🌿🐆 International Leopard Day! 🐆🌿 Today, we celebrate the majestic beauty and importance of leopards in our world. But as we honor these incredible creatures, let's also remember the vital need to coexist peacefully with them. Across the globe, human-wildlife conflict poses a threat to leopard populations. As their habitats shrink, encounters with humans become more frequent, leading to conflicts that harm both people and leopards. But there's hope! By raising awareness and promoting conservation efforts, we can mitigate these conflicts and create harmonious relationships between humans and leopards. Let's work together to protect these magnificent animals and their habitats. Through education, empathy, and sustainable practices, we can ensure a brighter future for both leopards and communities worldwide. 🌍💚 #internationalleopardday #mananimalconflict #leopardsighting #leopards #conservationefforts #wildlifeprotection #leopardconservation #protectourleopards #leopardlove #animalprotection #humanwildlifeconflict #humanwildlifecoexistence #wildlifeeducation #biodiversity

Henry and Poppy got up close and had a good look at the centipede that our group leader Adi found. Adi is very brave as centipedes do indeed bite! They have clawed, pointy legs located on their first body segment, which they use to puncture the skin. While they’re not aggressive towards humans, they may bite if provoked or handled roughly. The larger the centipede, the more painful their bite may be. Fortunately, centipede bites rarely cause serious health complications in humans and aren’t typically dangerous or fatal. However, some species have venom that can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. So, while centipedes may not be cuddly creatures, they’re an essential part of our ecosystem! 🌿🐛 #LittleMuddyBoots #CentipedeDiscovery #NatureExplorers #OutdoorLearning #CreepyCrawlies #BugHunt #WildlifeEducation #NatureForKids #OutdoorAdventures #CentipedeLove #GardenExploration #NaturePlay #KidsActivities #ExploreNature #ChildhoodUnplugged #windsorparents #windsor

If you go for a hunt under a log in your garden, you are more than likely to come across a millipede like the one we found in class! Despite their name, millipedes don't have a thousand legs. Most species have between 30 and 400 legs, though some have even more! Millipedes move slowly, unlike their fast-moving cousins, the centipedes. They crawl along the ground using their many legs in a wave-like motion. Millipedes play an important role in ecosystems by breaking down dead plant material and recycling nutrients. They help to decompose leaves and other organic matter, contributing to soil health. When threatened, millipedes curl into a tight spiral and release a foul-smelling fluid from glands along their body. This fluid contains chemicals that deter predators, such as birds and mammals. Millipedes are most active at night, venturing out to feed on decaying plant matter and explore their surroundings under the cover of darkness. Millipedes are found in a wide range of habitats, including forests, grasslands, deserts, and even caves. They prefer moist environments and can often be found hiding under logs, rocks, and leaf litter. Millipedes are among the oldest land-dwelling arthropods, with fossil evidence dating back over 400 million years. They have remained relatively unchanged in appearance over time. Millipedes lay eggs in moist soil or decaying vegetation. The eggs hatch into tiny nymphs that resemble adults but have fewer segments and legs. As they grow, they moult their exoskeletons and develop more segments and legs. Millipedes are primarily herbivores, feeding on decaying plant material, fallen leaves, and rotting wood. They use their specialized mouthparts to chew through tough plant fibres. In some cultures, millipedes are considered symbols of good luck or fertility. They are also featured in folklore and mythology as mysterious and sometimes magical creatures. #LittleMuddyBoots #BCACollege #Maidenhead #NatureExplorers #OutdoorLearning #Millipedes #CreepyCrawlies #BugHunt #WildlifeEducation #NatureForKids #OutdoorAdventures #GardenExploration

