Shaker Spool Rack, Canterbury, New Hampshire, circa 1850. Attributed to James Johnson, brother of Elder Joseph Johnson of the Church Family. Wooden spindles painted yellow with a beautifully turned handle bearing a pair of scribe lines at the center. Spools of various hardwoods, including tiger maple, many painted red or yellow. Several other spool racks known are attributable to James Johnson, including at least three of which are oval designed to fit inside an oval box. Other examples of Johnson's spool racks are found in the collections of Shaker Museum Mount Lebanon and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. . . . #Shakers #shakerspools #Canterbury #theshakers #sewingitems #canterburyshakers #americamantiques #shakerdesign #shakersmalls

Bee swarm box used at the North Family, Mount Lebanon, NY. Object ID: 1950.2727.1 The Shakers were at the forefront of beekeeping. Early on they understood the importance of the role bees played in pollinating their crops and, of course, enjoyed the honey and made use of beeswax. The swarm box was used by beekeepers to transport wild swarms of bees to their manufactured hives. Made of pine and basswood with an oak handle, is interior is covered with a finely woven linen to provide ventilation during transport. Once back at the hives the bees were transferred into a prepared hive. The two holes in the box apparently let the bees come and go until they decide to move into the new hive. #beekeeping #shakerbeekeeping #historyofbeekeeping #19thcenturybeekeeping #shakeringenuity #mountlebanon #theshakers #shakermuseum #swarmbox #bees

Small chest of drawers covered with floral figure oilcloth, Canterbury, NH. Object ID: 1956.8092.1 This chest of drawers is small--its dimensions and proportions are those of a piece of doll furniture, but apparently it was not used for that purpose. It features a hinged top, a lock and key, brass escutcheon with lock and key, four small drawers and one long drawer, all with round multicolored glass bead pulls. It's made of wood covered in blue paper and overlaid with brown printed oilcloth. The drawers are lined in pink paper. Make sure to check out the pretty details in the second image! Leather-covered winnowing basket, Watervliet, NY, ca. 1820-40. Object ID: 1956.8192.1 Before the invention of the fanning mill, separating grain from the chaff was a tedious job. It was made somewhat easier by the use of a winnowing basket. Harvested grain was dried and placed on a large floor, where it was beaten with flails to separate the grain heads from the stalks and the outer husks (the chaff) from the kernel of grain. The stalks were raked off the floor, and the remaining grain was placed in a winnowing basket and thrown up in the air, where a modest wind would blow away the chaff, leaving, after a number of throws in the air, only the kernels in the basket. #watervlietshakers #winnowing #winnowingbasket #antiquefarmtools #shakertools #separatinggrainfromchaff #antiquebaskets #shakerbaskets #basketry #theshakers #19thcenturyantiques #americanantiques #shakerantiques #shakeringenuity #newyorkmuseums #shakermuseum

Seed Bag Chisel, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY, ca. 1830. Object ID: 1950.1642.1 Between 1834 and 1840 alone, nearly one million seed bags were cut, printed, and filled with seed at Mount Lebanon. Up until after the Civil War, the raising and selling of garden seeds was very profitable for a number of Shaker communities. Some of the success of the business should be credited to small inventions such as this seed bag chisel. The Shakers figured out that it was quicker to cut a number of pieces of paper to a given shape with the whack of a chisel than to try and cut them out individually with knife or scissors. This cabbage seed bag (image 2, Object ID: 1957.9348.1) is an example of the finished product. #ShakerSeeds #ShakerIndustries #19thcenturygardening #historyofgardening #theshakers #shakeringenuity #mountlebanon #HudsonValley #vernaculargraphicdesign

Happy May Day (aka International Workers Day)! Don't forget, we'll be doing the quarterly #ShakerShow on @wgxc_90.7fm today from 4-5pm at their new location in downtown Catskill. We'll be discussing labor as well as the Shaker seed industry. Mount Lebanon North Family Shaker Elder Frederick W. Evans Evans was an influential elder among the Shakers in the latter half of the 19th century. He was also a prolific writer who published several works on a wide variety of topics, including spiritualism, sanitation, diet, clothing, land ownership, farming practices, temperance, pacifism, equality for women, and the separation of church and state. In addition to writing and speaking, he also devoted considerable time and effort to the gardens, orchards and farm of the North Family. This piece, "Wail of a Striker," is from a chapbook he published. In it, he reflects on the labor movement. An excerpt: "Striking! What can we do but strike? To our surprise, we then learn that a thousand of our un-employed fellow-laborers, with families in a state of semi-starvation, stand ready to gladly take our places. Boycotting, What can be done next but boycott them? This divides the house, setting laborers against laborers. When the police interfere, is it in human nature not to repel force with force? We dynamite them. This brings down upon us the military power of the U. S. government, and then the judiciary, who are even now trying some of our number for conspiracy and murder. Are we not in a bottomless pit? For those of us who are not to be hung, what is our permanent remedy?" #ShakerSeeds #ShakerIndustries #19thcenturygardening #historyofgardening #theshakers #shakeringenuity #mountlebanon #HudsonValley #HudsonValleyRadio #WGXC #theshakers #thereispowerinaunion #MayDay #internationalworkersday

