Local developer Stoneweg US is putting the finishing touches on a mixed-income apartment community situated east of Lake Maggiore in south St. Pete. The Lake Maggiore Apartments, located at 825 32nd Avenue South, feature 330 rental apartments, including 14 townhomes. The community, which is expected to fully open in August, will consist of seven garden-style apartment buildings, two townhome-style buildings, a pool, an outdoor amenity area, a clubhouse with a community room, and a leasing office. The project, which broke ground in 2022, was developed by Stoneweg US, a St. Pete-based investment firm specializing in multifamily development and acquisitions, and is the same group redeveloping Coquina Key Plaza. Today, several residential buildings are complete. During a property tour, Stoneweg Development Manager Denise Kelly told St. Pete Rising that the two-phased apartment project is more than 85% complete. Stoneweg allocated 20% (66 units) of the 330 units to workforce housing catering to households making between 80% to 120% of the Area Median Income (AMI). The smallest one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment is 620 square feet and is available for lease starting at $1,862 per month. Meanwhile, the largest unit is a 2,416-square-foot, three-bedroom townhome priced at $3,745 per month. The workforce units start at $1,433 per month. The units have luxury vinyl plank flooring, granite countertops, high ceilings, and energy-star rated stainless-steel appliances, including a washer and dryer. Residents will also have access to a fitness center and dog park with a wash station. Kelly said there will be a large community garden on the property with fruit trees, herbs, and vegetables for residents to enjoy. The garden will be used for programming to raise awareness about food sources and expose St Pete youth to opportunities in culinary arts, agriculture and food access. Stoneweg is partnering with St. Pete-based urban garden consultant, Desiree Sims, owner of Peas & Love Edible Gardening Co. and nonprofit Florida Food Policy Council on the design and management of the garden. โ€” Full story at link in bio

The Miramar Resort, built in 1953, was set to be completely demolished when the City of St. Pete Beach approved a $40 million redevelopment of the aging waterfront property in 2021; however, the owner is now scaling back those plans to save the 71-year-old buildings from the wrecking ball. As the sun was setting Tuesday evening, Miramar Resort owner Kevin Bowden walked around the hotel property at 4200 Gulf Boulevard, pointing out to residents and community stakeholders where a new seven-story 30-unit building will rise just behind the towering dunes shielding the resort. โ€œGuests want new beds and bathrooms, but want the resort to still have that same historic feeling,โ€ said Bowden, who also owns the Cambria Hotel on Madeira Beach. St. Petersburg architect Jack Bodziak and partner Britt Browne Hayes displayed new renderings revealing a nostalgic 1950s-inspired design for the new 30-unit building and motor court. This scaled back plan significantly differs from the original vision to construct a modern building and bring 54 new rooms to the property, which city commissioners approved in 2021 under the Mayor Al Johnsonโ€™s administration. Per the newly revised plans in a modified conditional use permit (CUP), the additional rooms would range from 400 to around 500 square feet and the hotel would feature a rooftop restaurant and bar. Unlike the Cambria Hotel, there will not be a rooftop pool, but rather a ground-level pool at the base of the building. The Miramar Resort has two existing pools that will be demolished to make way for the redevelopment. The property sits adjacent to a public beach access point, which will not be negatively affected by the construction, Bowden said, also noting how the project will not impact views from the neighboring resorts. The renovations will also bring the parking count to 50 spaces. Tuesdayโ€™s community meeting was the first step in the development process. Bowden expects the redevelopment plans to go before the planning board in a month, followed by two city commission meetings. If approved, construction may start mid-summer and wrap up within a year. โ€” Full story at link in bio

