Half Marathon #2 of 2024: Real Simple Women's Half I used this race to help me gauge where I'm at for the #rbcbrooklynhalf in 3 weeks, and I have to say, I'm feeling good about it. I definitely need to work on fueling and hydrating during my runs. It’s been a minute since I actually posted but on this, my 8 year anniversary of running, I couldn’t not post! I wish I could say that I ran 8 miles in celebration but that’s just NOT where my fitness is currently. 🤪 Instead, I followed my Garmins suggested workout and ended up with a total of 4 miles. That works! 😁 I can’t believe I’ve been able to call myself a runner for 8 years! 🫢 As someone who grew up playing sports where running was punishment and I STRUGGLED 🤢, never in a million years did I think I would fall in love with it and that I would plan family vacations around races and meet up with random strangers from the internet to run with! It is SO wild that because of @toneitup and their old workouts that suggested 20 minutes of cardio along with the strength, I became a runner! And not just any runner, a marathoner x 3, and Dopey Challenge finisher x 2! It is because of running that I now know, I truly can do hard freaking things! I ran faster for longer than I ever have before but all of that ended when I hit a wall (if you look at my splits, you can guess where). It's been a week. My son had the flu. My daughter had a birthday. I chaporened a 3rd grade field trip to the zoo. And I did all of that feeling like complete crap from a severe sinus infection that affected my ear. And now on meds, I was at the field all day for a softball and baseball tournament. I felt a bit better today, so I went back over to Teddy Roosevelt Island for a few miles. Separately, I've decided to run the BAA 10K instead of Grandma's Half - it's a hard call because I love Grandma's. @thefellsman 2024 I had an amazing day out with amazing views all day but it was unfortunately another DNF. I made it to Redshaw which is just over half way at 52.5km and my quads were absolutely shot to bits having already done 2585 metres of elevation. It was also really cold with a windchill of -5 and I just wasn’t moving fast enough to keep warm. Ultimately I just wasn’t fit enough to do such a tough course. I’m pleased that I lined up on that start line and that I’ve now recced the first half and know how tough it is and I know what I need to do to complete it next time. I’ve decided to cancel my races for the next couple of months and follow a proper training plan for a marathon I’m doing in Sherwood pines in July I’ve got about 12 weeks to train for it and be more consistent with my running and sort my head out so that I start eating better to lose some weight as it’s making running really hard. New Brooks Ghost have arrived. I am diligent about new shoes every 300-400 miles and when you run 50+ miles a week that is a ALOT of shoes in a year. I snag pairs from EBay from time to time to reduce cost. These are Ghost 14 rather than Ghost 15 and I can get the previous version cheaper to save a few bucks. Mississauga Beneva Marathon Finished the marathon, but not in my intended goal time as I was aiming for 3:10. I held 4:30/km pace up until 30K and the heat slowly got to me at the end and I got dehydrated as the weather warmed up. The water stations were to far apart at 5K. I got thirsty quickly despite grabbing every opportunity for hydration. I went into a mild shock and bp dropped to 98/60 at 41K. Thankful for the prompt response of the medical team that came to my assistance and the local neighbours. They applied an ice pack to bring my core temperature down and gave me water and towels. Even EMS arrived with fire truck and ambulance. My condition was stabilized as I sat by the curb for 30min and my legs began to cramp up too. Thank-you to my friends for staying by my side at the finish area medical tent. Visited the Mississauga Marathon Expo to pick up my race kit. The event is very small without the excitement of a World Major Marathon event. I was in and out within 15min. I took advantage of the spring blossoms at nearby Kariya Park. There was a magnolia tree and one cherry blossom. Afterwards, I started my carb loading diet at Pho Ngoc Yen and had a large bowl of spaghetti bolognese for dinner. Will rest up early tonight for the early morning race start.
