• Weekend • How are you? Have you had a nice weekend? It’s been beautiful weather in Cornwall recently, freezing but so sunny and crisp. Fern (our spaniel pup) has been a little poorly over the weekend so we’ve had a trip to the vet. She’s had a concoction of drugs for a possible infection and seems to be a lot better today. It was a worry seeing her obviously in pain, if only they could speak! However, she’s been carrying around ‘ducky’ and her usual waggy tail has resumed service. Not only because I loved Hed P.E. for a long time, but because my favorite band at the time This Still Life opened the show. A band for which I also happened to be the singer. 😂 This was actually our very first show. We got added pretty late (thank you forever Nicci) but we got to work and put a short set together and played a great show. And then I got to watch Hed P.E. show us how it's done. It’s me again (@kristinadianephotography)! . . Today I’m going to delve into what began my creative journey into self-portraiture. Although I have experimented with it off and on for ten+ years, this image begins the true tale and depth of it. Two years ago I sank into an episode of chronic depression, but in addition, I was realizing (and ignoring) red flags of the abusive relationship that I referenced in my previous self-portrait. What I thought was love, quickly turned into intimidation, the silent treatment, gaslighting, and emotional and verbal abuse. The thing is, I didn’t know these things were happening until only a few days before I ended the relationship. . . This photo was taken at the height of depression, and with the boyfriend in the next room playing video games. I felt so lost. The most important person in my life was so close physically, yet the furthest he could possibly be from me. I learned that I could no longer talk to him about my struggles without some kind of reprimand for simply having feelings and needs in our relationship. . . Self-portrait photography was my only outlet. I wasn’t able to talk to anyone about how truly bad things were, because I was embarrassed; embarrassed by letting people know that I was allowing him to treat me this way, and because I felt the need to hide his bad behavior, for some sick reason. But when I picked up the camera, everything else faded away and I was able to focus solely on myself. Many shots were in the midst of tears. Some people journal; I was snapping photos in an effort to release emotion that I was taught by him to hide. Ladies and gentlemen, this is narcissistic abuse. . . Looking back, I’ve seen a pattern in my photography up until I left. Unbeknownst to me, many images were of me hiding my face, in some way. Since I left, my face has reappeared and I’m holding it high. . . Self-portraiture remains a part of my life today and I continue to find ways to express my emotion and creativity.