In mid-June, St. Pete Beach residents and visitors will be able to enjoy authentic, Brooklyn-made bagels with a tropical twist. Opening at 455 75th Avenue โ€” formerly the home of Sunrise Tacos, and before that, the venerable Gayleโ€™s Diner โ€” Tiki Bagel (@tikibagel) will serve bagels made by Noshmanโ€™s Bagel of New York City, a wholesaler that ships partially baked bagels to restaurants, delis, and bakeries around the country. According to the Noshmanโ€™s Bagel website, the company uses a recipe pioneered by Jewish immigrants that dates to the 1890s. โ€œWeโ€™re working directly with Noshmanโ€™s CEO Mark Halprin,โ€ Tiki Bagel owner P.J. Powell said in an interview with St. Pete Rising. โ€œAnd yeah, theyโ€™re going to partially bake them for us, ship them down, and then weโ€™ll finish them off here. Youโ€™re going to get a legit, fresh New York City bagel.โ€ Powell is targeting a June 15th grand opening for Tiki Bagel. In addition to bagels, the restaurant will serve avocado toast and a variety of breakfast sandwiches, as well as coffee provided by Tampa-based Elevation Coffee. Tiki Bagel will also feature a cereal bar for kids, which Powell expects to be popular with families visiting the area. โ€œKids will be able to serve themselves, and there will be interesting toppings that they can put on their cereal. Weโ€™re going to get them all amped up on sugar and send them to the beach,โ€ he said with a laugh. Tiki Bagel will be able to accommodate up to 60 guests. There will be indoor and outdoor bar seating, as well as surfboard-shaped community table, and booths inside. Also, local artist Leo Gomez (@leogomezstudio) has been hired to paint a mural on the side of the building. Eventually, Powell said, he would like to open a handful of additional company-owned Tiki Bagel locations and then begin franchising the concept. Tiki Bagel will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. It will be closed on Mondays. โ€” Full story at link in bio

The plump red cherry perched atop the awning of the dormant Dirty Shirley Bar + Kitchen will soon be removed as two local restaurant veterans will bring a new French bistro to the downtown St. Pete space. Christophe Guillot and Philippe Challeau, owners and operators of the upscale Bacchus Wine Bistro, will debut a new Parisian bistro and bar called COGNAC at 201 2nd Avenue North. Dirty Shirley closed their doors less than a year after opening in 2023. โ€œAt Bacchus, we are limited on what we serve and need a bigger kitchen where we can offer more dishes and serve larger private parties,โ€ Guillot said in a conversation with St. Pete Rising, explaining theyโ€™ve been seeking an adequate and efficient space for months. Executive Chef Louis DeBiase, who has worked at Bacchus since its opening, will be the โ€œheart and soulโ€ of COGNAC as he is spearheading the kitchen operations and menu. โ€œCOGNAC will be like walking into a bistro in Paris. People can enjoy traditional dishes such as steak frites, escargot, and different cognac selections.โ€ Guillot said they will also offer French pastries, croissants, and other delicious items. Unlike the nearby Bacchus Wine Bistro, which opened in 2019 and serves wines from around the world and imported cheeses, COGNAC will have a full liquor bar and the capacity to seat parties of up to 50 people. Broker Chris DiNeno, founder and operating principal at Main Street & Main, announced the sale of the restaurant business on Facebook, also congratulating the sellers, serial restaurant owner Renaud Cowez, Kahwa Coffee Roasting Co. founder Raphael Perrier, and Jeremy Duclut, executive chef at Cassis on Beach Drive and owner of The Wooden Rooster. COGNAC will be less than two blocks from Bacchus and is next door to the Sundial shopping and dining complex. When COGNAC opens this fall, it will serve brunch, lunch, and dinner every day. During the week, hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, on Saturdays and Sundays, the kitchen will stay open until 10 a.m., and the bar will operate until midnight. As for the future of the glistening giant cherry atop the building, Guillot said they will find a new home for it.

A vacant commercial space in St. Peteโ€™s Grand Central District will become a new high-end Italian market and dining hall. Julius Nasso, founder of The Big City Group and Big City Hospitality, has announced plans for the new concept, San Valentino Italian Market, which will debut later this year at 2063 1st Avenue South. The 12,082-square-foot building, located behind Trophy Fish seafood restaurant, was formerly occupied by Classic Architectural, a local cabinet and furniture fabricator. This will be Big City Hospitalityโ€™s first concept in downtown St. Pete. San Valentino Italian Market is expected to resemble a smaller version of Eataly, a popular chain of Italian marketplaces comprising a variety of restaurants, food and beverage counters, bakery, retail items, and cooking school. Further details regarding the new market and dining hall have not yet been announced. The plans for the brick-and-mortar storefront come after Nasso and his team recently vended at Mezzo Market, a monthly outdoor street market on Baum Avenue in the EDGE District between Intermezzo Coffee & Cocktails and Green Bench Brewing. Nasso revealed that San Valentino Italian Market is also a sponsor of the 19th Annual Sunscreen Film Festival, which takes place this weekend at the AMC Sundial 12 in downtown St. Pete. Prior to forming the hospitality group, Nasso had a robust career in real estate development, most recently serving as Senior Project Manager for Red Appleโ€™s 400 Central, a 46-story condominium tower currently under construction in downtown St. Pete. โ€” Full story at link in bio

