All Souls Church is a diverse group of believers here in Knoxville and until recently had been growing their congregation in rented spaces. Their new, permanent space downtown needed some renovations to transform it into the worship environment they envisioned. We were able to partner with them to adapt the interior in a way that blends the ancient and contemporary. We created a museum-like architecture that can be changed with the liturgical calendar. By implementing elements, such as a floating gypsum board ceiling, vestibules, and double windows, we were able to create an environment that absorbs the road noise and vibrations from I-40, allowing them to gather and worship without distraction. When Arrowhead Church began to outgrow their leased space in Morristown, TN, they began searching for a new property. They wanted to create a uniquely branded campus and facility that would allow the church to grow and serve its community in a whole new capacity. Together, we helped them create a 28,000 square foot church with a 700 seat multi-purpose worship center, meeting rooms, nursery, children's worship space, and administrative space. In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting a project that we were so honored to be a part of. Clinton, Tennessee was the first town in the South to integrate an all white school in the Fall of 1956, ending years of racial inequality. African American students previously had attended Clinton Colored School, which was permanently closed in 1965 once segregation reached all grade levels. Over the years, the building was used as a daycare and a Head Start facility until it was closed again in 2002 and considered for demolition. However, the families of the Clinton 12 urged the city to turn it into a museum. And so the Green McAdoo Cultural Center went under construction and opened just in time for the 50th anniversary of the integration. Every detail involved finding a balance between opposing forces; black and white, separation and connection, story and history, old and new, tragedy and triumph. What began as a classroom addition, evolved into the real dream of creating a gathering space deep within the Arboretum. The design allows for 180 degree views of the surrounding landscape, creating a naturally beautiful environment for all meetings and events held within the space. Key Objective: Design and build a facility in the remote wooded area of the Arboretum, with minimum intrusion and provide a natural blend utilizing wood beams and local stone. Vision: Create a community gathering classroom, nestled deep within the Arboretum. Objective: Transform and renovate the out-of-date Thompson Boling Arena. Vision: Provide an intimate and world-class setting for attendees of all events at Thompson Boling. Challenge: Complete the project from beginning to end during the off-season as closing the venue for renovation was not a feasible option. Result: Extreme care was given to this project to ensure no delays, with all pre-construction and fabrication completed prior to the kickoff of the actual construction.
