We went on a wonderful Segway tour of St. Petersburg, and one of the highlights was a visit to the Sunken Gardens. Here are some flora and fauna photos - for Segway shots, visit @doosamazingsegwaytours - my kids already gave *her* permission to post photos of them, but they'll be particular about me posting. Visiting the garden with a knowledgeable guide was a great way to experience an otherwise overwhelming diversity of plants!! #stpete #doosamazingsegwaytours #sunkengardens #sunkengardensstpete

Happy #WhatsBloomingWednesday! 🪻 If you’ve wandered past our koi pond recently, you may have noticed large blueish-purple flowers blooming along the banks. These stunning blooms with intricate petal patterns are Giant Apostles’ Irises (also known as Iris Neomarica caerulea ‘Regina’). Their flowers typically only last one day, but they will bloom multiple times during their blooming season. Giant Apostles’ Irises can grow to be 2-3 feet tall, and they thrive in areas of full sun to partial shade. #sunkengardens #sunkengardensstpete #botanicalgardens #giantapostlesiris #whatsblooming #tropicalparadise #florida #stpete

Did you know that Sunken Gardens has over 100 years of history? 😮🦩🌴 In 1911, George Turner Sr. and his wife Eula purchased 4.1 acres of land on the site of a sinkhole. Slowly but surely, they began transforming the property into their own tropical paradise. By the mid-1930s, visitors could pay 15 cents to wander around the Turner family’s ever-evolving garden of fruit trees and flowering plants. Come visit our History Center to learn more about the Turner family and Sunken Gardens’ incredible story! The History Center is located within our original 1940s entrance building, which was restored in 2022. 📸 1. Sunken Gardens History Center by Maria Flanagan 2. Happy #FlowerFriday! Under the shade of our old orchid arbor, several ornamental species are putting on a delicate show. 🌿 Indian Clock Vine is an evergreen vine that sports uniquely shaped flowers of deep red and yellow. This species (Thunbergia mysorensis) is not an orchid, but its intricate blooms are no less stunning. Below these hanging beauties, you’ll find some Nun’s orchids (Phaius grandifolius). These white and purple flowers are named for their resemblance to a nun’s habit. Nun’s orchid is a terrestrial species that will thrive when planted in the ground. Both of these plants are displayed only a short walk away from our Wedding Lawn, where vendors will set up for our Spring Plant Sale this Sunday, March 24. It’s #FlowerFriday, and our coral honeysuckle is looking as sweet as can be. 😊 Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is a Florida native vine that produces bright tubular flowers. Its coral-colored blooms attract butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds. Later in the year, when these blossoms transform into red berries, songbirds also flock to this vining plant. Whether you’re looking for a way to support Florida wildlife or searching for a bright addition to your landscape, coral honeysuckle is a fantastic alternative to invasive Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica). 📸: Jennifer Tyson #sunkengardens #sunkengardensstpete #floridanativeplants #floridanatives #honeysuckle #springflower #florida #botanicalgardens

Happy #WhatsBloomingWednesday! ✨ Chalice vine, also known as Cup of Gold, is currently blooming in our North Lawn. This flowering vine is native to Mexico and certain Central American countries. It is known for producing sizable buds that balloon out into large yellow flowers. Although these beautiful blooms are visually breathtaking, chalice vine as a whole is considered to be toxic. Got to take a stroll through the Sunken Gardens and all I can say is awww.... It is a little hidden gem not far from St. Pete Pier or the beach. Did not know when entering this garden that I would get to see a few animals including a separate one that asked us "What's up?". Listening and seeing the little group of flamingos was special and relaxing all at the same time. They played in the water and huddled in their little groups. Tourists in our own city today! What a perfect day to check out #sunkengardensstpete , established by plumber George Turner in 1911. How it started? Turner purchased the 4.1 acres that would later become a world-famous botanical attraction. Using an elaborate maze of clay tiles, he drained what was known as Curlew Pond, leaving a rich muck soil that was ideal for his favorite hobby – gardening. Neighbors so enjoyed strolling through Mr. Turner’s garden, that by the early 1930’s he was charging fifteen cents for tours. George’s wife, Mrs. Eula Turner shared her husbands’ love of plants and played a large role in establishing the gardens as a landmark. Their children and grandchildren continued the family vision and created this unique tropical garden with its flowing ponds. 🌿🌺 #SunkenGardens #botanicalhistory #thingstodoinsaintpete