Shiso Crispy (@shisocrispy), a food-truck-based Asian fusion eatery, is moving from Pinellas Park to St. Petersburgโ€™s EDGE District while simultaneously launching franchises in other cities and states. Owner and Head Chef Ronicca Whaley, in an interview with St. Pete Rising, said she will open this weekend at 1431 Central Avenue. There will be a soft opening on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a full opening on Saturday. โ€œIโ€™ve made this a really cool, vibey spot to go hang out and eat Shiso Crispy food,โ€ Whaley said. The space was previously occupied by a cheese shop operated by Brooklyn South and, before that, Gracie Pasta and Provisions. Shiso Crispyโ€™s new location will technically be a brick-and-mortar storefront, but instead of building a new kitchen from scratch, a food truck will be parked behind the building and will serve as the kitchen. โ€œMy customers have never had a nice place to go inside and sit down,โ€ Whaley said. โ€œAnd then weโ€™ll have the whole backyard, patio, and Booker Creek there.โ€ The menu, according to Whaley, wonโ€™t differ too much from the other Shiso Crispy food trucks that operate in Dunedin and Tampa. โ€œIโ€™m just going to have more dumplings,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™ll have boba tea, coffee drinks, and all sorts of refreshers, all kinds of different drinks.โ€ In addition to opening an EDGE District location, Whaley said Shiso Crispy, which launched in 2019, will soon expand to Miami and have a second Tampa food truck thanks to franchise agreements she recently signed. The business started out as a mobile food truck, traveling to different locations in the Tampa Bay area, before setting up a permanent location at Flying Boat Brewery (now set to become Outcast Brewing) in 2020. Whaley characterizes Shiso Cripsyโ€™s culinary style as โ€œAsian fusion street food โ€ฆ we do handmade dumplings, bao buns, and what weโ€™re really known for is our dirty rice dishes โ€” Bang-Bang Chicken is, by far, the best seller.โ€ Dirty rice, she explained, โ€œis sushi rice with a couple of our signature sauces on it, and then you top it with whatever protein that you choose. Then itโ€™s topped with fried onions, green onions, and sesame.โ€ โ€” Full story in bio

After St. Pete Beach commissioners delayed voting on TradeWindsโ€™ proposed expansion plans last week, the owners have finally won their approval. Following hours of debate that started Tuesday evening and bled into Wednesday morning, in a 3-2 vote, the commissioners narrowly approved a development agreement and conditional use permit (CUP). The approval comes with a list of conditions for the redevelopment of the 25-acre beachfront resort at 5500 Gulf Boulevard on St. Pete Beach. Commissioners Karen Marriott, Nick Filtz, and Richard Lorenzen voted in favor of the expansion plans. Mayor Adrian Petrila and Betty Rzewnicki cast the opposing votes. TradeWinds, which operates the Island Grand and RumFish Beach Resorts, currently has 967 hotel keys, and 102,373 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The four-phased expansion, which would take place over 20 years, will bring 629 new hotel rooms, 68,000 square feet of new restaurant and retail space across three new towers, and 2,113 parking spaces to the property. โ€œWe are thankful for the city commissionโ€™s support as we move forward with this transformative project,โ€ TradeWinds owner Joe Smith said in a prepared statement. โ€œWeโ€™ve worked extremely hard to keep St. Pete Beach residents top of mind in our planning, and weโ€™ll continue to do so as the expansion begins.โ€ A presented timeline shows construction would commence in 2025 and wrap up by 2043. However, Smith said a plan will be submitted to the city soon and construction for the first phase would take 12 to 18 months. This initial phase encompasses the construction of a 12-story 154-key hotel on the south side of the property facing the Seamark condominiums. It will have a two-story beachfront restaurant, a pool, and a six-story parking garage. Smith said he plans to stay committed to the project and community for the long haul. โ€œThere are no plans to sell TradeWinds,โ€ he told the commissioners in an earlier meeting. He said the team has spent $14 million altering the adjacent Alden property and $17 million rebuilding the food and beverage program. โ€œWe havenโ€™t stopped fixing the property since we bought it,โ€ Smith said.

