This post is in memory of Inchy’s namesake: Conor O’Brien, Lord Inchiquin, born in July 1943 and sadly died in June 2023. A lot of people ask me where Inchy’s name came from. He was named after Lord Inchiquin who was a family relative and was visiting our house at the time that Inchy was born and rescued. It seemed a little sycophantic at the time and a very grand name to give to a little baby deer who was so tiny he could squeeze through the bars of a child’s playpen. I remember insisting that the name be shortened to ‘Inchy’ while he was a baby. However, as Inchy grew up and I learnt more about the inspirational person behind his name choice, I realised that Inchy couldn’t have been named after a nicer, more extraordinary man. Conor had several deeply historic Irish titles. He was the 18th Baron Inchiquin, Prince of Thomond and the 10th baronet of Lemeneagh. He was also chief of the O’Brien clan (estimated at 750,000 people worldwide). The history of his titles is fascinating (the Inchiquin title was granted to his ancestor when King Henry VIII was named King of Ireland and insisted all Irish nobility surrender their native titles in exchange for titles granted from the English crown). This seems a little odd when you learn that Conor (and his ancestor at the time) was the direct descendant of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland in the 11th century. So one King had to surrender the title to another. Quite apart from the amazing history of the name, Conor was a kind and humble man who played a great part in uniting his community, the O’Briens across the world and he wrote me a lovely letter when I once sent him a photo album of Inchy to peruse while in hospital. He clearly deserved to have a deer named after him and now we can only hope that Inchy continues to live up to the great name. All the buses coming at once this month. It is a veritable tailback. Almost decided to forego a ticket for this because I didn’t think I’d be in a fit state or, as usual, would likely have contracted cholera or something from planes and metros. But it was to be in Coughlan’s, which was reason enough and, true to form, it ended up being the best Villagers gig I’ve attended. The sound was crystal clear, you could hear every lyric, and the audience was rapt. I’d a lovely seat-mate. We spent a lot of time beforehand eulogising Coughlan’s, to the extent I thought she was a local, but she was a local from Kilworth. Well, that will happen. It’s just the nicest venue going. I was absolutely gutted when The Lobby closed its doors. I had so many memories of magical performances there, music hanging in the air before attentive audiences as the windows steamed up on winter nights and car lights mesmerised on the bridge below. I even liked that tickets for sale were stored in a beer glass behind the counter. Then Coughlan’s came along, expressly determined to fill the gap left - and did. Lord, do I ever appreciate that.
