whole time. This, coupled with the distance between plants may account for its lack of high viable seed production, as we didn’t encounter a single seedling. It did still seem to have some pretty good phenotypic variation though! The flowers on a few plants were a very deep hot pink, while most others were a much paler, but beautiful coloration. Flower size seemed to vary a bit too. Being a good year, any plant that can be up seems to be, and I was able to locate a bunch of new individuals and even a couple new occurrences! So there is still hope that the population sizes are bigger than they seem, just that the plants are spread out over a huge area. The Wandering Mojave Weed Workshop has concluded! Turnout was not as high as interest, but that's just fine. Even though only two people arrived for the onsite, the process generated $50 in donations to @nalcorg , $75 to the @mojavedesertlandtrust , and $25 for the @oceanconservancy . On top of the $150 in donations to 501c3's, I received $50, which is fair trade for the research I did on invasives. Just returned from a week long trip with Steve (@smh_images) through some backcountry areas in California where the wildflowers are blooming all over. When we got to this area, the flowers were just past their peak and starting to dry up. Although still absolutely beautiful, with their less than prime condition, I decided to focus on the rock formations that towered over them and have the flowers softly out of focus. To my surprise, I rather liked this approach. It gives the foreground a rather whimsical feel. The camp setup in the mid-ground adds scale to the towering pinnacles above. Adding visual interest to the scene, the nearly full moon came into view just before sunset. This is my favorite time to shoot the moon, because the sky is still bright and the exposure to capture the moon matches the surrounding sky and scenery.