Hold your noses, folks—it's time to talk about koala scat! Koalas can be difficult to identify in trees, however researchers can find out more about them by collecting their scat (poo). Koala scat is small, it is the size and shape of olive pips and is dark brown. Koalas excrete 100-200 scats per day 🤯, but these are often difficult to see, especially if there is a lot of leaf litter. Some scientists use scat detection dogs because they have great noses and can pick up scents 150% more accurately and 20 times faster than humans can. What a great non-invasive way to study koalas! Thought provoking and attitudes can change. Our national icon is a red kangaroo featured on the right. Yet we harvest and treat the species poorly. Often labelled Vermin or a pest in their own endemic country. Seeing pet related products for sale and the use of kangaroo products is a common thing. Having raised a range of macropods and being a genuine nature lover we find it hard to go along with such practices. Whether it be an ethical or philosophy change? Suns out guns out 💪🏻 Phoenix during our 11:30 flying demonstration today decided it was a perfect time to sun herself ☀️ Vultures can often be seen perching in the morning sun doing the horaltic pose (stretched-wing position). Vultures are excellent at conserving their energy, and can even turn down their body temperatures at night! It is believed they’ll do this horaltic pose in the morning sun to warm their bodies back up and it helps to bake off any bacteria lingering on their feathers. 🪶 - Morgan #cowichanvalley #sustainability #getcloser #bird #flyingisfreedom #vancouverisland #birdwatching #birdsofprey #explorebc #vancouverislandbc #vancouverislandguide #wildlifeconservation #raptorsofinstagram #birdphotography #tourismcowichan #tourismvictoria #explorecowichan #conservation #explorebcnow #raptors #bcbirdtrail #birder #islandraptors #wildlifeeducation

Did you know ducklings are small enough to fall down rainfall catch basins? When their mom is leading them from their nesting location to the desired body of water they often waddle through neighborhoods. This can lead to them walking on the road and, unfortunately, falling down into catch basins, also known as storm drains. When they fall down, they need to be rescued very quickly otherwise they wander down the pipes and get lost. In addition to this concern, there is also sometimes toxic fumes and water contaminants that are present down there that can quickly kill them. Since ducks are very good mothers, the mother and other ducklings tend to stick around the area, the mother frantic to be reunited with it's missing duckling. If this is something that you witness this spring, call WILDNorth's Wildlife Helpline immediately so that we can mobilize our WILDRescue team to save the duckling. We also work closely with EPCOR and train them on proper wildlife rescue protocol so that they are able to respond in these rescue scenarios as well. 📸African Lion: Dakari Happy birthday to this regal gentleman. Thanks for inspiring so many guests to get involved in conservation by being handsome and sassy. 🧡 🦁In Africa on the savannas, a pride of lions can control up to 100 square miles. They used to be present all across Africa, even above the Sahara, but their current range is only a fraction of what it used to be and they are now located only in sub-Saharan Africa. 🦁Thousands of years ago, lions were present in ancient Egypt. They are a HUGE fixture in ancient Egyptian mythology with several gods and goddesses being depicted as lions or as humanoid lions or lion-animal hybrids. Sekhmet, a female goddess of war, was often depicted with the head of a lion, as was Tefnut the goddess of water. Maahes, another god affiliated with war, was depicted with the head of a male lion. - - - - - - - #disney #disneyworld #disneysanimalkingdom #dak #aza #myaza #wdw #wdwphotography #kilimanjarosafaris #harambewildlifereserve #lions #wildlifeconservation #disneyconservation #africanwildlife #wildlifeeducation #pantheraleo #disneynature #disneyanimals #disneyphotography #disneyphoto #nikon #nikonphotography #nikonphoto #conservationeducation

If a bear walked by your house every hour, would you still live there? I try and understand what it might be like to be wildlife in the Park. 'Walk a mile in their shoes'. The closest reference I have is the bears walking past my house. Now we only see probably one or two bears a year which is enough to remind me, and my neighbours, to not put out our garbage early, keep our bins clean, and take the birdfeeder down. That said, Mr. Bear has been rewarded for his efforts in the past, and so does meander past the front edge of the houses, nose in the air, hoping for something to catch his fancy. But this is only about twice a year. But it can be a bit unnerving to have something so big walk by your door or just down the middle of the street where children could be. So how many bears would it take for me to say "That's enough!" and move to an upper floor condo in the downtown? In the same vane, if you were an animal that frequented the waterways next to the dikes, how many times would you have to be chased or hunted before you packed up your family and said "We're Outta Here!" ? . PSA: The majority of baby birds learn to fly from the ground up. Their parents, even though you do not see them are still around, are still caring for them & feeding them. Keep pets away from the fledglings so they can continue to learn to fly. Do not spray pesticides. Do not relocate the fledglings, & please do not bring them inside & feed them. There is no need to place them back into the nest, they will just jump out of the nest again. We want wildlife parents to be able to continue to raise their offspring. Understand it is common & normal to see wildlife babies alone while the parents are off looking for food. Please do not be a bird napper! #wildlifeofinstagram #wildlife #wildlifeeducation #wildliferehab #helpwildlife #wildliferescue #animals #howtohelp

