In the spirit of Freedom Day, commemorating our country’s first post-apartheid elections (1994) and the day on which the new constitution was introduced, we wish to share this moving photographic work, ‘Nelson Mandela’s return to his cell on Robben Island IV’ (1994) by the renowned photographer, Jurgen Schadeberg. This photograph of Nelson Mandela looking through the bars of his Robben Island Cell in 1994 was voted as one of the 50 most memorable images of the 20th century by The Photographers Gallery in London. * It’s 30 years since the start of democracy in South Africa. May we hold onto the steadfast values of our proud constitution in this month ahead of national elections 🙏🏽🙏🏿🙏🏼 #freedomday #southafricanphotography #democracy #peaceonearth

4/29/365. Selection of Durban water towers* - usually found with an associated water reservoir on topographic high points around Durban suburbia. Somewhat ignored as structures, I find them fascinating. An intersection of engineering, construction and architecture. To note are some towers unrelated to municipal water; in those instances the tower appears to be a dedicated on-site water source. * shout out to Bernd and Hilla Becker . #photoaday #52weeks #365days #southafricanphotography #garthwalker #misterwalkerdesign #ijusi #ijusigraphics #durban #durbanvibes #architecture #durbanarchitecture #industrialarchitecture #watertowers

4/28/365. Kingsfield Place, Field Street, Durban Central. Architect and date unknown (late 1980s ?)* Bog standard office building on a tricky site - Field Street (now Joe Slovo) frontage with dog-leg Shield Lane / Field Street intersecting mid building. Ground floor entrance and 15 floor tower above with associated four floor retail/office space jutting to the left of Shield Lane. In my view certain aspects of the detailing has/had design potential - the double volume glazed entrance lobby for starters. The 'brutalist' look was likely budget driven - minimal finishes and exposed cast concrete, with narrow set-back window openings give the building a somewhat 'car park with light-slots' aesthetic. From recall, in period, this was at the upper end of CBD office developments, at the tail-end of a time before corporates moved north to La Lucia and Umhlanga Ridge. *once again zero info I can find. . #photoaday #52weeks #365days #southafricanphotography #garthwalker #misterwalkerdesign #ijusi #ijusigraphics #durban #durbanvibes #architecture #durbanarchitecture #brutalistarchitecture

4/27/365. Sloane Road Townhouses, Garvies Beach, Bluff, Durban. Architect and date unknown.* Discovered on a cycle through suburbia. A bit run down, but oh so brutalist. Cast shuttered concrete, freestanding, storied row townhouses, at the end of Sloane Road terminating at the beach parking lot. Right on the sand proper, so an ultra-harsh climate for any building (hence the raw concrete). Most steelwork I could see was rusting. Highly unusual design and finish, with nary a Tuscan in sight... * I seem to have a vague recollection that the architect may have been Luis Ferreira-da-Silva (?) circa late 1980s (?) . #photoaday #52weeks #365days #southafricanphotography #garthwalker #misterwalkerdesign #ijusi #ijusigraphics #durban #durbanvibes #architecture #durbanarchitecture

4/26/365. Brickhill Parkade. Boscombe Place, Durban Beachfront. Architect* and date unknown (1980s?). And Victoria Park Entrance. Boscombe Place, Durban Beachfront. Architect* and date unknown (1980s?). Brickhill Parkade features an interesting brutalist (ish) cast concrete curtain wall running along Brickhill Road, then round the corner into Boscombe Place (vehicle entrance). The tapering height wall runs on two sides of the underground multi-level parkade. The 'ground level roof' is open turf - a sort of public park. In the 80s I recall the parkade as the car parking option feeding consumers into the defined beachfront precinct between West Street and Smith Street. At the time this was South Africa's first (and along with Hillbrow in Johannesburg the only) seven day trading precinct. The Durban Municipality managed to circumvent apartheid-era bylaws to allow traders to open seven days a week including public holidays. Bizarre now - but then it was revolutionary. Nowadays the parkade serves Shopright shoppers over the road, and assorted short and long term vehicle parking. Further down Boscombe place is another cast concrete curtain wall in a mini-brutalist style serving as an entrance feature to Victoria Park. My one observation is how well built these structures remain decades later (despite little maintenance or use currently). * I reckon Durban City Architects may be due credit here. But that's a guess... . #photoaday #52weeks #365days #southafricanphotography #garthwalker #misterwalkerdesign #ijusi #ijusigraphics #durban #durbanvibes #architecture #durbanarchitecture

4/25/365. "Wisdom Through Growth". Chromatic relief ceramic panel. Chelsea Preparatory School (Senior Campus), Chelsea Drive Durban North. James Hall. 1966. Quick look back to my old mate James Hall. Found this referenced in an obscure academic dissertation online. The address was incorrect - meaning I spent days looking at schools in Durban North to find it. No luck. Ongoing Body of work 'Ravine" by Cape Town based photographer, John Second. Ravine -  A deep, narrow gorge with steep sides, very difficult to negotiate an exit from. "Initially this work was entirely about my unravelling through the premise of failure: but the further I went the more compulsive it became. Wandering parts of the city I live in, the town I grew up in and the Karoo I have made these images as documents of myself, for myself." The work spans a time frame of eight years, the earliest from 2016 and most recently in 2024. Very proud to have John as TTLC mentee. @johnalexsecond #contemporaryphotography #photographyeducation #education #documentaryphotography #africanphotography #advancedphotography #southafricanphotography #africanart #africanphotography #portraitphotography #photographyeducation #photographymentorship #mentorship #fineartphotography

