Image 1: The best striped robe in one of the Gideon’s Image 2: Look at the way the weavers created water bubbles in the water by leaving tiny little gaps like mini slits! Image 3: Amazing chainmail detail. Image 4: Such a gorgeous bearded face and curling hair image 5: Neptune’s sea dogs/sea lions/sea creatures with fabulous whiskers and teeth! Image 6: The best sea horses ……. Image 7: ……and the best lions with portrait-like faces Image 8: View of one of the Alexander’s (I think?) Image 9: It’s not going to end well for this poor wild boar! Image 10: I love those tapestry draped views through from room to room. It’s a long time since I’ve been to Hardwick, one of my favourite houses, so this was a very welcome, overdue visit. Everything is now looking so well cared for especially the textiles. Focussing in this post on the tapestries, the amazing Gideon tapestry series is finally fully conserved and all are back up after 24 years work and looking stupendous (details 1&2). Really beautiful work @nttextileconservation - huge congratulations to all the conservators involved at the studio over the decades, to the property and to the region and the wider @nationaltrust What an incredible achievement - do go and see for yourselves, the images cannot do justice to the scale as well as the detail involved. It’s a triptych designed by the artist Christine Borland and woven by the entire team of talented weavers @dovecotstudios in Edinburgh. It represents three wrapping textiles used in medicine, using plant cells as decoration, and it commemorates the Edinburgh 7. They were the first women anywhere in Britain to matriculate at a University. They all began their medical studies at a Edinburgh in 1869 led by the extraordinary Sophie Jex Blake (last slide). They were treat appallingly- the students rioted against their presence, Sophia was sued for slander by one of the professors, they needed guards to get to their lectures, they were reviled in every way and yet they succeeded in becoming doctors and during their lives treated thousands of poor and I’ll women. This tapestry commemorates them at a University where more than half the medical students are now women. On Friends of Haptic and Hue, out on Thursday this week, you can hear Celia Joicey, the Director of Dovecot, talking about how this was made and what it means. To be clear, these were not rugs and furniture Garbo owned but ones from her period which she might have owned . Are you still with me? The fact that she liked rosy tones and lived in New York was the thin premise for this show of extremely beautiful Swedish objects. I was happy to have a chance to see them and was willing to play along with this fantasy, however odd, although I’m afraid Garbo herself might have been appalled! So— interesting pieces were a lucious red-orange half pile (halvflossa) rug by Elsa Gullberg. This was her “Chinese rug” from the mid 1930s, produced in a number of colors including gold and green. The next rug is by an unidentified maker working in an extraordinary format: a kind of mix of the traditional woven rag rug (trasmatta) with hand knotted tufts of pile, framed by an overall red grid made of horizontal red lines of weft and vertical warp lines carried like rick-rack — please! you weavers out there, help me with the correct terms for this!— .The next is a tapestry by Ingegerd Torhamn who showed a number of her cubist- influenced tapestries/rugs at the 1925 Stockholm Fair, and then a rare chest of drawers also decorated by Torehamn. Of course in the backdrop here is a blown up version of Josef Frank’s 1940s Barranquilla fabric for Svenskt Tenn. The garments, textiles, and contextual objects from Syria are absolute treasures. Also fabulous are CAD and photomicrogaphy detail images and illustrations from the conservation research and digital preservation for two 3rd-century Dura-Europos fragments by Martina Ferrari and Janina Poskrobko from the Met’s Department of Textile Conservation…I loved seeing this project presented in the galleries with the weavings (Yale University Art Gallery, 1933.488 and 1933.486A).