For 10 years Kirby lived in a very small cage, with hardly any room to move. Kirby now lives completely free and we are working on #freeflighttraining Blue throated macaws are native to Bolivia where they live in savannahs and scrub land that flood several months out of the year. There are only estimated to be between 200-400 macaws left in the wild. Kirby is the ONLY #bluethroatedmacaw in the WNY area. Don't be afraid to share an intriguing fact about Cicadas in the comment section. Cicadas are fascinating insects known for their unique life cycle and loud buzzing sound. These insects belong to the order Hemiptera and are known for their remarkable ability to stay underground for years before emerging as adults. Cicadas are also famous for their synchronized mass emergences, where thousands of them can appear simultaneously. One interesting fact about Cicadas is that they shed their exoskeletons when molting, leaving behind a ghost-like shell. Sharing such facts can spark interesting discussions and educate others about the wonders of nature. So, feel free to contribute to the conversation with your Cicada knowledge! #CicadaFacts #CicadaInfo #LearnAboutCicadas #CicadaEducation #AllAboutCicadas #CicadaScience #CicadaKnowledge #CicadaLifeCycle #CicadaEcology #CicadaResearch #CicadaBehavior #EntomologyFacts #InsectFacts #NatureFacts #BugFacts #ScienceOfNature #InsectEducation #WildlifeEducation #NatureEducation #BiologyFacts #NatureScience #EcologyFacts #WildlifeFacts #InsectScience #BugBiology #DiscoverInsects #InsectWorld #NatureLearners #Bugs101 #EntomologyEnthusiasts

Mallard. I know, I know… I said I didn’t like waterfowl but I do have a couple pics of them to share. I absolutely love the excitement in the faces of young learners when they see the animals I talk about. One of my favorite things when doing snake talks specifically is to bring out progressively larger snakes. At 7 ft long, this girl is a fantastic grand finale after using a garter snake and rat snake as special assistants. More important than the outward reaction, though, is the value of introducing wildlife, their importance, and what makes each species special and worthy of their role on our planet to our up and coming generations. #gophersnake #pituophis #pituophiscatenifer #colubrid #bigsnake #notarattlesnake #wildlifeeducation #wildlifeeducator #wildlife #education #humansandnature #excitement #longsnake #reptiles #loveofnature

Here at the Houston SPCA's Wildlife Center of Texas, we're currently tending to a Three-toed Box Turtle that was brought to us suffering from an upper respiratory infection. This species is easily recognizable by the distinctive three toes on each hind leg, setting them apart from other turtle species. As omnivores, they consume a variety of plants, insects, and small animals, helping to control populations and contribute to their habitats' health. Also, they serve as environmental health indicators, with their presence indicating healthy ecosystems. Protecting and caring for these turtles is essential for preserving biodiversity and ensuring the well-being of our natural environment. If you encounter an injured turtle or any other wildlife in need of assistance, please reach out to us at 713-861-WILD (9453). Our team is here to provide the necessary care and support to ensure these animals have the best chance at recovery and a return to their natural habitat. Together, we can make a positive impact on the well-being of our local wildlife. #HoustonWildlife #WildlifeRescue #InjuredWildlife #WildlifeEducation #TexasWildlife

