Little did I anticipate the myriad challenges that awaited me. Despite the trials, I founded Natural Shea Care and created True Shea, an exquisite, all-natural shea butter product. Beginning humbly in my basement, I diligently marketed my products at local stores, churches, and flea markets. Today, True Shea graces the shelves of 1,500 Kroger stores and is available online through retail giants like Amazon, Target, and Walmart. Natural Shea Care is a black-owned, natural beauty care company headquartered in Cincinnati. Our mission is to support and empower the women of Ghana, where we source our shea butter. In a world that never slows down, Merigen McGraw, the founder of Meriden Mental Fitness and Director of the Workplace Mindfulness Team at The Osher Center for Integrative Health at the University of Cincinnati, is teaching individuals and groups how to cultivate optimal wellbeing using preventive mental wellbeing and brain training techniques. We’re excited to celebrate the work she’s doing this #WomensHistoryMonth! “Getting hit by a car on my bike in my early 20s made me realize that I had been taught more about square dancing, playing the recorder, and the periodic table than understanding my own inner world. As I delved deeper into my research, studies, and work in the field, I discovered that my own underwhelming education in preventive mental well-being was not an isolated experience. Today, through Meriden Mental Fitness, we have coached a variety of populations toward improved mental wellbeing, including lawyers, C-suite executives, educators, professional athletes including the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns NFL teams, healthcare workers, patients, adolescents, families, and beyond. I’ve created and implemented regional and state-wide programming as a consultant for partners such as Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Cradle Cincinnati, Central Clinic Behavioral Health, the Cincinnati Health Department, the Montgomery County Alcohol Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services Board, and UC Health. Our programming has a proven track record. Post our 8-week workplace mindfulness program, a sample of 413 associates from nine different companies across the Tri-State region, saw statistically significant decreases in stress, increases in resiliency, and decreases in burnout. Our next goal is to embed this work into accelerators across the city. We know that startup founders need education on their mental health along with education on their balance sheets. The mental health of founders is a strategic priority for the companies that they run. We’ve been lucky enough to start this work with Main Street Ventures and hope to expand mental health support for entrepreneurs in all spaces across Cincinnati and beyond.” #StartupCincy

We’re honored to highlight Matthew Terry, CEO and Founder of Suade this #BlackHistoryMonth. Matthew is building an outstanding startup with a sales tool that leads with empathy over logic. As a presenter at StartupCincy Week 2023 and an active ecosystem member, we can’t wait to see what he does next. “Suade believes, above all else, that empathy sells more than logic. To have empathy in conversations you must be armed with relevant information about your prospect as well as strategies around how to convey that information. Suade provides a structured playbook on how to approach prospects before, during, and after sales calls. Our dynamic system uses key information about the prospect’s customer persona to guide conversations in real-time improving every sales reps performance. When I first started Suade, John Stieger, was one of the first people I came to for advice, and he helped my team and I acquire a 6-figure grant and eventually became Suade's first Angel Investor! This is a prime example of how the Cincinnati ecosystem has been a supportive gift that keeps on giving. The connections, mentors, and friends I gleaned from the ecosystem have lasted a lifetime and have been crucial to my growth as an entrepreneur. Are you a student looking for an Internship or Fellowship for the upcoming year? NKU undergraduates have an amazing exclusive opportunity to work with Blue North! The NKU CIE / Blue North Fellowship will give students the opportunity for a deep immersion into entrepreneurship and #StartupCincy while still attending NKU. Funded through Blue North’s grant to CIE, the Fellows will serve as student workers through the NKU CIE INKUBIZ program. They will start the Fellowship during the Summer between their Junior and Senior Year, working full-time 35 hours per week for 14 academic weeks. During the Fall and Spring