Construction has begun on the Bayou Court Apartments, a new affordable housing development in south St. Pete. The new community is located near the southeast corner of Lake Maggiore at 4201 6th Street South. Gravel Road Partners, a Washington D.C.-based workforce and affordable housing developer, acquired the two-acre property in 2022 for $1.7 million. Bayou Court Apartments will feature three three-story buildings comprising 60 two-bedroom apartments, each spanning approximately 1,050 square feet. City and county leaders were on hand for a ceremonial groundbreaking, including St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch, Pinellas County Commissioner Rene Flowers, and St. Petersburg City Council members Deborah Figgs-Sanders and Gina Driscoll. โ€œAs a result of the impending housing crisis, Pinellas County sought to forge relationships with developers to create affordable units like Bayou Court. The future is made great when the County and surrounding municipalities combine their resources to work towards a common solution: safe, clean and affordable housing for our residents,โ€ said Pinellas County Commissioner Rene Flowers. Gravel Road Partners has pledged to prioritize applications from local municipal and public school employees. This initiative aligns with the proximity of Lakewood Elementary School, located directly north of the proposed apartment building. To facilitate the proposed density, the $17.3 million project will leverage the Cityโ€™s Workforce Housing Density Bonus Program and the State of Florida Graywater Density Bonus Program. Funding for the project includes a $2.7 million commitment from the City of St. Petersburg, an $8.6 million commercial bank construction loan, a $2.8 million contribution from Pinellas County, and $2.9 million in developer and investor equity. The Bayou Court Apartments development team, led by Gravel Road Partners, includes St. Pete-based Place Architecture, Park & Eleazor Construction, Osborn Civil Engineering, WGI Structural Engineering, and Carteret Property Management. Completion on the Bayou Court Apartments is expected in mid-2025. โ€” Full story at link in bio

An authentic Turkish restaurant serving chargrilled chicken kebap, fresh babaganoush, and slow-braised lamb shank is coming to Central Avenue this winter. Bosphorous, which refers to the body of water that lies in the center of Istanbul and connects Europe to Asia, will take over a portion of the ground floor of the former Furnish Me Vintage building across the street from Hawkers Asian Street Food. The building, located at 1246 Central Avenue, is part of a larger mixed-use development known as the EDGE Collective. Anchoring the project is a 163-key Moxy Hotel by Marriott, which is slated to open in June. The popular Turkish restaurant got its start in 2005 on Park Avenue in Winter Park, just outside of Orlando, and has expanded over the years to Lake Nona, Dr. Phillips, and Winter Garden. โ€œWe are very excited to be coming to St. Pete,โ€ said Owner Doved Sexter in a conversation with St. Pete Rising. โ€œWeโ€™ve been looking for a location in downtown St. Pete since 2019. We think we found the perfect spot and couldnโ€™t be more thrilled to be joining the EDGE District community.โ€ The lunch and dinner menu at Bosphorous contains traditional dishes from Central Anatolia. โ€œWe import around 85% of our ingredients from Turkey,โ€ said Doved, noting that Bosphorous is one of the biggest importers of Turkish goods in the United States. โ€œSome things you can buy in the United States, but a lot of things you cannot.โ€ On your first visit to Bosphorous in St. Pete, start the meal with an order of lavas (pronounced lah-vash), a Turkish pita bread that is perfect for dipping into hummus or muhammara, wrapped around a kebap, or eaten on its own. According to Doved, for lunch, diners love the Chicken Sis Kebap, which is hand-carved fresh chicken breast marinated in a special blend of unique seasonings and then chargrilled. The St. Pete outpost will be the largest location yet at 5,200 square feet. The interior has been designed using turquoise and yellow color tones accented with one-of-a-kind Turkish ebru paintings, silk carpets, and hanging Turkish mosaic lamps. Bosphorous is expected to open in St. Peteโ€™s EDGE District by the end of the year. โ€” Full story in bio

