The ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Pakistan cricket team's coaching finally came to an end after Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday announced South Africa's Gary Kirsten and Australia's Jason Gillespie as the coaches for the men's side. Speaking at a press-conference in Lahore, Naqvi said that the board is bringing in Kirsten as as the national side's white-ball coach while Gillespie is being given the role of the team's red-ball coach. Furthermore, former cricketer Azhar Mahmood, who was appointed by the PCB as the team's head coach for the recently concluded T20I series against the New Zealand, will assume responsibilities as assistant coach for both formats, Naqvi added. The coaches' appointment, as per the PCB chief, is for a period of two years. The development comes after the said posts were left vacant after Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn and Andrew Puttick were transferred to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore after a change in their portfolios in November 2023 following a change in PCB setup. The trio left their respective positions in January this year. Commenting on the timeline when the new coaches will join the team, the PCB chairman revealed that Kirsten would join the Green Shirts on the England tour, whereas Gillespie will join the team in the Bangladesh series. Responding to a question as to why the board doesn't prefer local coaches due to the language barrier, Naqvi said that if a player did not know English, he would learn it and that purpose of bringing foreign coaches is to improve the team. #TheNews

"This life, so ephemeral, does not seem sufficient to appreciate the beauty captured by artistic minds. Even mundane and dull things appear attractive when expressed through the poets’ words. Poets perceive what others are sometime unable to see. Moreover, they are adept at creating extraordinary things out of fairly ordinary ones and vice versa. In her poem A Portrait on the Wall, Humaira compares the figure in the painting to the sun, creating the impression that the figure has the capacity to illuminate the lives of people and chase away their grief. Sometimes, it is the love in the heart of the beholder that makes the object look fantastic. Other times, the object is truly fascinating and the praise is apt." Internet services faced disruption after the South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE-5) underwater cable connecting Singapore to Pakistan and Europe was cut, Geo News reported Saturday citing sources in the telecom sector. However, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) denied any disruption, stating that the submarine cable cut has not affected its traffic. "PTCL's traffic is not affected due to submarine cable cut," the PTCL spokesperson told the TV channel. According to the telecommunication company, internet traffic in Pakistan was normal and remained unaffected following the cut because the cable is not part of PTCL's network infrastructure. The spokesperson added that PTCL's network is functioning optimally with "no service interruption". The sources within the industry told Geo News that they have noted packet drops as well as slow browsing and streaming since Monday (April 22). The issue, as per the sources, has been linked to the underwater cable which was cut near Indonesia. #TheNews

One in five commercial milk samples tested in a nationwide survey contained particles of the H5N1 virus, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said late on Thursday, suggesting the outbreak of bird flu is more widespread than previously thought. The agency said there is no reason to believe the virus found in milk poses a risk to human health. “This says this virus has largely saturated dairy cattle throughout the country,” said Dr. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota. Many infectious disease experts and government officials have said they believe the pasteurization process will inactivate the virus, also known as avian influenza. However, additional testing is needed to confirm that there is no infectious virus in the milk, the agency said. #TheNews

In a bid to overcome the massive tax frauds of trillions in General Sales Tax (GST) on an annual basis, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan to introduce the General Anti-Avoidance Rule (GAAR) by amending Sales Tax Act 1990. This might become one of the major conditions of the upcoming IMF sponsored bailout package under Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for which both Pakistan and the Washington-based lender’s teams are expected to engage from the second week of May 2024. The IMF has recommended that the Sales Tax Act (STA) could be amended to preclude a business from claiming input tax on purchases that the business knew or should have known to be part of a “missing trader fraud arrangement”. “This encourages businesses down the supply chain to take reasonable steps to ensure that a supply is not part of such an arrangement before claiming input tax to avoid penalties or prosecution,” it added. Independent tax experts presented some rough estimates suggesting that the fake/ flying invoices (tax frauds) in Sales Tax runs into trillions of rupees ranging up to Rs3 trillion on annual basis, so the input adjustments claim for refunds requires a major overhauling. The IMF has conveyed to Pakistan through Technical Assistance (TA) report that missing trader fraud arrangements defraud the government of sales tax. It involves a supplier (missing trader) deliberately failing to account for the sales tax charged on such supplies made by the supplier, while businesses along the supply chain continue to claim input tax or sales tax refund from the tax authorities. #TheNews

This week has been eventful. It can seem like the world is chaotic, leading to overwhelming moments. One thing that has assisted me is striving to create positive change in my immediate surroundings. If everyone aimed to improve their own small corner of the world, it could significantly enhance the global landscape. . . . . . #thenews #positivity #matthewperry #jadapinkettsmith #love #reel

Despite the United States' repeated "sanction" warnings, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said hopes that the hurdles in the execution of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project will be removed and it will be completed. Asif, in conversation with Geo News, urged regional stakeholders to unite on a common platform for the protection of their interests following the turmoil and unrest across countries in the region and the heightened intervention of powerful European and Western nations through their proxies in the context of Israel. In this regard, the minister also termed the Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi's "successful" Pakistan visit a "great development". The Iranian president's visit was a landmark moment, especially with regard to the pipeline project, which has remained stalled in the wake of geopolitical issues and international sanctions. The minister's statement comes at a significant time when the United States has, on multiple occasions over this week, hinted towards the "potential risk of sanctions" in light of the business deals — particularly the execution of the gas pipeline project — between Iran and Pakistan following President Raisi's crucial visit. #TheNews
