Meet guitarist and composer Lee Barbour. Lee Barbour is a musician from Charleston, SC. As a guitarist, he has performed and recorded with international artists, including guitar legend Joe Beck (Miles Davis), Fred Wesley (James Brown), Earl, and more. He has been reviewed in Jazz Times and had appearances in Spin Magazine and the New York Times. As a composer, he has written music for trailers, documentaries, animation, commercials and feature film. He performs regularly with several different projects and tours with Jazz is Phish. And if you didn’t grow up here or live in a place where this kind of stuff happens all of the time then you probably don’t realize how big of a deal this is. But I guess that’s one of the perks of being Poet Laureate—you have the opportunity to open doors that were previously closed to you and your kind. Like, Samira legit played Tribe Called Quest jams and Marcus wrote about how Angel Oak was used to hang slaves and now it’s a “beautiful” tourist attraction and Asiah said a poem about seasonal depression and Willie did a poem about a lover named “Kyle” and Gina Mocha recited poems about black power. And there was free wine and good vibes and finger snapping and tears and laughter and references to Prince (of Minnesota) and I was just so happy to be in the room. At Gibbes. This was monumental.
