This month, some great folks did a clean up at Chuck Swan State Forest, gathering up 15 bags of trash, plus some large items, including a gas grill, a camp chair, and a sofa. The clean up crew primarily included community members from the Friends of Sharps Chapel group, as well as Tennessee Division of Forestry and Tennessee Department of Agriculture Ag Crime Unit staff. The trash had been left by vandals in an historic area of Rodgers Mill Dam in the Lost Creek section of the forest. We're grateful for amazing community members who help keep our forests clean and beautiful! Rain didn’t stop members and visitors in our Huron-Perth Chapter from attending this weekend's workshop and annual general meeting, with close to 90 participating in the event! The day started with an informative tour at Matt Koch Hardwoods Inc. where he demonstrated his 40” wide horizontal band mill and 43” wide planner with sanding head. After this demonstration the group convened at the Sebringville Community Centre where they were entertained by the Canadian Raptor Conservancy. The group enjoyed learning about five birds, the Harris hawk, kestrel hawk, the eastern screech owl, the great horned owl and lastly, Coco Chanel, a19 year old bald eagle. After the Raptor session, everyone enjoyed an amazing hot lunch buffet.... Speakers of the day included Sionaid Eggett, OWA, Hannah Caan, Perth County Stewardship and Dave Pullen, Huron Stewardship. The Chapter then held its formal business meeting. Financials were read and passed and a new slate of officers were voted in. Thanks were expressed to Terry Hoover for volunteering, as his term was up as President and Provincial rep. The Chapter welcomed Dave Bray as its new President and Provincial rep. Worked for several hours to knock out a project (that we just haven’t had time for) - so I laid double cardboard and a thick layer of woodchips today in the back corner of our property - to protect our property from invasive plants on the neighboring property (thank goodness 30% vinegar kills back poison ivy 😡 and I wish it killed the garden ivy attached to our back fence and coming under/through that fence). This is the easement area of our property. We’ll use this area to stage garden supplies that we are repurposing on our property - old brick garden path, retaining wall stones, large pavers, flagstone, random rocks of various sizes, etc. and give us easy access to remove invading plants! As the semester comes to an end, we’re grateful for our interns 💚 Zoey and Isabella @lakeforestcollege ➡️ Zoey is a communications and environment science major with an emphasis on video communications junior. Zoey’s internship with the development team this semester has been invaluable–especially with creating a planned giving video and other special projects. Zoey grew up in a suburb of Denver and is a member of the LFC women’s hockey team. ➡️ Isabella has been a great help to the land stewardship team this spring. She has gained experience in burning brush piles, removing invasive species, processing and sowing native seeds, and has helped prep for prescribed burns. #MakingADifferenceMonday Free the Fern @free_the_fern has been stewarding the Champlain Heights Trail system in South East Vancouver since 2021. With the help of 980 event volunteers, they have organized or participated in 89 free community events, including invasive pulls, plantings, art workshops, walks, and festivals. Over the course of 3,948 volunteer hours, they have removed 215,272 L (76 tons) of invasive plants and planted 3,584 native plants. In 2021, In 2021 Free the Fern planted the Douglas Fir Teaching Garden and in 2023 they planted a Food Forest. They also organize an annual winter lantern festival, Light up the Night in Champlain Heights. Free the Fern invites you to join their monthly invasive pull, on the first Saturday of each month, 10am-12pm. All ages and abilities are welcome. Snacks and drinks provided. On Thursday students in our Coastal Ecosystems class noticed this turtle in a grassy area near the woods. It continues to move further into the woods. Friday Tony noticed that the same turtle decided to lay eggs along our trail/driveway. He called me over to take a look and observe. I took several photos and videos watching as the eggs were covered and the turtle left them. We positioned a couple of items to prevent drivers coming to the farm from disturbing the turtle eggs. Saturday it looked like something dug a hole in the same spot as the eggs.
