This year, BxArts Factory wants to create the biggest Block pARTy yet! Our goal is to support 10 local artists with a stipend for their participation in our Block pARTy. Artists and volunteers will engage community members in activities such as live painting, face painting, music and arts and crafts. We are also partnering with other Bronx organizations like Bronx Bound Books, Bronx Sole, Bronx Femme Run, Her Village, etc., to bring artists and community together in a day filled with creativity and movement. Since 2019, the Melrose community has been our home. During our first block party that same year, we provided financial support to seven artists to activate the block with live painting. The event also incorporated other creative activities sponsored by local community organizations and businesses. For example, Bronx Bound Books participated with a wonderful book give-away and Bronx Sole brought in Double Dutch. We had a spoken word open mic and many other activities celebrating art and community. In 2020, we coordinated a virtual block party to stay connected to our friends and neighbors and in 2022, we hosted a small, in-person event to help our community emerge from the pandemic. This year, we are ready for a comeback! We want to gather on a larger scale to celebrate our neighborhood and welcome locals to our space once again. We are all fighting against all odds through out life, and in the graffiti and art world where we all share a common space and purpose. We all want to leave our mark on society and send out a message for what we stand for and how we want to be remembered, some of us do it through graffiti, murals, letters or imagery, we have all at some point used the streets as our medium leaving our mark on buildings, walls, trains etc. We all have a void to fill, and we do it in many different ways but we all share a common platform. Flashback Issue 11 1996 Burners by @ces4wish One of the most important graffiti zines of our lifetime. Before social media this is how you knew who was gritty and grimey. Putting this together back in the golden era took alot of work. Making a zine isn't cheap. Getting the right flicks, waiting for them to get developed, picking the right fonts, cutting and pasting, editing, selling ad space, deadlines, etc. This shit is a lost art form. As many peaceful protesters/organizations from the Bronx marched peacefully from Roberto Clemente Plaza down to Brook Ave they were met with brute force by the NYPD. They were corralled like cattle, streets blocked off, Subways blocked off as they marched peacefully and were met with batons, fist and shields at 8 p.m. They were pounced on as soon as curfew time hit. Community residents were not allowed to enter their projects or leave as they were met by a blue line, pregnant woman and Elders were shoved, our youth were arrested and abused, tear gas, clubbing and no regard for Humanity was displayed by many of the people that look just like you and I. This morning I got the news that my favorite Pizzaiolo and neighborhood buddy Joe Chiodi, owner of John & Joe's Pizza on Lydig passed away last night. For those in the Bronx we take our pizza very seriously with many gems scattered throughout the borough from north to south and east to west. We take great pride in our pizza just like our chopped Cheese's and the New York Yankees. John & Joe's is one of those last mom and pop classic countertop shops. The type of shop these hipster places try to mimic and recreate. Joe was the last of his kind. One of the remaining Italian stallion's of Bronx Park East and Pelham Pakrway. He was charming, respectable, funny as hell, compassionate, loving and a definite ball buster. For over 37 years he not only tossed pies, he provided us all with love, guidance, a place to shoot the shit, to get some comedy relief, history lessons, he fed children and families and never turned anyone away even if they were a dollar short. When I decided to become vegan I binged on his pies and told him I would miss his pizza. He said no worries Bella, I got the marinara focaccia for you. Joe claims he invented the garlic knots! Who could beat 10 knots for $1especially when that is all you have. I believed him and always will. Joe saw past race and color and treated every paisan, hermano and stranger with RESPECT. That's all you needed in life he would say. If you respected people they will love you. I will miss him and his Ciao bellas. The Bronx and the NYC Pizza community lost a true one. Woke up to find out our gates on Virginia Ave were bombed by some TOYS. @lovingthebronx along with the owners of the 24 hour deli gave me and @bigeyesworld the opportunity to beautify the neighborhood with some of our art. The owners of the store even caught these little rascals and confronted these white boys as they claim they were. 😂 I know how the game goes and sometimes its expected but I've never heard of these fools before and at least if you gonna be doing some s*** do some nice s*** some clean fills, clean lines not some dusty s***.
