Day twenty eight, Santiago day two, day three hundred sixty six of my thirty nine (thanks for the extra day, leap year!) Marta landed at 7:30am so the tradition of not sleeping enough on Camino continued. We had a long breakfast with some tarta de Santiago, a local specialty almond cake. We wanted to go to the Sunday mass in the cathedral at noon and queued for it, but right before getting in we got turned down (or ‘we kissed the doorknob’ as we say in Polish), as the church was full. We went for a free walking tour of Santiago instead and returned to the cathedral later to visit the sepulchre of apostole Santiago and give what is called a ‘pilgrim’s hug’ to his statue. During the tour we learnt that today’s Camino popularity rose only in the eighties and was promoted thanks to the money of the most thieving of the local businesses: drug trafficking (Galician ports were its point of entry to Europe). Before the boom, only about a thousand people a year made the pilgrimage to Santiago. Now it’s five hundred thousand a year! (And they say drugs are bad… Santiago might disagree!) After the tour, we had a great lunch consisting of Galician octopus, all kind of meats, Galician bread (that resembles Polish bread I love so very much), and some local mencía wine. We checked into our hotel where we had a siesta. Relax, rest, and celebration. I’m a new woman, I’m telling you! We went for a walk and remembered that we were supposed to message our Camino friend José Antonio to whom we serendipitously run into in almost every albergue we stayed in since Zamora. And as we said that, we run serendipitously into José Antonio in Santiago. We did see a café called Serendipidia a bit earlier, so a serendipitous encounter was due. Continued in comments

Camino de Finisterre Day 25 ***** Finally the weather improved enough to do the playing and breastfeeding stops outside and give our baby the freedom he needs. It's also easier for us to put the blanket on the stones or grass and not worry about the edges of a bar table. We continued walking from Negreira although we still don't feel ok. Walked 13km and reached the village of Vilaserio where we booked 2 nights. It's the first time we're taking a day off. In this state we wouldn't manage walking in the rain. This gives us time to physically and mentally prepare for some rainy days that are coming. We decided to stay for two nights at the private albergue Casa Vella. With high expectations we arrived, admiring the beautiful old country house run by two caring older ladies with the spirit of the camino. The problem with being weak and stopping to walk is that you get cold very quickly. To our surprise, the shower wasn't warm. We were told the hot water broke down that day. That was really bad news. The one thing our mind was hanging on. Plus we planned to shower the baby as there were shower heads with adjustable temperature. The temperature in the late afternoon inside and outside was the same, about 11°C, which is not as cold as our experience in Foncebadon, but believe we felt it. Even here, close to the end of the world, an expert came to fix the boiler before going to sleep. Our hopes for the next day were high up again. Well that nearly took the 'buen' out of the usual 'buen Camino'. That was hard, hard (insert appropriate expletive) hard! 20 km fairly flat with a last 8 km of unrelenting up in rain, mud and wind. Day twenty seven, Ponte Ulla to Santiago de Compostela, 21km, plus 7km around town. End of Camino. Or rather: end of walking. Now the true ‘journey’ starts. We made a stop in Albergue Reina Lupa where over a yer go I met the owner, lovely Carmiña, when I was walking Camino de Invierno. Oh what joy to see her again in person! The weather forecast for the weekend was three days of rain, but around noon the sun came up and it stayed that way. Thank you to whoever ordered it for me! They put a finish line for a bicycle ride right in the middle of the Obradoiro Square which was quite funny to cross and quite original for the final photos (original or annoying, you tell me). What else didn’t go according to “the plan”? My phone camera got steamed up and I couldn’t take photos. Also, we couldn’t find anywhere to stay, all hostels and hotels were sold out, because apart from over two thousand pilgrims arriving on the day, there was the race, plus usual weekend tourists. There was one house available in the forest twenty five minutes away from the centre, which was doable but not ideal. When we went to the Pilgrim’s Office to get our certificates of completion, one room in a great hotel for a very reasonable price next to the cathedral showed up on Booking, so we booked it right away, and couldn’t believe our luck. I don’t know why really - with how lucky I always am I should have got used it by now. But I think getting surprised about it is part of the joy of it, so maybe better not to. Speaking of surprises, my best friend from Barcelona, Marta, is coming to Santiago to celebrate with me the Camino and my birthday. But that’s not luck. That’s love. Blue skies. Red wine. Red back spider and losing my way on The Way “Blue skies, smiling at me. Nothing but blue skies from now on....” We prefer the optimistic Willie Nelson to the pessimistic Professor Higgins and his “rain in Spain.” A chilly morning though. 2 degrees when we left, but after a brisk walk and a hot coffee, we soon warmed up. After a few kms, we found the fountain of youth. Our wayward son had walked the Camino a few years earlier and regaled us with stories of free red wine flowing from taps on the trail. We had always put it down to wishful thinking on his part until we came across a very elaborate fountain of youth spewing out red wine. I quickly emptied my water bottle intending to top up, however after a couple of swigs, I thought I would be the fountain spewing out red wine. Those other trekkers with lesser fussy palates were soon queuing up for their fill, patiently waiting for Wendy.... Ok. I’ve covered the blue skies and red wine. But a red back spider in Spain? A large steelwork shop was nearby selling all things metal Camino pendants. Door handles. Horse shoes, hooks etc. On one dusty shelf we came across a steel/wire spider. No price tag. The artist said he had made it just for fun not expecting to sell it. However upon learning we were from Australia where we advised him these arachnids were simply everywhere, he was pleased to offer it to us at a bargain price. The remainder of the walk was simply stunning. In the distance, rows of small villages flanked by an exposed stone escarpment reminiscent of the Blue Mountains. Just 20km brought us to the small town of Los Arcos. It has been just one week since completing the Nantes marathon so I am due for a recovery run. I found a simple 12km loop on the Strava app but on closer examination, I saw a faint dotted line I could follow to reduce the run to around 8km. Off I went on my merry way. The wide gravel path soon shrank to a narrow trail covered mostly in rocks and weeds. A goat track the goats avoided. Stunning views however. I soon realised the town wasn’t where it was supposed to be so clambered up a steep hill to get my bearings. Had well and truly lost my way on “The Way.”