A local couple is flipping a 1926 bungalow in St. Peteโ€™s Grand Central District into a combined florist shop and wine bar. Drawing from his experiences working in Oregonโ€™s wine country and at St. Pete floral shops and breweries, Anthony Diaz and his fiancรฉe Carly Dauscher aspire to bring the same flare through a new venture. The couple has leased a 1,300-square-foot home at 2533 1st Avenue South in the Grand Central District. Pistil House (@pistilhouse) will focus on single stem cut flowers and offer imported wines, coffee, and small plates. The word โ€˜pistilโ€™ refers to the female reproductive part of a flower. โ€œThis whole concept struck us when we lived in Portland, which is known as the โ€˜City of Roses.โ€™ The city has amazing flowers growing everywhere,โ€ Diaz said to St. Pete Rising. โ€œThis will be our first business venture. We love the craftsmanship of the older bungalows versus having a traditional retail storefront.โ€ Diaz has a culinary degree and a brewing arts certificate. Guests will be able to craft their own colorful bouquets from a variety of available flowers. โ€œFlorida is limited in terms of the types of flowers that can grow here, but we want to procure local flowers as much as possible,โ€ Diaz said. In addition to wine and coffee, Pistil House will serve beer, wine, and champagne, as well as mimosas during a brunch service. As for food, Pistil House may offer pastries in the morning and will have a variety of charcuterie boards throughout the day. Diaz is making alterations to the space, including installing a large window at the front of the house. โ€œWe will take advantage of the front porch with outdoor seating. Inside, thereโ€™s a cozy fireplace that will be a major focal point and used for special events and holidays,โ€ Diaz said. The flower-prepping bar and to-go wine selection will be located in the rear of the home, where candles and other home goods will also be for sale. Pistil House is expected to debut this June. The operating hours are to be determined; however, Diaz said the bar will have limited evening hours. โ€” Full story at link in bio

The owners of Lolitaโ€™s Wine Market are reopening their former Grand Central District storefront with a new concept. Owners Alex and Kelly Rodriguez, who relocated Lolitaโ€™s from the 1700 block of Central Avenue last year to a space inside the Morean Center for Clay, will debut their new concept - Chefโ€™s Table by Lolitaโ€™s - at 16 18th Street South, according to a recent business filing. The original Lolitaโ€™s, which debuted in 2017, is known for its create-your-own charcuterie boards and small plates. The couple named the business after their rescue dog, Lola. In addition to the new concept, Lolitaโ€™s will continue to have a presence in the Warehouse Arts District at 420 22nd Street South. Further details regarding the new restaurant have not yet been announced. The new venture comes one year after the Rodriguezes moved out of their original building as the entire block was under contract with Dallas-based developer Trammell Crow. In 2022, the developer announced plans to build a seven-story mixed-use development that, if built, would replace the entire 1700 block of Central Avenue, including Lolitaโ€™s original building at 16 18th Street South. However, the group never closed on the property, and the development never came to fruition. Since then, the new retro-themed restaurant Neon Lunchbox signed a lease on the block, The Burg Bar and Grill announced it would remain, and the former Avid Brew Company space became available for lease. Other businesses occupying the block include the Dirty Laundry speakeasy, Fraze Design, FRSTeam by Rogers, and Hamm Signs. โ€” Full story at link in bio