Semesters, the Fellowship will continue part-time at 25 hours per week pending academic course load. In addition to their financial pay for the Fellowship, they will also have the opportunity to earn 3 credit hours for completion (pending program requirements/approval). *Start date: March 25th, 2024 *Training: 3/25 - 5/10 (flexible/minimal hours) *Full-time begins: May 13th, 2024 (post-finals) Feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any questions/concerns! We're kicking off #BlackHistoryMonth by passing the mic to VaLanDria Smith-Lash, Founder of Coarse Culture, a self-care brand that specializes in whipped shea butter products. “I developed Coarse Culture when my mother was diagnosed with lupus, a long-term autoimmune disease that left her hair and skin brittle and irritated. After asking doctors for recommendations and researching products to try to find relief for my mother, I decided to make my own product, with all-natural ingredients that provided comfort without aggravating sensitivities. 2024 has started strong with the launch of Coarse Culture’s Amazon storefront! Being a member of Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator program is helping us scale our customer base at exponential rates. This year we are looking forward to officially making Cincinnati our new home with the opening of our new manufacturing space in April. We eagerly anticipate making connections and launching wholesale partnerships with local businesses within the community. I am so excited for the countless opportunities that will unfold as we officially step into our new headquarters at Miami University. Beyond the mere establishment of the space, lies the heartfelt anticipation of involving students in the intricacies of Coarse Culture. My vision for this new chapter is deeply rooted in the desire to engage students in day-to-day operations. During my time at Miami, I harnessed the university's connections to pursue my passion for growing my business, and now, beyond the college walls, I yearn to provide students with a firsthand understanding of what it truly means to run a business. Norwood-based bitcoin miner @GRIID_Infrastructure (NEO: GRDI), cofounded and led by @MiamiUniversity alum Trey Kelly (CEO, MU '10 in Mathematics and Statistics & Systems Analysis), opened trading yesterday on the @Nasdaq as @StartupCincy's newest publicly traded company. “We believe that our listing on Nasdaq will enhance our visibility, liquidity, and broaden our investor base as we continue to strengthen our market position and reinforce our commitment to delivering shareholder value,” Kelly said in a news release. “We see tremendous opportunity as we build our company at the intersection of energy and money. There is so much ahead of us – today is just the beginning.” Founded in 2018, GRIID manages, builds and operates bitcoin mining facilities using cheap, carbon-free energy. According to the @CincinnatiBusinessCourier, the company generates computing power to process transactions taking place on the bitcoin blockchain, and it makes money from fees and the net new bitcoin that’s minted. Our 2nd annual UC Startup Weekend was a HUGE success!! Look how many people earned their entrepreneur hats 🥹🎩👒 ✅ 100+ students participated ✅ 28 teams formed ✅ 30+ #StartupCincy mentors dropping in to volunteer today We ended #ucsw2024 with 3 winners: 🥇1st place ($1500): “CaTable,” a tech-enabled unit for tabletop games that automates the process of resetting a game board 🥈 2nd place ($1000): “Pantry,” an app for sourcing the best grocery store deals using the Tembo tech stack (Tembo is a local dev shop and corporate partner of ours at the 1819 Innovation Hub) 🥉3rd place ($750): “FuelProTek,” a concept that enables enterprise fleets to monitor fuel flow in their vehicles for theft prevention 🎖 We also had an award for Best Customer Discovery, in which the judges allocated $500 to the team that worked hardest to validate their idea over the weekend. That went to “Shower Beer,” an excellent branding concept for a light beer and accompanying accessory line. With 28 teams participating, we had to break the final pitch competition into 3 heats/judging rooms which meant we had runner-up awards as well. Those concepts each received $500 to advance their ideas — 🎹 “Junietta,” a compact and portable music synthesizer/electric piano 📊 “Ecostats,” an IoT tool for monitoring household utility usage and suggesting reduction strategies 🍱 “Bayleaf and Beyond,” a meal kit platform for authentic and affordable subcontinental recipes Thank you SO MUCH to all our amazing partners, mentors, and judges for making this incredible weekend happen.
