Is Raversyde worth for kids? Oh for sure! When entering, the kids get a map with a quest on it. Ik each section there are clues to complete the map! Very fun and educational for kids. As well when we were there, there were free workshops for kids: cartoon drawing and making masks! Anna’s opinion on Atlantic wall visit: fun, educational and pretty(because walking through the dunes). She liked the least: it was rather crowded at start. So what is next in store? The year has started slow, time and health werent helping 🤪 First family holiday to the Netherlands again. Will then see about time. But summer will be hiking in Poland(returning to Bieszszady) and Denmark with my little girl 😋. And possibly some last minute things. Which parts of the Fagnes are must visits? The Fagnes do get remote! Specially away from Botrange and Baraque Michel. And on weekdays evenmore. How hard is hiking around the Fagnes? 95% is easy enough and doable for the whole family! Around Signal de Botrange, there is a great visitor centre with playground for kids! Id say only the sections at the river valleys can be challenging. Because they get very slippery. The weather is more of a challenge then the terrain though! So always keep an eye out for the weather. What NOT to do when hiking in the hautes fagnes(or anywhere): 1. do not sh*t 💩🚽 right next to a path! So so so unappreciated by the other people hiking there! 2. Do not smoke is a good idea, since a fire started by you could kill others… 3. Keep dogs on a leash, the wild animals will be happy, however with a growing wolf population, wolf might see your dog as an intruder and might feel the need to attack him. 4. Dont look away when someone passes you and says hello 🤪 say hello back, it wont kill you 🤪😂 5. Dont wear white sneakers in 95% of the year! It does get so muddy up there! 6. Dont rely on mobile phone coverage on every part of the Fagnes! People do get lost there. 7. When you feel you want to wild-camp outwith the bivouac places. Do not make a fire. Leave the place like you found it. 8. Leave no trace! No garbage, no litering, no walking on protected areas where nature is restoring! 9. Do not go into wilderness resting zones! There are designated areas that are cut-off for us visitors. Here animals are left alone and have rest. 10. The most imoortant: do not not have fun! Reaching the Fagnes by Public transport isnt too hard. There are two main options for me: I use the train from the coast to Eupen(direct train, the longest journey in Belgium actually). Then I hike up to the Fagnes. Which is roughly 10km before you hit the woods. Otherwise, get of at Verviers trainstation and take the bus up to Botrange. Are the Fagnes dangerous? Yes and no! The fog gets notoriously thick a lot of times of the year. People do get lost here, people did die in the marshes. Wild camping isn’t permitted on the Hautes fagnes🙈😇🥾 however there are three wild camping areas that can be used: Bivouac La Gilleppe, Bivouac Soor and Bivouac de La Bergerie. Free of charge! Pre-booking is a must though, they do check who is there. Arriving at sunset and leaving at sunrise is the rule. Sadly no fires anymore! Reservation can be made: https://botrange.be/nl/bivouacs/ I prefer the Bivouac de La Bergerie, its the most remote one. And during weekdays you are usually alone. Beware these places offer just a place to legally pitch your tent and a place where u can eat. So dont expect a camping with facilities! Btw the wolf is AI generated, so it is NOT real, just my dad playing around a bit, he edits my pics after i make them🤪😂😂 Now back to the post, Wolf and the fagnes… its an amazing story! In 2019 when I started going there regularly, there was only talk of a roaming wolf, 5 years later 3 wolf packs are resident! Is it easy to spot a wolf there? Heck no! I havent spotted one yet. However… the section around Herzogenhügel I generally spot most signes of wolf presence, so check it out there. As well the Imgenbroicher Venn is a good shout too. The whole region is home to one pack. A second pack is on a military area around Elsenborn and third just over the border in Germany, although geographically still the Fagnes, its part of German Eifen region. Do you need to bring water? Id say yes… defo in the summer. It can be very dry up there during the summer. The water is peak/boggy, so drinkable but with a very high ph value, so the taste isnt the greatest. I take my bottle with a water filter anyway(even in the winter when there is plenty of water): #lifestraw. It filter 99.9% of the germs out of any water! Beware, aprt from Bottange and Baraque Michel there are no shops, cafes or restaurants… bring your own is the rule! My love and passion for the Hautes Fagnes is very real! I come here around 2/3 times a year and over the years seen it change and become wilder. So the change has been for the good! Its defo an area that I know intimately. So anyone ever needing guidance or tips, always feel free to ask me! It would be my pleasure 🥾🙏🏼🥾🙏🏼 but general interaction should be done though. Day 3: what was supposedly an uneventful treck back into Eupen turned out quiet different! First the exciting part… still not sure what I seen and heard! First I heard this commotion in the woods, then a growling sound(like a dog but not a dog), then I heard a deer screaming for its life, crashing sounds and saw the deer running with something in hot pursuit! I believe it to be a wolf. However the sounds were strange, it wasnt like a dog or the way Id believe wolf sounds when hunting. The growl was defo strange. After Id thought, a lynx? Since the animal following the deer was smaller then the deer and had a yellow/grey fur. It was so quick and inbetween bushes as well. Who has a thought? A wolf sounds more logical, but lynx have returned too and are way more seldom! So a view like this would be significant? Maybe the people of @welkomwolf can do something with this? The rest was a struggle, i must have hobbled along like a disabled person, trying to avoid pressure on the spot(s) of the blisters. It was defo a battle of will against pain! Day 2 starting with aches and blisters 🤪 but the sun was shining, so who am I to complain! From the Bivouac place I hiked up toward Baraque Michel passing long meadows with amazing views! The soreness was quickly gone! Not really, each step was torture! That I continued was pure strength, will and a lot of stupidity 🤪😂😂 I think a normal person would have opted to get home and get those blisters healed. Not me, I can do that tomorrow too 🤪 muddy paths were the rule right up Barauque Michel, from there I went down towards the wonderfull Bayhoun waterfall(which were very full with school kids 🤪) and rise back to the top of Belgium at Signal de Bottrange. From there I crossed the swamps towards the Herzogenhügel. This part was actually amazing! You cross this wide swamp and no people to be seen! Just weird trees and wolf poo, lots of wolf poo 🐺🐺🐺. Wolves are thriving here very clearly! And ended back at the bivouac de la Bergerie for last night in the woods. It was hard hard hard though! Will power had to be upped, when i was at Signal Bottrange i even thought, just take the bus and by 7pm i will be home… but no kept going! Day 1 of my wild camping trip in the Hautes Fagnes. Yesterday(didnt have phoneconnection all night, so it going up today 🤪). I hiked up from Eupen station towards the Venn Kreuz(cross of the Ven for protection of wanderers). From there passed three distinct sections of the Fagnes: Imgenbroicher Venn, Brack Venn and south of the Fagne Wallonie. This time I chose to stay on an official bivouac place: bivouac de la Bergerie. For both nights. Since its central for both routes yesterday and today. How did the knee hold out? Amazing! No pain… which is a huge relief 😍😍😍 weather was grey and dull, with some showers. Still it felt good to be out in nature and boy did I see many signs of animal life! From wolf traces to beaver dams, from (loads and loads) wild boar traces to raccoon steps. Wildlife certainly is on a good trip up here! It was a struggle with the big rucksack though, could tell my body wasnt used to it anymore 🤪 and because of a miscalculation i did 43km instead of the planned 35km! It was actually a struggle to reach the bivouac place before nightfall! Only just made it on time 🙈 feet sore, back sore, cold, blisters!
