About the Camino: The Camino is a bubble. A comunity of strangers who help and support each other regardless of everything. Everybody wants everybody to succeed. Your joy lifts me up. Things are fair. Then... Real life happens. There I was over an hour on the long queue inside the cathedral of Santigo to see the place where the body of San Tiago supposedly rests and I keep watching this group of people trying to jump the queue insistently while talking to each other about the holiness of the place. So you are religious and you are in a holy place about to worship a holy person and probably hoping to reach Heaven when the time comes but you are so selfish and have zero respect or consideration for anyone else but you. You are cheating in a cathedral! How wrong is that? Being a nurturer in the Camino is so easy it becomes second nature but it’s in real life the challenge rests. There. Rant done. About the Camino: In my last day walking I finally found out what these little houses are. They are everywhere in Galicia. They are called ‘hórreos’ and they are ancient granaries where the villagers would keep their grains away from rodents but these days they pretty much stand there empty and without a real use. Camino Day 22: 80% of the Camino in Spain goes through small towns and villages boosting the economies of these places, in fact some of these villages are not dead yet only because of the Camino which has thrown a life line to them. Some of the locals recognise this and really welcome the pilgrims’ presence and funny enough another group of the locals seems to resent this and treat us like a necessary evil which in my view is a bit unfair given the vast majority of the pilgrims really make an effort to be nice. The thing about these two distinctive bunches is we don’t know who is who until we talk to them then they either will treat you like a king or not even make eye contact with you. I am trying to take this opportunity to practise a very difficult art: ‘The not taking it personal’ art which will be very handy in my work since I work with customers. This art though is not easy to master. About Day 21: I cannot believe I’ve reached Santiago da Compostela in 21 days. I was not running. I walked when I wanted to and stopped when my body asked me to. It’s important to remember the Camino is not a race or a competition. You take the time you body and soul need and this is what matters. Having said that I literally just walked through Santiago. I didn’t want to spend time there for 2 reasons. First I will be coming back to spend some days there before I get my flight back to London and second it would feel like it was the end and that could potentially put me off my plans to continue walking to Finisterre where the Camino in fact ends. What an emotinal rollercoaster today was. So many feelings. So many thoughts. I wish I had the gift of writing so I could put all that mess which is in my head right now into words but I don’t have it. The proof of that is that I can’t even decide if that story would be a drama or a comedy... 😂😂😂 The Camino made me realise some emotional wounds we carry within us can be just like the blisters we may acquire in the pilgrimage. They will annoy you and remind you they are there until you do something about. If we want them properly healed we must pierce through them and let whatever is inside run loose. Some deep emotional wounds I even forgot they existed were pierced during the Camino and that was a blessing. Whatever was inside is no longer there and these wounds will be just fine in time. Enough of drama for today. I need a good night sleep because the Camino is not over yet. So for now I bid you good night sharing with you the moment I set eyes on the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela for the very first time... Camino Day 20: I agree with my guide book: The biggest challenge for someone who started the Camino from the beginning is being understanding towards the last 100 km crowd. Camino Day 19: This is the ruins of one of the first hostels (Refugios) ever built to accomodate the pilgrims in the Camino. It’s essential to remember the Camino is not a trend. It’s been changing people’s lives for over a millennium. It’s important to know it’s been originally established for religious purposes. You don’t have to be religious or believe in a specific thing to walk the Camino but you must respect its history. Treating it as a hiking party is disrespecful not only to the other pilgrims but mainly to the locals. About Day 14: I walked 38km today and again stopped because of the overwhelming Spanish Summer heat. I am in this lovely town called Hospital de Órbigos in an arty hostel called San Miguel with a very interesting bunch of people including this crazy Dutch girl with whom I walked half of my day. She’s so crazy and reminds me so much of the German singer Nina Hagen but I won’t tell her that. It’s been 2 weeks I’ve started walking and I’ve been meeting so many people who are walking the Camino for therapeutic reasons (including myself) and none of them are disappointed so far. For all of us the Camino definetely lives up to its hype. But don’t believe us simply! The writer John Brierley for instance defends modern pilgrimage as a genuine and efficient drug free method to treat some mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and some phobias to name just a few. I am no expert but based on my experience only I can confidently say a week of Camino has done more for me than 3 years of therapy and happy pills put together. Once I’m back home I will be more than happy to help anybody who might be considering do the Camino. I really think everyone should do it at least once in Life. I am finishing my 2nd week and I know for a fact I will be back. And I finally bid you good night with some more of the Camino’s wise words. Night! Camino Day 13: I found out there are 2 reasons the Camino is so popular with the South Koreans. There have been in recent years two TV reality shows in that country set in the Camino and the 2nd reason is most universities in South Korea accept the certificate one finished the Camino as credit towards their diploma which is quite interesting actually. About Day 11: I walked 44km. Walking up at 4am has been great. I walked 20km even before the sun was out. The temperature was just perfect. The great thing about having a faster than average pace is that I get to know different groups of people at every other day and I am really appreciating this. When I started I was wondering if I would have time to make it to the sea but the way things are going I will be able to walk to the sea after Santiago and still have 1 or 2 days to lazy about. Summary of Day 9: I walked 40 kilometres. Sorry Castilla y Leon but there was another long section of the Camino by the motorway and it’s just not pleasant. I fear this is what I will remember the most from this region. Today we had 35c and the whole weekend is forecast for 37c peaking at 39c on Monday. It’s actually very bad news. If we want to make some progress in these hot days we have to wake up max 5am because by 11am the sun is too strong and the ones who venture to keep walking after noon will likely be responsible for the future new crosses by the camino. 😬😬😬 It feels that hot! I am staying in another church run hostel tonight. They really make us feel like home... Like we are part of a big family although we all have just met. It’s really inspiring. And the food and wine are always great too. By doing the Camino we get really used to the silence and peace from the countryside and the woods then we have to cross a big city like Burgos...
