My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh REVIEW 2/5 ⭐️⭐️ Man, this book is a tough one to tackle. I got sucked into it because of all the hype on Bookstagram, but honestly, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I mean, I kinda liked it, but also kinda didn’t. There’s a lot on my mind about it, but I’ll keep it short. At first, I really felt for the main character, this young woman dealing with loss, depression, and anxiety after her parents passed away. The author did a good job showing how tough mental health issues can be, but man, the characters were just so annoying and mean. I get that might be the point, but it didn’t sit right with me. And that ending? I get why she needed to find herself, but it just felt off and unnecessary. I’ll definitely just read this book once and then let it gather dust on my bookshelf forever. Honestly, I don’t think I’d recommend it to anyone. Okay, believe the hype, because this book is one ADDICTIVE THRILLER! Once I started it, I was hooked and I could not put it down. It’s fun, a little silly but is just full of pure entertainment value. It’s the kind of entertaining thriller that feels like you are watching a fun movie, complete with popcorn and a soft drink. ᗷOOK ᕼᗩᑌᒪ 📚 2 new reads showed up today and I couldn’t be more stoked for both! They’re clearly different genres and I am honestly telling you how much I love to get lost in both horror and historical fiction. And when those two go together, I’m even MORE stoked so I’ll always take any recommendations there. The first one, titled “The Reformatory,” by Tananarive Due, has been highly praised by readers and part of me might move it way up the TBR list simply for all the things folks are saying about it…I’m prone to making sudden list changes. The books don’t mind. The second book, an historical fiction novel called “Weyward,” by Emilia Hart sounds awesome for a rich depiction of a bygone era and an entangling narrative between related characters. 🌟 4/5 - The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo When I say that I DEVOURED this book. I could not put it down, the suspense of what would happen next, and the interaction between the characters, just, 👌. The perfect blend of history during the Spanish Inquisition and fantasy. I hear they revoke your Bookstagram membership if you don’t visit a bookstore on Indie Bookstore Day, so clearly I HAD to go book shopping today. Don’t blame me, Booksta made me crazy🎵 etc etc Anyway, I am wildly fortunate because I live by two fantastic indie bookstores. They receive so much of my money!!! Love that for them!!! If either of them ever go out of business, it will be the loss of my life. (Can you tell I’ve been listening to a lot of Taylor Swift?) @burkesbookstore and @novelmemphis are fabulous bookstores and if you ever find yourself in Memphis, definitely make time to visit them both. The top three books were FREE 😱 because they are old ARCs. I actually have Where You End as an eARC but always prefer a physical copy to read. The other two I’ve never heard of, but are both nonfiction and sound fascinating. In the bottom row: ✨Nickel Boys is a summer reading option for sophomores (AKA my current students) and I like being able to talk to them about what book they choose to read for the summer ✨I know nothing about In the Forest except that it’s a literary thriller, which is my bread and butter. ✨Via Negativa is another one I know nothing about, but the author lives in Memphis and the blurb on the back sounds so intriguing. Plus the bookseller told me he loved it AND that the author is a really great guy, so I’m feeling good about it. ✨The Best We Could Do is a graphic memoir AND it was on sale! Never heard of it, but just glancing through it sold me. #QOTD have you made any book purchases lately? What time of day do you read the most? - I mostly read in the day, which is weird because I’m a huge night person. In what form do you read books faster? - I read ebooks fastest. I know a lot of people read audiobooks fastest and I can’t relate to that at all. Let me count the ways.... 1) Owned in the community, for the community 2) A more personal and intimate vibe from staff 3) Supporting local businesses 4) A focus on local publishers, authors and creators 5) Each has its own unique story, layout, and selection 6) It feels like home And so many more.... I was blown away at the turnout at the Edmonton stores I visited (@audreysbooks @paperbirchbooks @weebookinn ), and wasn't even able to get a book passport because we started too late in the day. 😂 So happy to see that love for indie bookstores is alive and well; they're not going anywhere!