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.....and us! Damn you and your forecast Professor Higgins. We hoped the snow would stop. It did. Instead it bucketed down raining. What the heck! How about lightning and hailstones while you’re at it Professor! Okay. Enough! Our walk today? Rolling hills. Ancient stone walls adorning the well worn path. Stone bridges with arches. Churches with bells. Spring colours. Red, yellow, white and blue flowers. Green crops. Rainbows. Ploughed brown fields. Black tar roads.....Hang on? Tar roads.....You probably thought the ancient trail of the Way of St James would be 800km of cobblestones worn smooth by pilgrims leather sandals and colourful Hoka trail shoes. Noooo indeed. Instead it is a real mixture. The surface ranges from concrete footpaths, asphalt roads, rocky trails, sand, cobblestones and today, puddles of water intersected by mud and bogs of quicksand. The width varies from 4-5 metres wide to a single trail which disrupts those on mountain bikes trying to squeeze past. Unless the bikers ring their bells, call out, or send me an email, they can wait until I find an appropriate place for me to let them past. (I pretend not to notice them for at least 20 metres at which point I give them a startled look.) At each village, we search for a well deserved coffee. Many times we are disappointed. It is actually easier to buy a beer or wine than a cafe con leche. (Latte??) And after lunch or morning tea, the people of Spain seem to disappear. Gone. All doors and shops shut. Feels like a Covid shutdown. Siesta seems to be a real thing. Except for us lowly Peregrinos who must push on. Arriving too late into a village without a booking is always a worry. Many Albergues (pilgrim hostels) fill quickly adding to Spains homeless. So far, we haven’t been troubled. Technology abounds on the trail. E-sims. Camino apps. WhatsApp. Google maps. Google translate. Many challenges experienced by earlier pilgrims have now all but disappeared. We promise ourselves to forgo this technology and try out our luck the old way. I will retain my magic finger though which just ordered me a very large Cerveza for a miserly 3.5 euros.

Camino Frances Day 22 ***** Baby made it to Santiago:) And even got the Compostela certificate for infants! It took us 22 days to walk the official 315 km from Leon to Santiago, carrying our baby in a baby carrier and sleeping in albergues with other pilgrims. We're thankful we've had the time and strength to do this. We're thankful that our baby is a ball of joy, is growing well and seeks connection with everybody. He's been the best companion to both of us. We're thankful that we have him and each other. We made it in spite of shoulder pain, sleepless nights, low temperatures, unsticking shoes and feeling sick. Seeing our baby laugh, discover the world and flirt with the people of the camino has overshadowed all the struggle. It felt very good to unpack our colourful baby blanket on the square in front of the cathedral and savour the arrival. Baby even sat stable for the first time. He is almost 8 months now. It also felt good to attend the mass in the cathedral. Baby loved the sound of the organ and the crowd, got excited and tested the acoustics by 'speaking' louder than the priest for a while. For sure, we would do this again and would recommend walking with a baby to Santiago to anyone who's considering. Given the time we have, we could have started in Burgos. But we don't mind. This decision brought some special people into our way. And we can always come back. Bulls and Bumble Bees One challenge in a foreign country is communicating with the locals. (Actually, I have this problem in Australia as well). In this case, speaking Spanish. I studied it briefly and can confidently order essentials. “Un Cerveza por favour Amigo.” Works every time. And I practice every day. So how does this now work out in downtown Spain? Think of the communication between Basil Fawlty and Manuel. Apart from my practiced, singular, linguistic skill, I get by. However I have a magic finger. When confronted with a wide array of sweets, beers, tapas and other gastronomic delights at the bar, I simply wave my magic finger and life is good. Trouble is, the finger gets out of hand. For lunch yesterday, cheese cake, carrot cake, some kind of sandwich with eel, a coffee and finally, a leg of duck with makes a lamb shank look utterly miserable. Later that night at a packed bar, the finger pointed at the big glass for a beer. The finger chose two scallop shells crammed with some kind of seafood chowder. Then the other fingers joined in and it got messy. Our early night, early rise plan disintegrated. I ran with the bulls. Wendy gave me her finger. So the next day, though short in distance, it was surprisingly long. No rain. No snow. And when the sun came out, it was actually quite warm. Until you take off your jacket and jumper and the temperature drops once more. The trail today was very significant. Apart from several villages adorned with obligatory churches and their soaring bell towers, the path was lined with brilliant red poppies. Anzac Day. Actually, not sure of the exact dates with Australian time zones etc. Not even sure what day of the week it is. Seriously. Our lives currently on a village to village schedule. Today. Tomorrow and yesterday. That’s it. Currently resting in the Aloa Bar in downtown Puente la Reina where the barmaid proudly assures us the vino is locally produced.
