A seminar was organised at the Hatfield Community Centre, Dagenham as part of a community educational initiative to help with preparations for local pilgrims who are performing the Hajj this year. The pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia is one of the pillars of Islam and the most important journey a Muslim will make during their lifetime. Three charitable organisations, Small Deeds, House of Giving and Lonely Orphans @lonelyorphans partnered to deliver the training programme for members of the local community. After introductions were made by Abu Nasir the interactive workshop was delivered by Shaikh Md Imran from Lonely Orphans. The Hajj is considered one of the largest human gatherings on earth with millions of Muslims from all around the world gathering to fulfill this mandatory religious duty. Last year more than 2.5 million Muslims from all over the world congregated in the city of Makkah for the Hajj - estimated to be the largest one ever. After a segment on the history of the Muslim pilgrimage, the workshop focussed on the three types of Hajj and then the rituals and practises for the five Hajj days. Hajj takes place during the same period each year – during the month of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month in the Islamic Calendar. The pilgrimage is a test of patience and temperament – a spiritual, emotional, and physical challenge, and an opportunity to refresh the spiritual self. The Hajj is a mandatory religious duty and it is compulsory upon every sane and able person who has the financial means to undertake the journey. The session ended with a Q&A segment with Zahin Ahmed from One Hajj & Umrah Group who talked participants through the Nusuk Hajj platform. This is the first ever official planning, booking and experience platform, to help pilgrims create their Hajj itinerary, organising the entire visit, from applying for an eVisa to booking hotels and flights. Wizz Air Hackney Half confirmed for 19th May and I am proud to be the face of the Docklands Community Initiative. For this run my fellow volunteers will actually be supporting me on the route. The only time I’ve actually had someone coming along was when one of my students was my cheerleader and backup team for my first London Marathon almost twenty years ago. The cheering on by strangers on the run routes have always been massive in getting me over the line but the backing of my dedicated squad on the day will be altogether new levels for me. The Barking and Dagenham Best Chance Strategy lists the Borough amongst the most deprived. Child poverty is amongst the highest in the country and life expectancy levels are at the depths. A clean up brings us together and today my nephew and niece learnt a life lesson as they enjoyed positive interaction with eight people who would otherwise be considered strangers. Playing a part in maintaining a communal area makes us proud of our neighbourhood and helps build valuable relationships. There are many social causes for homelessness. Life events like a relationship breaking down, losing a job, mental or physical health problems, or substance misuse put people under considerable strain There are people who have left prison and have nowhere to turn. It is not surprising that sleeping on the streets, in hostels, in squats or in substandard or overcrowded accommodation can have a damaging effect on someone’s physical wellbeing. In addition to the impact of bad conditions, recent research by Crisis found that homeless people are 17 times more likely to be a victim of violence, much of it perpetrated by the general public. We are tenacious and results focussed - Obstacles merely slow us down but strengthen our resolution to serve our communities. We are very diverse in many different ways but our focus and commitment is always one. We thrive on good energy and insist on working with positive people to bounce ideas and creativity off. The DCI volunteers run a foodbank which serves some of the most vulnerable people you could hope to meet. Poverty and hardship is rife here despite the locals living under the shadow of Canary Wharf. Based on the cricket for all concept we are contributing towards making sports accessible to the community through our new home schoolers programme. I failed to persuade my local sports group to take it on and buy into the vision, so just went and launched it independently - After all why let a great thing wait? I was confident that people from my network would pitch in with ideas and equipment and that has been exactly the case. I’m really passionate about seeing this initiative succeed and hopefully being the catalyst for similar, bigger and better projects like to flourish. Refraining from food and drink is only one part of Ramadan and there is great onus on introducing and implementing practices and habits which improve self development. Part of the ethos at Little Litter League is to use practical examples to educate and raise awareness of the deadly impact littering has on our lives as well as our wildlife too. Apart from reducing litter we need a complete transformation of our sense of belonging and relationships with a neighbourhood with is a central piece in our sense of identity and community.