4/24/365. Truro House, 17 Victoria Embankment, Durban. Currently the Regional Headquarters of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education. Architect and date unknown* Your stock standard 'brutalesque' office block from (I think) the 1980s in the era of the Tricameral Parliament at the tail-end of Apartheid. I seem to recall the House of Representatives ("Coloureds") and House of Delegates ("Indians") were situated on the Esplanade in period - and this may have been built for that purpose* (?) The current building fits my criteria for the 'Durban brutalist aesthetic'. Parking at street level with two floor office platform above. The remaining eight floors (U-shaped) continue the overall aesthetic of concrete, brick and stone-ship cast panels. On inspection the building has survived quite well as an SOE managed structure - one of the benefits of 'bullet-proof brutalist' construction materials. * again its been impossible to find any information on the building. * The Tricameral story is from my own recollection, which may be inaccurate. . #photoaday #52weeks #365days #southafricanphotography #garthwalker #misterwalker #misterwalkerdesign #ijusi #notesfromtheinterior #durban #durbanvibes #durbanarchitecture #architecture

Finally dusted off my camera for a spontaneous mini shoot with Cole the other day. Their unapologetic authenticity is so inspiring—it's been a push for me to explore my own self-expression in photography, without being held back by expectations and the rules I was taught. It's art. The Alexandra township, about 13km north east of Joburg was established in 1912 by a farmer is said to have been named after either his wife or daughter. It was the only place where black South African citizens could buy land until the 1930s. So often the epicentre of much of the turbulence that impacts South African society. It was the heart of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and ANC violence in the lead up to independence in 1994. And again, Alexandra marked the start of countrywide xenophobic attacks in May 2008. Not without cause did Alexandra get the biblical moniker “Gomorra”. But less-known is its vibrant daily life, street-side entertainment venues and bustling market places that places it at the heart of South Africa’s vibrant cultural heritage. #africanculture #marketlife #africanportraits #portraitsofafrica #africanphotography #africa #southafrica #johannesburg #johannesburgphotography #africanprints #township #alexandra #alextownship #alexandratownship #alexandratownshipphotography #southafricanphotography #southafricanphotographers In the final prep stages of a long overland trip through southern and east africa - hopefully taking me up to both Ethiopia and DRC (situation-permitting) https://www.facebook.com/GeorgePhilipasPrints/

4/22/365. TROPICAL BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURE (in Durban)* New Durban Station Complex (Main Building), Umgeni Road, Durban Central. Architect: Stauch Vorster + Partners. Lead Architect: Tielman Scholtz. 1981. Part 1: the building. Durban's original railway station on Soldiers Way (Street-Wilson & Fyfe. 1894-1904) was, by the 1970s, no longer fit for purpose. SAR&H commissioned an all new station on Umgeni Road east of the old station. At the time the station relocation was highly controversial - even more so once the proposed building design was presented. Brutalist architecture as a style is loved or hated - no middle ground here - and the Stauch Vorster station is a 'truly brutal' example. I recall in period much frothing-at-the-mouth in public debate. For me, as a fan of the style, this building is world-class, and Durbans only true example of the genre. The Stauch Vorster design* has the building elevated above street level retaining the Umgeni pavement thoroughfare, nowadays used by street traders in some numbers. To the ends of the elevated platform are concrete pedestrian ramps leading to the open public space above. On that rests the main box-like building (appears to be four floors) with no openings bar jutting concrete 'fins' to the exterior, creating a sort-of exo-skeleton on the outside. The structural concrete pillars have inset or shaped monochromatic mosaic tiled panels as decoration. The building is vast (!) and for reasons we know all too well, not in the best of health some 43 years later. That said, the construction, attention to detail and high quality/expensive finishes are evident. For me personally, a remarkable and much underrated building after a few hours walking the precinct... * detailed (or any) information on the project has proved impossible to find. This review is a personal take on buildings in Durban that I deem to be 'brutalesque'. Access to the station is limited. Part 2 will look at the lead architect on this project... . #photoaday #52weeks #365days #southafricanphotography #garthwalker #misterwalkerdesign #ijusi #ijusigraphics #durban #durbanvibes #architecture #durbanarchitecture #stauchvorsterarchitects

4/21/365. Tropical Brutalist Architecture* *A personal label My current fetish is to document Durban's 'brutalist (ish) architecture'. To do so, I set myself a few general parameters. 1: the building need loosely conform to the brutalist aesthetic. 2: the primary material need be concrete, with or without cladding - if so, then with concrete as a substrate. 3: the building finish need be monochromatic or raw (unpainted). 4: the structure need fit the 'brutalist style' timeframe as built (give or take)... Brutalism remains a controversial movement/style in architectural circles. Each to their own, but I'm a huge fan. Brutalist architecture emerged as a style in (mainly) post WWII Britain (1950 to early 1980s) as a reconstruction movement to rebuild economically at scale, cost, and within a timeframe. Simple modular construction, raw materials, as built finishes, and visible structure were paramount. Design (arguably), decoration and bespoke finishes, were considered superfluous. With this in mind I went a-hunting throughout Durban. Most buildings I found date to the 1980s, and were likely the outcome of considered design or construction costs, build time, and end-user needs. The photo reel shares iconic examples of the Brutalist Style (UK only as the style was/is now global), so you get the idea of what I'm looking for... . #photoaday #52weeks #365days #southafricanphotography #garthwalker #misterwalkerdesign #ijusi #ijusigraphics #durban #durbanvibes #architecture #durbanarchitecture #brutalistarchitecture