After a nearly four-year stretch, Kahwa Coffee has opened its newest drive-thru coffee shop at 6601 Fourth Street North in St. Petersburg. The shop, which is built from repurposed shipping containers, was initially expected to debut in 2020; however, there were reportedly permitting issues and other headwinds. The new Fourth Street drive-thru offers Kahwaโ€™s full menu of pastries and sandwiches. While there isnโ€™t any indoor seating, there is a walk-up ordering window and some outdoor seating. The drive-thru cafe is open every day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kahwa uses 100% premium quality Arabica beans selected from various origins. Kahwa, founded in 2006 by the husband-and-wife team of Raphael and Sarah Perrier, has become the largest independent coffee roaster in the state. The home-grown companyโ€™s first cafe opened in downtown St. Pete that same year. In September 2022, the Kahwa team took another big step in its evolution with the launch of a franchising system. Last year, Kahwa opened its first South St. Pete storefront in Coquina Key. Today, the beloved St. Pete roaster has 15 retail locations and over 800 wholesale customers. Its wholesale products can be found in hotels, local restaurants, Publix locations throughout the Tampa Bay area, and in the new Whole Foods Market in St. Pete. โ€” Full story at link in bio

Vintage furniture, thrift finds, tarot card decks, and handmade jewelry curated by St. Pete artists have found a home inside a new marketplace. Cassie Mrotek, founder of ASTRA Aromatherapy, has opened ASTRA & Friends, an art consignment shop at 242 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North. The storefront was previously occupied by Central Oak Barber Co., which relocated two doors down to vegan grocer Black Radishโ€™s old space. โ€œI want to support all the people and friends I have met over the years and made me feel welcomed by helping them succeed with their art,โ€ said Mrotek, who held a soft opening for ASTRA & Friends on April 14th. โ€œMany artists canโ€™t manage overhead costs, and some couldnโ€™t continue to afford the increased rent for their brick-and-mortar stores. ASTRA & Friends allows them to still have that physical storefront presence.โ€ The new space is next door to Culture Shock, an oddity shop and tattoo studio, and Retrotiques, a shop that sells mid-century furniture and vintage toys. Mrotek, whoโ€™s friends with Central Oak Barber Co. owner Jai Parry, has kept the barbershopโ€™s mirrors and has listed the old decor for sale. The proceeds directly go to Parry. โ€œIโ€™ve been working towards this for four years, and I want to honor the people who were in this space before me,โ€ Mrotek said. Mrotek previously leased space in the Grand Central District, featuring artwork from only a handful of artists. The new space allows her to house goods and pieces from over a dozen creatives, including pieces from renowned St. Pete artist and muralist Chad Mize. The shop includes carved wooden bowls and Bohemian-styled furniture from Free Bear Vintage, illustrative art from Chain Assembly, and miniature succulents from Oโ€™Berryโ€™s Succulents. Artists can swap out and rotate their available products. The shelves are also stocked with Mrotekโ€™s self-care goods and essential oils, which she sells to wholesalers. ASTRA & Friends provides free product delivery within 15 miles of the shop. The store is open Monday and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Mrotek plans to host a grand opening in late May.

Construction crews are wrapping up the interior buildout for the 18-story Reflection condominium tower that overlooks Mirror Lake. Reaching a height of 200 feet at 777 3rd Avenue North in downtown St. Petersburg, Reflection is the tallest building in the Mirror Lake neighborhood and will have 88 condos and 2,800 square feet of retail space at completion. Local developer HP Capital, formed by partners Fred Hemmer, Angelo Cappelli, Nick Hansen, and Chris Hemmer, recently announced that condo sales for the luxury tower reached $65 million, including $5 million sold in the past two weeks. The team began site preparations in April 2022 and vertical construction commenced in February 2023. The tower topped out in September 2023. The first floor will have the residential lobby, retail space, and the entrance to the parking garage. Floor two through six will be dedicated to parking. Floors 7-17 will each house eight condo units ranging from 1,168 to 2,297 square feet. Pricing started in the $500,000s when sales launched in 2020. However, pricing for the remaining units now sits just below $800,000 with one unit priced north of $700,000. The team said four penthouses have sold. Pricing for the remaining penthouses starts at $2 million. The first residential move-ins will begin before July. KAST Construction will fully complete the tower by August. โ€œReflection will be the primary residence for many of our buyers. We are getting a good mix of locals relocating and out-of-region buyers,โ€ Hemmer said. โ€œThis is going to feel more like a neighborhood.โ€ The residences will feature dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, modern kitchens, terrace-style balconies, and state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances. There will also be Amazon lockers, including refrigerated lockers, controlled by smartphone technology. Additionally, there will be underground storage for residents. The 18th floor will feature a massive 12,000-square-foot rooftop oasis with a resort-style pool, a sauna, a spa, a fitness center, and views of the downtown skyline. HP Capital told St. Pete Rising there will be a rooftop bar or lounge exclusive to residents. โ€” Full story at link in bio

