Have you ever done that? Probably not - it would be silly. To get letters in the mail from someone you love, refuse to open them, and then wonder why you never hear from them anymore. Reading has never come easily for me. I was one of those kids in school who got bad anxiety on those weekly timed reading assessments. I had trouble with reading comprehension already, and it didn’t help with a timer ticking in the backdrop. Other students would flip their papers over quickly, signaling that they were finished, and I’d be searching back through the reading for answers to those five “simple” comprehension questions. I’d usually miss at least two of the five, which was the equivalent of a D. Goodness, if you missed one, it was a C! Reading my Bible as an adult is no easier for me, but I’m thankful God doesn’t give us a ticking timer and tell us how much we have to read in a given time frame. There will be days when I might focus on rereading just a few key verses. That’s what works for me and I’ve decided not to place myself under the stress of adhering to a rigid Bible reading schedule. God never says in His Word that we have to read an hour a day or that we must finish four chapters a day to read the Bible through in a year. (I did that two or three times, and I may have checked off the boxes, but I recalled very little!) For me, the best strategy for reading my Bible is quality over quantity! It’s how it works best for me to come to know my Savior. What works for you? The other day, I was writing out a prayer. Writing my prayers is a habit I’m trying to incorporate more into my routines. Writing things out has always helped me to process them better and engrave them on my heart. As I was writing, these are a few words that came to me: “Jesus, you gave me life by giving up yours.” WOW. Those words are really what the Christian life is all about. He saw MY sin. He saw MY brokenness. He saw MY mess. He saw MY pain and scars…. And he said: I came to die for THAT….ALL of that… He shed His own blood with an agonizing death on a cross to pay my debts in full. Through His death and resurrection, He also gave me a gift - entirely free - of eternal life by calling on His name. My life no longer is lost without hope. I know I’m alive for a beautiful purpose. How do you study the Bible? I think I’ve said it before, but there’s something about just summarizing verses during my Bible study time that helps me connect more with what I read. Most of the times, I just repeat what the verse is talking about, often without any real understanding of what it’s saying and the thoughts begin to flow. For me, it’s the most effective way to even have an inkling of what God is conveying through His Word. Of course, I always open with prayer that The Holy Spirit will illuminate the verses I’m about to read and give me understanding. And He can and will do that for you too. It requires patience. Many times I only read two to three verses because there is so much there. I’ve always been a quality over quantity person anyways. In homeschooling, in book reading, and in my writing life. Would I love to be able to write quality books in a shorter amount of time like so many of my friends do? Of course. But that’s just not how God sees fit to use me at this point. And I’m trying to embrace what the process gives me, which looks and feels slower than so many others. But I wouldn’t want to miss out on the blessings of what He is showing me at this slower pace either. I appreciate how many of you have commented on my devotional posts saying they’ve blessed you in some way. I pray that’s one way I can give God glory, because it’s all Him. I love and am SO THANKFUL for reviews (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!), even this one! And though I have to admit I was bummed it wasn't 5 stars, my dear husband reminded me that they titled it 'I LOVE THIS BOOK!' (Thank you 'romantic reader 01'!) They said they were worried about making sure they answered things correctly. I totally get this!! When I have done Bible studies (or any thing where I'm answering questions) where I wasn't sure of the answer, it bugged me because I wanted to get the answers all right! (Perfectionism much?) I wanted to share this for a few reasons: *criticism doesn't have to be negative, it can be helpful! (it might take a minute to see that; I know it did for me 😉) *it shows me I can do more to help others by sharing what I've learned about studying my Bible *it also shows me that I can look for ways make updates along the way in my Psalms journal to help readers in their study (if you have a suggestion, please let me know!) *it reminds me that studying God's word, for me, isn't just about learning MORE and adding knowledge (... like 'romantic reader 01' said, 'the focus on the psalms is worth it') I want it to be heart-and-life-changing not just for myself but others too! Becoming more like Jesus. So, here's my attempt at sharing some of the apps I use for reading, studying and listening to God's word. Have you ever thought about why Jesus lived a full life on Earth? 🕊️ He could have come, died, and resurrected in a few day’s time. Jesus didn’t have to come as a weak baby, grow as a child, and make friends as an adult. But He DID. He chose to create fellowship with His people, live life with them, and show them who He was by His action and ministry. For Jesus, ministry meant being *with* people. He embraced REAL LIFE with them and ate, drank, laughed, cried, and talked with them. We live in a time where being online can feel social and fulfilling in the moment, but often it leaves us depleted of real social interaction in the long run.
