Things in the studio sometimes take a big 💩and just like in life, often the most beautiful things arise from the ashes of our failures. This “Medusa” necklace started its life almost a year before as a mistake. I was trying out a new technique with Silver clay. The center stone was a big 9mm clear Swarovski crystal. Unfortunately, when I fired it, it clouded and was a complete disaster. I swore (like a sailor of course) and put the piece aside for months. But it kept nudging at me. I loved the rest of the design but was having a hard time accepting my failure. Finally, one day I decided to cut out the stone and replace it with a deep blue flash Labradorite. The results speak for themselves (and it sold within 24 hours of posting!). So, the lesson I got was that even when things look like a big old mess, if you’re willing to give some time and love, they can come back as something beautiful and better than before 💙
Update: Sold The sparkle of the sea! Paraiba blue Apatite gemstone earrings capture the water colors of the Caribbean. The stones are rare. Approx 1.75 carats each set in sterling silver. Do you ever wonder how some of my one of a kind pieces are made? Here’s a step through journey of some of my sculpted silver pieces and how I go from design to finish! . Each piece is unique. It usually starts with a sketch. Then, I make a copy of the sketch and enlarge it to compensate for the shrinkage that occurs when using silver clay. . Sometimes I’ll create a model out of sculpting clay, bake it and use this to create a rubber mold. The rubber mold can then packed with silver clay. This is a great way to capture a lot of detail. I used this method when I made the round pendant and the Hawaiian Hook necklace. . Other times, I will free sculpt the silver clay as I did with the mermaid piece, and the beach heart. . Free sculpting is more challenging because the silver clay dries out quickly. You have to work in small batches and let each part dry before moving on to the next section. . Once the silver sculpture is fully dried and sanded, it gets fired in a kiln for 2+ hours. . When it comes out of the kiln, it’s has shrunk by 8-12%, and is a frosty white. . It gets re-sanded and polished. Any stones I might be adding get set, and it gets a patina finish (darkened) then polished again to bring out the highlights. . Finally, I tumble each piece in water and stainless steel shoot for 1+ hours to give it a final polish. . As you can see, it’s quite time consuming but the result is a one of a kind piece with so much detail! . The Octopus is a current commission I’m working on for a client who loves the sea! . It’s snowing today here in Virginia and while I’m not a big fan of snow, I can absolutely appreciate how beautiful everything looks along with the quiet that comes with a snowfall. . It’s funny- 3 years ago I thought I would be in the Bahamas on my sailboat this time of year. But life happens right? Timelines got delayed, a pandemic hit and expectations had to be adjusted. So instead of sailing the blue seas, I’m sitting by a cozy fire watching the snow. . I know someday I’ll be on my boat. The dream is still alive and well as we embark on the next stage of the boats refit this spring. . Until then, life has taught me to slow down and appreciate the beauty in each day. Are you entranced by the Northern Lights? Those swirling tendrils of color that light the sky like magic. A beauty to behold (like this Venus necklace inspired by the phenomenon) and a cool scientific reason for their existence. The energy for making the northern lights comes from something called “solar wind” which is generated by the sun. The solar wind drifts away from the Sun through space, carrying tiny protons and electron particles. When the solar wind reaches Earth, it runs into the Earth’s magnetic field. The magnetic field forces the solar wind to travel towards the magnetic poles both north and south. As the particles enter the Earth’s atmosphere, they release energy. This year, my word is "Grow" 2020 wasn't filled with big expectations.