We say goodbye to our beloved black bear, Koshari, one of the largest black bears in New Mexico who was over 20 years of age and was an educational ambassador at Wildlife West Nature in Edgewood. He was among the park visitors’ favorites and could often be seen relaxing in full view in front of the plexiglass window in his natural habitat. He was recently in declining health and was surrounded by park volunteers, Roger Alink, park founder, and veterinary staff as they gave their final farewells to this magnificent animal. Koshari came to Wildlife West in 2005 when he was captured by New Mexico Game and Fish officers at Navajo Lake in northern New Mexico. He was going into campgrounds and swimming out to people’s boats to break into their coolers. He was not afraid of people, which was dangerous for the people and this two strikes bear. Luckily, youth working at the park through the NM Youth Conservation Corps program had just completed construction of a new habitat for a black bear! Along with many community donations, Koshari, whose name means clown in Navajo, came to his new home at Wildlife West in August of 2005. In the wild black bears can eat up to 30,000 calories a day and in his younger days, Koshari ate about 150 pounds of food a week, including omnivore kibble, nuts, seeds, meat, and lots of fruits and vegetables. Amazingly, he was a dainty eater and could be seen picking up individual grapes to eat. Koshari will be greatly missed by so many. Wildlife West would like to thank the many supporters who helped to feed Koshari over the years along with the other 20 species of native wildlife at the park. #RIPKoshari #WildlifeWestNature #BlackBear #NewMexicoWildlife #EdgewoodNM #WildlifeEducation #NaturePark #WildlifeRescue #AnimalSanctuary #WildlifeConservation

Baby opossum season is in full swing! We currently have 54 in our care! We receive a lot of orphaned opossum's during this time of year. Mom opossum's will carry their young on her back when they are ready to leave the pouch. When walking around sometimes a baby will fall off mom's back without her knowing. It's important to know if a baby is actually orphaned, we tell people if it is smaller than a dollar bill, it should not be without it's mom. We have already released 41 back into the wild just this year!🐾 #FloridaWildlifeHospital #virginiaopossum #RescueRehabRelease #wildlifeeducation #KeepingWildlifeWild #opossumbaby #floridawildlife

Davison started his journey into conservation back in 2014 in grade 6 when he joined our Conservation Club at Nsefu Primary School. Drawn in by the engaging activities conducted before and after class, such as games and songs, Davison found a refreshing departure from traditional classroom settings. His enthusiasm for these activities was such that he rarely missed a meeting of the conservation club. The park trips Davison participated in provided him with firsthand encounters with the captivating wildlife of South Luangwa and underscored the importance of preserving these natural treasures. Among the memorable experiences was attending "nature night," an event that bolstered Davison's resilience and honed his teamwork abilities. A pivotal moment came during visits to the Chipembele Center, where Davison discovered newfound confidence and passion, qualities that were nurtured further through programs like the Aspiring Conservation Leaders initiative. He also had the opportunity to develop and implement an eco-stove project. The success of this initiative was so significant that it garnered funding from @schulprojektesambia, allowing Davison to continue managing it for another year. The eco stove project's success endured beyond Davison's tenure, with ongoing support from @biocarbon_partners . Today, the project continues to thrive under the management of another Chipembele alum, demonstrating the lasting impact of Davison's contributions to conservation efforts in the region. Through his conservation journey, Davison developed a deep understanding of the symbiotic relationship between humans and wildlife, fuelling his passion to protect and conserve biodiversity. This passion has led him to pursue studies in Biodiversity and Ecology at CBU, with aspirations to become a field researcher in the future. Join us for another #WildlifeWednesday! Ever wondered why I smell a bit wild after handling garter snakes at Mather Field? These common North American snakes have a surprisingly stinky defense mechanism! Whether in woodlands or near water, they thrive across the continent, from Alaska to Florida. And no, it's not a "garden" or "gardener" snake, it's "garter," like the stocking band. They're harmless to humans but pack a mild venom for prey. Witnessing these creatures in the wild around the vernal pools at Mather Field is always a thrill, especially for students on field trips! Did you know female garter snakes give birth to live young instead of laying eggs? Catch us next week for more and consider supporting our mission on the Big Day of Giving this Thursday. Every donation helps! #wildlifeeducation