Weft yarn winder, Church Family, Canterbury, NH. Object ID: 1961.12965.1 This exquisite machine was used to wind weft yarn onto a quill, bobbin, or spool. Quills (thin tubes of paper made of wood, metal, or the horny part of a feather) filled with yarn were placed in a weaver's shuttle. As the shuttle was thrown back and forth through the warp, the quill would unwind its yarn as it became part of the finished cloth. A number of full quills were needed to insure that the weaver's work was not interrupted. Winding quills was work generally assigned to young Shaker girls. The brass wheels and leather belts on the maple quill winder are positioned in such a way that when the handle is turned a single revolution the spindle on which the quill is wound rotates numerous times, greatly accelerating the speed with which the quill was ready for the weaver's shuttle. #canterburynh #canterburyshakers #shakeringenuity #shakertools #shakerfabrics #shakerweavings #antiqueweaving #quillwinding #weaving #warpandweft #yarnwinder #antiquetools #shakerdesign #19thcenturyweaving #shakermuseum #newyorkmuseum #utopiansocieties #theshakers

Red-painted cupboard over chest of drawers, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY. Object ID: 1950.596.1 This beautiful red-painted cupboard over chest of drawers has mortised and tenoned and double pinned doors with iron butt hinges above 12 dovetailed drawers in two banks. The drawer pulls aren't original to the cupboard; they're commercially made and were swapped in sometime after the terrible Church Family fire of February 6, 1875. While rebuilding their homes and the furnishings therein, the Shakers commissioned some pieces from outside carpenters. It was likely these carpenters who "updated" this cupboard (which was likely surplus from another Family) with more decorative knobs when the new buildings were built. #19thcenturyantiques #AmericanAntiques #oldredpaint #mountlebanon #shakeringenuity #FineWoodworking #WoodLove #ShakerMuseum #TheShakers #ShakerStyle #ShakerDesign #newyorkmuseums #shakermuseum #antiquecupboards #ShakerFurniture

Woven wool square, Canterbury, NH. Object ID: 1952.4858.1 A fun little mystery: Although this cloth was tentatively identified as a handkerchief, this seems unlikely given the size (13x11 in.), composition, and fringed edges. If you look closely, you can read the cross-stitched inscription: "wove Yr 1810" at the top right and "B" at the bottom left. Given the inscription, this may be the first piece of cloth woven by a young Shaker sister, or perhaps the inscription was added later and the piece had some other significance. #shakerfabrics #shakerknits #antiquewovenfabric #shakermuseum #canterburynh #TheShakers #MysteryMonday #ShakerStyle #wovenwool #checkerpatterns #ginghamcheck

Sewing carrier with starburst intarsia lid, Mount Lebanon, NY, ca. 1850. Object ID: 1972.17478.1a,b This carrier was built as a lidded oval box at Mount Lebanon. Later, the box was refinished, the top header removed and lowered into the lid band and wanut/cherry intarsia and a steam-bent swing handle added. The inside of the box is lined with blue satin and is fitted with a pincushion and strawberry emery in blue velvet, a poplarware needle case, and a molded piece of bee's wax. The records of this acquisition indicate that the box was believed to have been made by one of the “last of the clockmakers.” It's unknown who originally built the box but believed that the person who modified it might have been Brother Ricardo Belden, who worked on clocks at Mount Lebanon and Hancock. #woodinlay #intarsia #sewingcarrier #shakerovalboxes #sewingkit #shakersewingkits #finewoodworking #woodlove #bluevelvet #bluesatin #poplarware #mountlebanon #hancockma #theshakers #shakerdesign #shakeringenuity

