To help the bees during the summer months there are fewer flowers and other food sources for the bees. Water is also scarce and so many bees drown as they try to drink from the pools. Grate an apple and add some water to a bowl. The bees will be able to get the sugars from the fruit and drink the water and not drown as they can stand on the pieces of fruit. Saturday Fact Day! For centuries, beekeepers across Europe have kept up an incredibly ancient tradition in beekeeping called โtelling the beesโ. This is where the beekeeper treats the bees as an extended part of the family. Telling them all about the news thatโs happening within the household, so for example births, marriages and deaths. Death is marked by decorating the hive with black as this the usual symbol of mourning. After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Beekeeper, John Chapple, informed the bees of Buckingham Palace and Clarence House of her passing and the ascension of King Charles III. Chapple described the practice to the press as โYou knock on each hive and say, โThe mistress is dead, donโt you go. Your master will be a good master to youโ. On the death of a beekeeper, itโs required that the new beekeeper introduce themselves formally as their new owner and ask for their acceptance. I talk to my bees about all sorts, what has happened since my last seeing them, what my plans are. I love that they are part of my little world and in my thoughts.
