🇺🇸 Few days ago, in Australia, around 160 pilot whalea stranded. Many organizations included the team of Perth Zoo were on site. More than 100 cetaceans were released successfully. On April 26th, a baby pilot whale was discovered in compromised condition and was likely a orphan of the stranding event. Sadly the vet had to euthanize the baby. In this tragic event 28 pilot whales died plus this baby. 🇫🇷 Il y a quelques jours, en Australie, environ 160 globicéphales se sont échouées. Remus is 5 years old today! Remus is one of our cheetah companion dogs. Most cheetahs that come be to a part of the Cat Ambassador Program are single cubs. Often these cubs come from a cheetah mother who did not have the most successful litter. Cheetahs can have upwards of six cubs in a litter at a time and they will stay with their mothers for up to nearly two years. When a cheetah mom has only one or two cubs survive in her litter, often she will abandon those cubs and even stop producing milk for them. This allows her to be able to breed again and have better luck next time in having a larger litter to survive. This happens to cheetahs in their natural range, but it also happens to cheetahs in zoos. The main reason we pair cheetah ambassadors with a dog is for companionship. Today is World Veterinary Day! And I want to thank the entire veterinary staff at the North Carolina Zoo for all of their hard work and dedication to health and well-being of the animals in our care. I also wanted to call attention to this year’s theme for World Veterinary Day. The World Veterinary Association announced this years theme as “Veterinarians are essential health workers”, highlighting that the health of people are very closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. One Health is a collaborative transdisciplinary approach to fight health issues at the human-animal interface. It is a simple and powerful concept with a complex implementation process. Some of the barriers hampering implementation in countries include fragmented and disconnected governance of health, animal health and environment, and a lack of clarity about the definition, concept and scope of One Health approach. There is also an under-recognition of its economic benefits, absence of an agreement between health, veterinary and environment professionals on way forward and inadequate training activities. A paradigm shift in national policy is urgently required to desectoralize human, animal and ecosystem health and to take a more integrated approach towards human and animal health. Enrichment creates opportunities for our animals and the animals in our care to learn, keep mentally and physically stimulated, and gives them more of a sense of control in their environment. Enrichment helps prevent behavior issues as well because it gives the animal other things to do and areas to focus their attention. Studies also show that if one is using positive reinforcement training, it is the animal’s preferred form of enrichment. It is for this reason why I train. Six months ago, I was part of a venomous snake confiscation. One of the snakes my facility took in was a western diamondback rattlesnake, now named Princess Buttercup. While the snakes were reasonably well cared for, that was the only thing in that house that was. I heard a dog whimpering in a crate somewhere, and there were firearms laying around the room, including a rifle on the stand where the snakes were being kept, pointed directly at me. While we did have animal control with us, the officer was unarmed and pretty tiny. So it was just the three of us, all under 5’4”. Buttercup’s former owner decided to prove how friendly these snakes were by bare-handed picking them up. She was rattling the entire time and looked very tense. I didn’t argue since again, very obvious firearms laying around and these were his last, and favorite, pet snakes. Anyway, six months later, Princess Buttercup finally shed her old skin and now is crisp and clean! She is a wonderful snake, although so socialized that she approaches me when I’m doing enclosure maintenance. Tommy and I had super fun encounter on Thursday, a circus gala and we were hired as entertainment with animals, specifically snake! I love interacting with people with snakes, especially the amazing, trained snakes I work with. I mean…was she confused I was gonna take a photo of her so she strike a pose? Or she didn’t hear clearly what keeper said because there were bamboo buckets moving around in the background noise? Or, she thought she didn’t understand Mandarin which in fact she does! DYK: We call our pandas’ name in Mandarin and give verbal cues in Cantonese and English during husbandry trainings!