Steam engine built by Elder Granville Merrill, Sabbathday Lake, ME, ca. 1867-78. Object ID: 1957.10389.1 A #ShakerMuseumDeepDive into Elder Granville Merrill's steam engine: Selling poplarware to the world was an important source of income for the Maine Shakers. To assure a steady supply of raw material for poplarware, the Shaker craftsmen developed steam-driven splitting machinery. This steam engine powered a machine that split poplar for wood used for making bonnets, baskets, and other fancy goods made by the sisters at Sabbathday Lake. Merill was a mechanic who joined the Sabbathday Lake Shakers when he was 29. He involved himself in the sale of poplarware in ways beyond building this steam engine: he travelled to resort hotels at Bar Harbor and Orchard Beach to sell fancy goods made by the sisters. Speaking of poplarware: Stop by #PalmtoPoplar at the Kinderhook Knitting Mill this Fri-Sat-Sun! @cmacbride's paintings of Shaker material objects (alongside objects from our collection) are only on exhibit for 3 more weekends. Mortise gauge made by Brother David Rowley, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY. Object ID: 1950.1170.1 This ergonomic carved beech* hand tool is a gauge made to mark out the position of joints used the connect the muntins (or mullions) and stiles of wooden window sash. Because Shaker buildings have a lot of windows (necessitating hundreds of joints), it must have inspired the design of this special tool for the job. Simple gifts simple pleasures. Finally getting around to posting last semesters work. Founded in 1747, the Shakers were a sect of Christianity that dedicated themselves to celibacy, equality, unity, and finely crafted creations. Skilled in woodworking and other trades, they lived communally, developing a distinct design language centered around craftsmanship sustainability, and purity. Meeting House blends history with contemporary design by curating products and educational resources that pay homage to the craftsmanship, sustainability, and purity that define the Shaker legacy. In order to create a visual identity that speaks to the Shaker tradition, Meeting House Blends traditional forms of craft with contemporary expression and best practices #parsonsschoolofdesign #thenewschool #theshakers #editorialdesign #branddesign #typography #visualidentity #graphicdesign #communicationdesign

Sieve used to sift mattress stuffing, Canterbury, NH. Object ID: 1950.4166.1 This 40-inch sieve is also known as a riddle. At one time, when corn husks were a common mattress filling, this type of sieve would be used to refresh the filling, and that process was called "riddling." Shakers did this process once a year, generally in April. Read more about this riddle in our April Newsletter! Limestone sundial used at South Union, KY. Object ID: 1952.4763.1 Even after clocks and watches were generally available, Shaker communities continued to use sundials. Once set with its shadow-casting gnomon parallel to the rotational axis of the earth, and adjusted to correct for longitude and daily variations in solar time, a sundial could be used to accurately set clocks. The origin of this sundial, which bears the date July 1876, is uncertain. While a photograph from 1918 shows it in the yard of the meetinghouse at the South Union (KY) community, it is likely that this sundial had been moved from another place to be used or displayed in the new location. After the South Union property was sold, the sundial was brought to the Canterbury, NH, community. Unfortunately, the calibrations set for the KY location made it unusable in NH. #shakeringenuity #southunionky #canterburynh #sundials #antiquesundials #timekeeping #thesun #solareclipse2024 #theshakers #shakermuseum #carvedliimestone #newyorkmuseums #gnomon

Garden seed box/shipping container bearing label on front, Mount Lebanon, NY. Object ID: 1952.5017.1 Although you might think of Shaker chairs when you think of Shaker industries, Shaker seeds were one of their most successful and vanguard enterprises. In the early 19th century, the high-quality, home-grown Shaker seeds produced by the Watervliet and New Lebanon communities were one of the preeminent sources of seeds. According to researcher Angela Goodson, Mount Lebanon produced 37,242 pounds of seeds at a value of $33,901 over a 25-year period. Shakers pioneered gardening practices that are still in use today, such as seed envelopes and gardening how-to books. #ShakerSeeds #shakeringenuity #seeds #seedlings #gardening #vernaculargraphicdesign #19thcenturygraphicdesign #gardeninghistorylesson #MountLebanon #WatervlietShakers #newyorkhistory #shakermuseum #theshakers #shakerhistory #americanhistory #shakerdesign

Shag rug made by Sister Jennie Wells, Hancock, MA. Object ID: 1953.6115.1 The Shakers wove shag rugs beginning in the late 19th century. This rug was woven by Jennie Wells (1878-1956) in the 1940s. Shag rugs are made by pulling and knotting strips of linen into a crochet or knit backing. (The rags used in this rug were machine-woven and printed with synthetic dyes in non-Shaker factories. By the turn of the 20th century, the Shakers were buying virtually all of their textiles for clothing and other articles from the World.) #HancockMA #ShakerRugs #RagRugs #1940srugs #ShakerMuseum #TheShakers #ShakerDesign #ShakerStyle #Shakers #newyorkmuseums #recylcledfabric #tisthegifttobesimple

Bury FC V Wythensawe Gigg Lane The Shakers 1-1Ammies Lads day with @chris7thompson and Jack ,out to Bury today for 2nd v 3rd Spot, ages since I've been Gigg lane. The pitch was a right mess and just about playable, pretty flat first half with not much action. But the 2nd half stepped up with a goal to Bury then in the 92nd minute Bury missed a sitter it went to the other end and Wythensawe got a pen to draw the game , #football #nonleague #bury #buryfc #theshakers #thebeaitifulgame #gigglane #lads #ladsdayout #brothers #bestmates #groundhopping