Introducing Historically St. Pete, a new monthly column on St. Pete Rising written by Rui Farias, Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History (@historystpete), which will cover everything from the legend of underground mobster tunnels to the buildings and people that created the Sunshine City. This month we explore the history of St. Petersburgโ€™s Carnegie Library at Mirror Lake, built in 1915 and still standing today. For more than 100 years, bibliophiles, researchers, and students have combed the bookshelves of the quaint Beaux-Arts style library located on the edge of Mirror Lake. St. Petersburgโ€™s Library Association formed a committee in 1908 to file an application with the Carnegie Corporation in New York for the funding of a public library, and then began lobbying Tallahassee for help. Although the Florida legislature passed an act in 1909 giving City Hall the right to levy a tax to maintain a public library, the effort stalled until City Councilmember Ralph Veillard reached out to Carnegie in 1912. The Carnegie group would make $12,500 available for a library in St. Pete. It was not enough. St Petersburg Times editor and publisher William L. Straub took matters into his own hands. Traveling to New York, Straub met with Carnegie executives and secured an additional $5,000, for a total of $17,500. In true St. Pete fashion, city leaders could not agree on a location. Some preferred the waterfront, finally agreeing on the edge of the city reservoir, now Mirror Lake, close to the cityโ€™s schools. With a crowd, including Florida Governor Park Trammel, looking on, the cornerstone was set on December 19, 1914. The Carnegie Library at Mirror Lake opened December 1, 1915, with 2,600 books. The Library and Municipal Advertising Commission was formed to oversee the new library. Straub was named President, while Annie McRae, an early promotional writer for the Board of Trade (Chamber of Commerce), Secretary. Of the 1,700 libraries funded by Carnegie, about 750, including Mirror Lake, still exist today. The Mirror Lake Carnegie library was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1986. โ€” Full story at link in bio

Husband and wife duo Som and Roger Rattanachane, who operate Pin on Cafe and Pin Wok & Bowl in downtown St. Pete, will soon bring their Asian fusion cuisines to the Grand Central District. Pin on Cafe, which debuted in 2021 at 1100 Central Avenue in the EDGE District, has been forced to find a new home as the existing location will be razed later this year for phase two of the EDGE Collective mixed-use development. Known for its delicious twists on traditional Thai and Japanese dishes, Pin on Cafe is expected to debut this August at 2458 Central Avenue, formerly home to Valhalla Bakery and Proper Meats. Valhalla recently consolidated operations into the neighboring Valkyrie Doughnuts space. Pin on Cafeโ€™s new Grand Central spot, which is over twice the size of its current location, will contain 2,452 square feet of indoor space and tons of outdoor seating along Central Avenue and in an expansive 700-square-foot backyard. The restaurant will be renamed Pin on Grand to reflect the location change. Pin on Grand will still serve fan favorites such as crispy duck ramen, pad thai, Panang curry, and chicken katsu, along with fresh sushi, sashimi, and more. However, the Rattanachanes have even more in store for the new location. โ€œWe are going to offer Thai pastries and desserts, boba teas, and specialty drinks with fruit from Asia,โ€ Som said to St. Pete Rising about the expanded menu for Pin on Grand. The pair are currently in the process of securing a permit to build a full-service liquor bar inside the space, which will operate until 10 or 11 p.m. Roger first got into the restaurant industry in 2011 when his family opened Sab Cafe, a Pan Asian restaurant, at 111 2nd Avenue NE in downtown St. Pete, where Som also worked. Som and Roger, who are respectively from Thailand and Laos, decided to strike out on their own in 2017 to open the Thai-sushi restaurant Pin Wok & Bowl at 445 Central Avenue in downtown St. Pete. After much success, the couple brought their Thai and Japanese cuisine to 1100 Central Avenue in the EDGE District with Pin on Cafe in 2021. Pin on Cafe will continue to serve customers in the EDGE District until Pin on Grand opens in August.
