I admit, this post is a little different than others. I created this account so I could talk about different bars in the St. Louis area and I concentrate on locally owned taverns, cocktail bars and drinking establishments. This post is different in that this establishment is also a retail space. However, before you stop reading, let me assure you that Brothers Beer and Bourbon in Ballwin is a locally owned establishment that also provides a full bar with cocktails, beer and wine. The difference is that if you like something you drank at the bar, you can buy it on your way out for your home bar. I always assumed this shop to be a liquor store that offered random tastings and samples so I was surprised to see that this is basically a fully stocked bar with a retail section. What I imagined was a small sample counter is actually a huge bar with 24 beers on tap and a full selection of spirits to make great cocktails or simple mixed drinks. The bar seats at least 9 people in large bar seats and the seating area has large comfortable leather chairs and couches. There are a few TVs to watch a game but the space is better suited for hanging out with friends and enjoying a cocktail or two. I may have mentioned this before but I am a huge fan of Sandy Valley Brewing, and Brothers Beer and Bourbon in Ballwin has 4 of their beers on draft. But it gets better because Steve, the owner of the Ballwin location, also does a Sandy Valley collaboration where they get together to share tasting notes to create a unique beer. If you’re out looking for a new beer or you’re curious about a particular spirit, give Brothers Beer and Bourbon in Ballwin a visit. The worst that can happen is you enjoy a drink or 2. The best that can happen is you enjoy a drink or two and walk out with a couple bottles of liquor and a 6 pack of new beer.

This sold out class on April 25, The Color of Chocolate, learned to use white, milk, and dark chocolates to create marvelous treats with certified chocolatier Audrey Scherrer. They learned the technique to caramelize white chocolate for white chocolate blondies with cashews, made salted caramel truffles enrobed in milk or dark chocolate, plus created an easy fudgy dark chocolate brownie. Audrey’s upcoming classes are a series of Afternoons with Audrey classes available on May 14, June 18, and July 16 with a new menu each month.

Everyone was buzzing about tacos with the engaging Sharon Tutko in a sold out Date Night class on April 25, Taco the Town. They spent a fun evening creating Oaxacan garlic-habanero queso with corn tortilla chips, carne asada birria tacos pan-fried to perfection with beef birria consommé for dipping, Baja shrimp tacos with creamy pickled onion-radish-corn-jalapeño slaw in warm corn tortillas with chihuahua cheese, all served with choice of avocado crema, mango-cilantro-jalapeño pico de gallo spiked with tequila, and more queso. They learned to make Spanish rice scented with Mexican oregano, quick black beans with toasted cumin, plus chocolate-pistachio churros, and a pineapple-mint margarita with a spicy rim. Wright’s Tavern 🥂 I cannot say enough good things about our experience at @wrightsonwydown!!! I’m so glad I was finally able to get a reservation! It’s the hottest new(ish) restaurant in town and everyone is trying to get in there. The food was obviously amazing and the service was unmatched. Everyone we talked to was so kind and never made you feel rushed. When our server was pouring the hot fudge on our Sundae with a huge smile the entire time we asked if this was his favorite part of his job and he said without skipping a beat “yes, literally every night! I love it!” Clearly the Wright’s Sundae is the main character in this post and I will think about it forever. It came with so many different toppings and 3 different scoops of ice cream. If you go, it’s a must!! Adrienne and I got the Steak Frites and the steak was perfect and the massive amount of fries were hand cut and soooo tasty! Shannon got the roasted chicken and loved it! We also ordered the gooiest Mac n cheese and impulsively ordered the onion rings when we saw some walk past our table. It was so worth it 😋 They had a great cocktail menu but we were feeling wine that night and opted for a bottle instead. I will be ordering some next time though! Serving breakfast for dinner is always a winning idea with dishes normally saved for leisurely weekend fare. This sold out class on April 24, Brinner is a Winner, with Lydia Gwin learned to make maple-spiced candied bacon, Bloody Mary deviled eggs, sweet potato pancakes with cinnamon cream sauce, avocado-street corn toast, cantaloupe and cucumber salad with mint-lime vinaigrette, plus a paloma cocktail. Our next brinner class, What’s for Brinner, is available on June 23 with Sheri Doe.

This sold out class on April 24, Vegetable-centric, learned to roast, braise, blanch, steam, mash, fry, pickle, and create a gratin of any vegetable, cream of any vegetable soup, butter-braised vegetables, roasted vegetables, vegetable purée, plus learned how to cook leafy greens, and enhance vegetables using dairy or cheese. Matt’s upcoming classes include Knife Lessons To Cut By on June 19, and Peach Party on July 31.

This sold out Day in the Kitchen: Bread Basket class on April 24 with Melissa Clendenin conquered the art of baking delicious yeast breads with all kinds of delicious, home-baked breads, including baguettes, rolls, pizza, rye, whole-grain, sandwich breads, and delicious cinnamon rolls. The class learned to make natural starters, sponges, crusty breads, and enriched doughs, and learned how to make the amazing no-knead, slow-rise bread. Each participant took home sourdough starter. Our next bread class, The Bread Rises in the Yeast, is available on July 15.
