Please welcome Dr. Martin D. Cox to the Raven Community as he focuses his work at SGGCS in the 5th & 6th Grade English Language Arts classrooms! Dr. Cox is excited to bring a rich set of both classroom and leadership experiences in education to SGGCS. He has been an educator for 33 years as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools. His experiences took place in New York State along with his most recent work as a 5th Grade Language Arts teacher at Blessed Sacrament School in Savannah. Dr. Cox received his doctoral degree in Educational Leadership at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, a Masters in Elementary Education from Nazareth College of Rochester, and a Bachelor of Science In Communications from Ohio University. A native of Rochester, New York, he graduated from our Mother of Sorrows School and Cardinal Mooney High School. He and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, reside in Bluffton and have three children. Dr. Cox enjoys running, bicycling, swimming, and kayaking. He is a high school and youth baseball umpire and basketball referee in Beaufort County. Over the last few weeks, 1st Grade has been learning about astronomy. Our students, with the help of our amazing 1st Grade teachers Mrs. McKamey and Mrs. Smith, have had fun exploring the sun, the moon, the stars and the eight planets in our solar system. Field Day is right around the corner, and this year the Ravens PAC will be tie-dying white t-shirts! Ziploc bags and rubber bands were sent home with your students today! We ask that you supply a new plain white t-shirt and encourage you and your child use this as a STEAM project by designing the twists & turns in their shirt with the supplied rubber bands. All shirts need to be rubber banded and have your child’s name in the collar with a Sharpie marker to ensure they receive their correct shirt back after we've completed the tie-dye process! Rubber banded and labeled t-shirts must be returned no later than Wednesday, May 15th. We are proud to announce that four of our 8th graders have volunteered to represent St. A's today, at the St. Thomas Aquinas High School - Edison, NJ STREAM FAIRE. In a few short weeks, these Lady Engineers became our Advanced Robotics Team, led by Mr. Tony De Bari, our Tech Co-Ordinator, and learned how to code, wire, and build a 3D printed Robot Dog. They named the Robot Dog, ADA, after Ada Lovelace, one of our Spotlight on Women in STEM, that they learned about in Tech Class this year. We congratulate them on their steadfast commitment to this project, and know that they will be outstanding representatives of our STEM/STREAM curriculum here at St. A's.
