Finished!!! My very first knife, hand forged from a large railroad bolt and handled with recycled scrap! I magnet fished the bolt out of the Sabine River in Big Sandy, TX, the stacked handle is made of wood from our old box spring, the backlight board from a broken TV, and scrap steel plate pulled from a dumpster. 100 layers of birch bark later, and a good 8 hours of cleaning and prepping birch bark, now time to compress, add a few layers as needed and cut and fit the pommel, then into the oven for the natural birch glue to do its work. Quite pleased how this old cleaver turned out. I brought it at a car boot sale with a taped up wooden handle that was split and rotten, and the blade was covered in rust. After striping apart, derusting and cleaning up I fitted a stacked handle of walnut and maple with a copper hilt (?) . Shaped and finished with a boiled linseed and wax finish.