Located in Pinellas County—the most densely populated county in Florida—Sunken Gardens represents one of many important green spaces in the area. 🌱 Green spaces provide a host of benefits for humans, but they can also serve as areas of refuge for wildlife. Even curated patches of vegetation like Sunken Gardens make it easier for different species to find shelter and food. Wading birds like the Great Egret pictured here are common visitors to the Gardens, and it’s always a special day when we get to watch them preen by the waterside or carefully walk down our historic paths as they hunt for Cuban brown anoles. Just as you would observe our resident tropical birds from a safe distance, we ask that all guests also respect wild visitors in the Gardens by giving them space to engage in their natural behaviors. 📸: Julia Calvert #sunkengardens #sunkengardensstpete #greategret #wildlifewednesday #stpete #florida

We’re so thrilled to welcome Buffett, our new keel-billed toucan, into the Sunken Gardens family. But did you know—Buffett isn’t the first toucan to call the Gardens home? 🌴 In the 1960s, the Turner family brought in a number of toucan species to the Gardens. Toucans were a fan-favorite among guests and staff alike, and they were featured in logos, guidebooks, and quirky celebrity photo-ops. Buffett’s presence in the Gardens breathes new life into a rich legacy. While he certainly evokes memories of Sunken Gardens’ technicolor past, Buffett also embodies one of our main missions: to provide a life of fulfillment to tropical birds while also educating the public about the importance of caring for these incredible animals. 🦜 Over the next few weeks, Buffett will spend his time behind the scenes where he will get acclimated to his new home and the Sunken Gardens animal care team. We look forward to introducing Buffett to guests in March. 📸: Sunken Gardens’ archive. A new feathered friend is soaring into Sunken Gardens... Meet Buffett! ❤️ We are very excited to announce that Buffett, a beautiful 5-year-old keel-billed toucan, will be the newest addition to our flock of resident tropical birds. Buffett is coming to us from Bark Life Market and More: a full-service market, boarding and grooming facility, with locations in St. Petersburg and Seminole. “We are so grateful to Bark Life and the Vasquez Family for donating Buffett to Sunken Gardens,” said Supervisor, Dwayne Biggs. “Buffett will be a great addition to our bird family and is a welcome element in preserving the history of our landmark roadside attraction. Additionally, he will serve as an ambassador for conservation of the declining species.” Keel-billed toucans (Ramphastos sulfuratus) are also known as sulfur-breasted or rainbow-billed toucans. They inhabit tropical and subtropical jungles and rainforests from southern Mexico to northern Colombia. Over the next few weeks, Buffett will spend his time behind the scenes where he will get acclimated to his new home and the Sunken Gardens animal care team. We look forward to introducing Buffett to guests in March. In the meantime, join us in giving a virtual warm welcome to the newest avian member of the Sunken Gardens family! @barklifeinc @barklifestpete #sunkengardens #sunkengardensstpete #animalcare #toucan #keelbilledtoucan

Check out this cutie on one of the only non-invasive lantana species in Florida. 🐝 Happy #FlowerFriday! Buttonsage (Lantana involucrata) smells like, well… sage. These tiny flowers bloom all year long, including winter. That’s great news for bees that are on the lookout for native blooms that haven’t gone dormant. It forms a pretty evergreen and drought tolerant shrub that is buzzing with life! To learn more about buttonsage, visit our IG stories for a fun video from the Florida Wildflower Foundation. 🌸 #sunkengardens #sunkengardensstpete #floridanativespecies #pollinators #floridawildflowers

Happy #WhatsBloomingWednesday! 🌴 Ti plant (referred to as kī in Hawai’i) is a tropical species that is native to parts of Asia, Australia, and several Pacific islands. This green, leafy specimen is considered to be a canoe plant in Hawai’i—it is one of many important plants that Polynesian settlers carried on their voyages and introduced to the islands centuries ago. For generations, Hawaiians have utilized many parts of the ti plant in every day life. Depending on how they are prepared, the roots of the ti plant can be served as a treat or turned into an alcoholic beverage called ʻōkolehao. Ti leaves are used in cooking as well as for ceremonial purposes, woven into clothing or footwear, and more.
